With the present statement I would like to make myself known a little bit better to
you. My name is Maria Kambouri and I was born in Nicosia in 1985.
Early age
From a very early age I found myself seeking knowledge, and therefore education was
always very high on my list of priorities. Throughout my primary and secondary
education, I received exceptionally high marks. Some of the subjects that I enjoyed
most ware:
- Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) because they helped me understand the
world and myself as they satisfied my curiosity as to how nature functions.
-Mathematics, because it helped me develop an analytical and abstract way of
thinking and in that way sharpened my perception of the world.
- English, because it helped me formulate my communication skills, which enabled
me to express myself through the oral and written word more effectively.
- Computer Science, as I believe it to be the means by which we will carry ourselves
into the future and also because with computer science and internet we can discover
and communicate with the world around us.
Involvement in extra-curricular activities
As I believe that education can be achieved not only through books, I became
involved in school matters and extra-curricular activities. I was an active member and
secretary of the class committee and also member of the Unicef club for several years.
I took part in school productions for celebrations of national anniversaries. I also took
part in productions organized by the school, like theatre, dance and gymnastic
competitions. Those were not only memorable and enjoyable experiences, but also
they helped me improve my cultural abilities.
Undergraduate Studies
Upon my graduation from high school, I decided to continue my education further as I
believed that a Bachelor’s Degree in the area of Education, would bring me one step
closer to achieving my long term goals. A university education would provide me
with advanced knowledge in the area of my interest. Furthermore, it would assist the
development of my character, enabling me to become more open minded and
receptive to new ideas, suitable qualities for an individual who plans to be a leader in
the small but dynamic community of Cyprus.
Graduate Studies
Approaching my university graduation, I was faced with the dilemma of seeking
employment or continuing my education further. I decided on the latter, as I believed
that it would help me deeper my knowledge in the field of education in order to
achieve my long-term goals. The university experience, along with the Erasmus
experience and my participation in several events, like theatre as a theatre directory,
strengthened my educational skills and provided me with advanced knowledge in the
area of my interest.
I completed a degree in the area of Education at the University of Cyprus, in June of
2007. The reasons I mentioned above were still important to me, and this is why I
chose to follow up my education even further by applying for a Master’s degree in
Education. At the moment, I am studying for my master’s degree in Educational
Research at Warwick’s University. I am completing my master’s degree in September
2008. One of the reasons that I chose this specific master degree was because I
wanted to prepare myself for a doctorate.
Upon completion of the degree
Upon completion of my degree, I plan to continue my studies aiming for a doctorate
degree in the field of education before I seek employment in the education industry.
Work Experience
I have worked as a private tutor for one year and as a kindergarten teacher for one
semester. This experience has helped me gain valuable experience in my chosen field
of study, which has allowed me to be certain of my choice for my degree and has
motivated me to continue and deeper my studies in this field.
Personal Comment
I firmly believe that I have a lot to offer to your institution. I am a self-motivated
individual, a high achiever, and will positively motivate those around me into trying
their best as well. I am disciplined, and I find college life exciting. I have always
been characterized by those around me as easy to communicate with. At the same
time, my goals and my choice of your University are very clear in my mind. I am
confident that I can meet the challenge, excel academically, and live up to the
expectations and the reputation that your institution has set for its members.
Praise of the country’s education system and the university’s quality
I am choosing to attend your University because my research has shown me that it
combines an excellent program of study in the area of my interest with an exciting
college life. Furthermore, the quality of British education is known and respected
around the globe. I firmly believe that my studies in England will offer me a world-
class education, will broaden my understanding of the world and will expose me to a
world of cultures and ideas still unknown to me.
