Miss Susan Torres

Vice Principal of Supervision

14325 Goldenwest Avenue

Westminster, CA 92683

Dear Miss Torres:

I am a student at Westminster High School, and I really enjoy the school.

The teachers and the campus are both very enjoyable. During the first

semester I encountered many problems getting to class on time and

received many unexcused absences due to tardy sweeps.

When students are late for class, the administration sometimes

spontaneously conducts tardy sweeps. Students are picked up by

supervision and required to spend the class period in a mandatory in house

detention. Sometimes the tardy sweeps occur during a class period in

which a test is occurring. Many teachers do not accept late work and this

ultimately causes problems with student grades.

I have tried getting to class on time but, sometimes, the flow of student

traffic is too heavy for me to get to class on time. Often times I have to use

the restroom and the line is so long during lunch that I cannot go. I then try

to go after lunch and this causes me to be late. I have also tried to get a

supervision attendant to escort me to my class instead of taking me to

mandatory detention. Even though I am tardy to class, I would much rather

be in class doing my work then be in detention.

I do have a proposed solution. I think teachers should be required to lock

their classroom doors once the tardy bell rings. Supervision should then

gather up the tardy students and take them to the attendance office where

they are marked tardy for that class period. Students are then to be

released to class with a tardy slip from the attendance office. This would

allow students to receive consequences for their tardiness while also

keeping them from falling behind in their classes.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I hope that you will consider

my position and solution. If you have any questions or would like to discuss

this further, please contact me at (714) 321-4271 or mjagger@hotmail.com.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Mick Jagger
