“Yes We Can” Unlock the Genius of the
African American Student!
Greetings Educator/Youth Advocate,
In response to continuing requests from around the country since being featured on the Oprah Winfrey
Show and Fox News, the Village Nation is excited to announce it’s annual summer institute for
secondary teams. African American students can learn at high standards and your school or
community organization can make the difference! This intensive four-day residential institute will
help teams develop their capacity to significantly impact learning and achievement for African American
students. Data confirms that African American youth in urban public secondary schools that have adopted
the Village Nation’s model are making extraordinary gains on standardized tests and are taking
charge of their education and their future. They also are taking care of one another, their families
and community. We’re extending an invitation for a team from your school or community to learn how
your students can attain the same results. You can expect to see major improvement in the first year.

Soaring test scores. Your school can do this, too!
Note: Data reflects a variety of settings, including comprehensive, charter, urban and suburban.
Powerful stories behind the data...
From Teachers:
Last year, I would describe some of the Black students as “too cool for school.” This year I have already seen a big difference in the
confidence, attitude, and achievement of the Black students at our school. I will keep working to make my classroom a safer, better place
for all. Village Nation is working!
In my mind I knew I had the power, but I kept getting frustrated and wanting to blame the kids and community. Now I know to treat
African American students with more care and encouragement, while holding higher expectations for their academic capabilities.
Whatever the trial has been, is currently or will be.... no one can say that what has been accomplished by The Village Nation is nothing
short of amazing, unprecedented and the RIGHT thing to do.
I am more aware of some of the challenges Black students have when they experience the school environment as hostile toward them. I
was pretty ignorant before because my own children were fortunate enough not to have those challenges.
My role is to stick my neck out for my kids I need to be an advocate for students as they navigate the school environment and to change
that environment so they know that they are valued.
It was great to work as a team away from school—to focus, share and plan, and to have The Village Nation’s facilitation and guidance.
From a Principal:
Following the impressive presentation by The Village Nation, I began to reflect on the realities at our school. I asked myself, “Am I
contributing to a ‘hostile environment’ by not taking action?”
From Students:
I understand that I pave my own path. Also, my ancestors are watching me. I loved this assembly!
The assembly gave me hope to do better in school. I now believe that Blacks can be successful in whatever we want to become in life.
