Book: Ox Cart Man by Donald Hall
Book Introduction: Our book today is a work of fiction, but we will learn how people in the 1800’s could
have made a living. Our story begins in October when the father is packing up the wagon to go to town. The
writer will tell us how the family has worked all through the year to get ready for this trip.

Just like we have studied in social studies these people have been and the ways in which they
producers. Talk about some of the things they have produced. are interdependent.
How might they have gotten their vegetables and their clothing ready
to take to town? (Help students understand they have worked all 1-1.2 Use pictures and words

Yesterday as we read I noticed that the writer repeated a lot of things. 1-1.6 Explain how the
elements of author’s craft
For example – on the page where he is packing (Page “He packed a (for example, word choice)
bag of wool…”) He started each sentence with “He packed…” affect the meaning of a given
literary text.
He did it on the next page too. Even the page after that. When we
read those pages we will all say “He Packed” and keep listening for
things the author repeated as we read.
(“He sold…” and “Then he sold…” uses the same phrases for the
journey to town as he did on his journey home.)
