SILLY THEORIES !
There is a well known idiom - "You cannot teach an old dog new tricks".
Well, I have disproved that silly theory !!
Twenty years ago in spite of my stiff and unrelenting resistance, HeeHoo
eventually managed to introduce me to mobile phones and I soon became
fairly au fait with my old "brick nokkia",
So confident was I with my symbian life that when he talked of upgrading
me to an iPhone, I went into what could have been construed as a mild
modular panic !!
I had grown fond of my old brick nokkia, for one thing, the keys were
large enough for my fingers, I could even use them by braille during
power cuts, and I liked the size of the point 18 font.
I was quite electronically comfortable in my Thomas Pynchon life -
(Thomas Pynchon is writer of pessimistic novels about life in a
technologically advanced society fyi.)
I had no need to progress any further with my technical "larning", not
that I am a Luddite you understand, I am just happy in my blissfully
technologically challenged ignorance.
It was only when my beautiful niece Danielle, looked askance at my brick,
and my family were busy sending each other messages for free on their
iphones, that I decided to take that "giant leap for mankind" and take up
HeeHoo's kind offer.
I also liked that fact that iphones take amazing photographs.
HeeHoo does not suffer fools easily, and I knew it would be a long road,
definitely a test for our 32 year old marriage, but I gallantly braved
his fond but exasperated abuse at my obtuseness, and soldiered forth into
the wonderful world of the iphone.
Fortunately I had an ally in brother-in-law David, who would gently,
patiently, with long suffering good humour, lead me through the vagaries
of this darling little new fangled gem.
SheHoo Must Sing was tenderly helpful too for about twenty seconds !! She
downloaded all the "Apps" for me and tests me frequently and
unrelentingly.
Slowly, surely, inexorably, I mastered the darn thing although often
falling by the wayside and deliberately "losing" it in my hand bag and
reverting to the brick instead.
Now after two long months of tuition, I have to begrudgingly admit that
the iphone does have some amazing electronic assets, not the least being
the fact that its almost impossible to text whilst driving!!
It was a miraculous journey of cyber discovery into the pixilated world
where other folk have lived for some time now. The word "Apps" found its
way into my vocabulary. I learned to navigate the wonderful worlds of
wifi, twitter and facebook, I ventured into linkeden, shazam and ibooks.
I am now a complete woman, I have Sasol ebirds on my desktop so I can
call up bird sounds when I need them, I can talk and text for free on
Skype and Viber and I can watch my Apple shares climbing daily!
I now have a dictionary constantly at my fingertips, I have the Urban
Dictionary so I can keep up with my nieces and nephews !! "Words up kids"
I can now say with confidence !
I can now "walk with kings and not lose my common touch" as I can speak
"MBAese", "We are aggressively leveraging existing assets to affect a
paradigm shift interdepartmental synergy." Humpff take that !!
I am no longer on the peripheral of my technologically advanced family ..
I am now gloriously and undoubtedly ONE OF THEM.

Get active . . .
Urgent appeal for the Buffalo herd on Antelope Island and animals on
Starvation Island
We have an urgent requirement to get some hay and possibly stock feed or
anything else that could be used as food or food supplement for wildlife
in the Kariba area. There is currently a small herd of buffalo, including
a calf stranded on Antelope Island in Kariba with virtually no grazing
left. There is a longer-term plan to re-locate them off the island and
back to the main land (a dart gun has already been donated to this end),
but the immediate need is to get food up there to keep them alive. There
is also dire a need at Starvation Island, which sadly is aptly named
right now, where there are a large number of animals stranded with
virtually no food.
Currently we have received very generous donations of nearly 300 bales of
hay, and some stock feeds in Harare and need to get this up to Kariba in
a hurry. This is roughly 15 days worth but time is of the essence right
now. We're appealing to try and get more hay or suitable foodstuff
together to make the trips up there more economical. Taking this a step
further we're also appealing for assistance with diesel and/or transport
in getting it all up there.
Please can you assist in any of the following areas:
- Hay or similar
- Stockfeeds
- Diesel
- Space on a 30 tonne rig if we can manage to get more feed together
- Smaller transport options to get the initial 300 bales up there
- Ongoing requirements for all of the above until the situation is under
control
There has been a lot of work done behind the scenes already up there in
rescuing animals from snares, treating sick animals, and generally
creating awareness - all of this on a volunteer basis. We're appealing to
anyone who may be able to assist in whatever small way possibly to

rebuild Chipangali into the haven it once was.

Bringing hope to Zimbabwe's children . . .
Operation of Hope - Surgical Mission: July 2011
The US volunteer surgical team Operation of Hope returns to Zimbabwe this
July to offer free surgical repair for anyone suffering from cleft-lip
and cleft-palate facial deformities.
Venue: Harare Central Hospital, Lobengula Street, Southerton
Screening Day: Sunday 31 July 2011 at 8am
Surgery schedule: 1 August - 9 August 2011
All potential patients are encouraged to attend screening examinations at
Harare Central Hospital (peds ward) on Sunday 31 July at 8am. Please
bring all pertinent medical records and information.
If previously operated on by Operation of Hope, we will provide a free
follow-up examination during our visit.
All surgeries are free of charge. There is no cost to the patients or
families.
Care is for all ages. (Babies must be 3 months or older and as healthy as
possible)

Meyerbeer's last grand opera centres on Vasco da Gama and his love for

year shortly before her 80th birthday.

