									Bone Fractures

     Ow!
  4 common types of fractures
1. Greenstick- cracked or partially cracked.
   Bone never completely separates.
   Common in children
2. Closed/simple. Broken ends do not
   pierce skin
3. Open/compound. Broken bones protrude
   through skin.
4. Comminuted. Bone is splintered, may
   become embedded in surrounding tissue
       Fix it!- 3 main methods
• Closed reduction: Boney fragments are brought
into alignment by manipulation, and a cast or
  splint is applied.
• Open reduction: Through surgical intervention,
devices such as screws, wires, metal plates are
used to hold bones in alignment. Cast or splint
  may be applied.
• Traction: Pulling force used to hold bones in
  place- used for long bones
• Occur in children
  whose bones are still
  growing
• Twice as common in
  boys as girls
• May require surgery
