Agritourism A type of tourism that allows visitors to experience agricultural
or life first-hand; see page 15 for some farm destinations near you!
Agro-
tourism
CSA Abbreviation stands for Community Supported Agriculture; a
type of business organization where customers buy “shares” of the
farm’s garden. Typically, the share consists of a certain amount
of fresh produce throughout the season. Contact your local CSA
to find out more about what they offer their Share Members.
Farmers’ A group of farmers who get together on a set schedule to sell
Market their products all at one location; see page 14 for a listing on your
local Farmers’ Markets.
Locavore Someone who eats food that is produced locally or within a cer-
tain radius (50, 100, or 150 miles). The locavore movement en-
courages consumers to buy local foods with the argument that
local products are more nutritious and taste better. Locally grown
food is an environmentally friendly means of obtaining food,
since supermarkets that import their food use more fossil fuels
and non-renewable resources.
All Natural Legally, a food can be labeled “natural” if it does not contain
artificial ingredients, coloring ingredients, hormones, or chemical
preservatives and is minimally processed. Many producers use
the term “all natural” to describe the philosophy behind their
production.
Organic Only farms that go through the certification process can label
Local Foods Dictionary
their food organic. The process is expensive, and many small
farms choose to forgo certification even though their own prac-
tices meet or exceed those required. Organic standards vary, but
generally include: Prohibition on synthetic chemicals, irradia-
tion, or genetically modified organisms, farmland that has been
free of the above for three years, detailed records of practices
used, and periodic on-site inspections.
Sustainable Most define sustainable as three-pronged: environmental stew-
Agriculture ardship, farm profitability, and prosperous farming communities.
Sustainable farming practices is a growing trend.
U-Pick This term refers to an added feature some farms incorporate
where families can come pick their own fruits or vegetables.