Sean Labuscagne and his fighting back team,who organised the fundraisers,
wish to extend their deepest gratitude,thanks and appreciation to all the
huge hearted,
wonderful people of Bulawayo who supported us in our time of need!
As you may know,Sean ( 24 ) was diagnosed with a rare form of aggressive
Lymphoma cancer in
November last year,and needed surgery to remove a 1.8 kg tumor offf his
left lung. This was then to be
followed up with 6 - 8 sessions of aggressive chemotherapy and possibly
radiation.
Due to the wonderful kindness,help and generosity from so many caring
people,he had the surgery and
6 sessions of chemotherapy.
Sean recently went to South Africa for a full check up and a PET scan,the
results were unbeleivable!! He was given
the all clear!!!! As you can imagine,this is an absolute blessing and
relief to us all!! Sean is doing so well and getting stronger every
day,his recovery has been nothing short of a miracle!!! Precautionary
scans will be done 6 monthly
and then annually for the next couple of years.
Again,we thank you all,so very much,for supporting Sean and all the
fundraisers,and really appreciate all you have done for him!

My name is Lydia Stoki and I am a cancer survivor. I was diagnosed and
given three months, last year September, and I owe my life to all the
people of Bulawayo, that without them I would never had made it. To all
those people who gave me donations which went towards the chemo I am so
humbled at your generosity and thank you so much. All those who prayed
for me made me feel very privileged and thankful to be included in your
prayers. I wish to thank Dr. S. Maksimovic who picked up on the cancer,
the amazing Mr. Ngwenya who did my operation. Dr. M. Dixon and his
amazing nurse who administered the Chemo. and Mohamed at the pharmacy .

ZANE - Tom Benyon is Walking for Zimbabwe - Again!
6th June 2011
Tom Benyon OBE, founder and director of ZANE, is setting out on another
epic
walk in aid of the destitute in Zimbabwe. Last year he walked from
Edinburgh to
London. This time will be from Land's End to London. He is 69 years old.
The walk in 2011 will be a total of 330 miles to raise funds for ZANE's
work
with the desperate people in Zimbabwe. Tom departs from Land's End on
Tuesday
14th June at 9.00 am.
Additional walkers are warmly encouraged and sponsorship forms, for those
wishing to obtain their own sponsors, are available.

LIONS CLUB OF KHUMALO - TRENANCE PROJECT
For the last three years we have been providing and overseeing food for a
meal for around 300 children once a week during term time. We have a team
of 6 ladies who volunteer the best part of a day each week to prepare and
cook in huge pots over open fires and serve up. This is a very deprived
area and depends on food handouts from NGO's which have largely dried up.
We have a list of 104 children from single or no parent families who are
being cared for by whoever has a big enough heart. The meal we provide
could well be the only balanced meal they have for the week. The school
was receiving food to provide breakfast but this has dried up. Many
children arrive at school hungry and with no food on them. We are keen to
help with fees but, unfortunately, so many deserving children are in
arrears and funds can only be used for current fees.
Recently we have tried to help the Primary school which was built for a
relatively small intake but is now expected to provide education for over
500 children and many have to be turned away. One class of around 40
children is held in a small garage where the children are crammed with
not an inch between desks and one of the KG classes is in a room no
bigger than a very small office. The Headmistress is desperate to improve
conditions at the school and we also are anxious to see two new
classrooms up and running before the rainy season. So far we have plans
and an estimate of $22 000 to complete such a building which would be
done under PWD guidance and will match the existing buildings . The
school managed to raise funds for the foundation and slab which has been
laid and they also have the sands and gravel ready and waiting. They will
also attempt to meet the labour costs. We can raise some of the required
funds but need help as we are not willing to start a commitment until we
know the full finance is available. We need 20 000 industrial bricks and
150 bags of cement to get work started.
We have tried various ideas to raise funds but money in that area is
rarely available for the $10 fee per child per term let alone the levy
and any other requirements. Children turn up in rags but are so keen not
to miss out. We did provide 10 girls' dresses to start improvement but
everything is a problem. The material is not easy to find and quality is
very poor.
We do appeal to any one or company which is in a position to give a hand
in cash or kind to see this project up and running. We recently renewed
the electricity throughout the school and hope there will be many
occasions when they are able to use educational aids.

pretending I was a model........

I noted with joy and fond memories your site and still spend nostalgic
moments thinking back to those wonderful days. I write to say thank you
for your efforts, and to ask whether you remember some of 'us' who
frequented the fair city so many years ago. At the time of writing, Jean
Ness (Eighth Avenue Pharmacy, Stobart and Wixley etc..) is still
searching for her 100th birthday as she celebrates her 97th this year in
George SA.
Unfortunately William (Jock) Ness the teacher at Gifford/Northlea and a
Hillside Bowls Player for many many years, went to the bathroom in 1992
and failed to emerge (78). His legacy lives on in the many hundreds of
men who made it good after going through his capable hands, and live in
countries throughout the world.
Also William, but refered to as Bill or Billy by many of my friends and
clubmates during those wonderful years, I now reside in the windswept and
cold Scotland, where we are experiencing winds of 100 mph at the moment.
Should your wonderful newscast come across a David Jacobs, a Christopher
Plaskitt, a Josephine Gregg, or indeed anyone who remembers me, I would
love to hear from them. There never has been, nor ever will be a place
like Zimbabwe or Rhodesia as I knew it, where 'God came to rest'. I have
never seen the likes of Rhodesians either, a warm sensitive people, both
black and white, many of whom have struggled to survive in a greedy and
often uncaring world. I remember an old English gentleman in an essex pub
once summed the the Rhodesians when he said, "You Rhodesians are such a
bloody romantic and sensitive lot, I still wonder what makes you all such
determined survivors?"
May I wish you, your friends, and your efforts every success for the
future, and hope oneday the sun will rise on a land where once again all
peoples will walk with joy and peace in their hearts.

WRIGHTS NURSERY NEWS LETTER: JUNE 2011
The rains have now officially ended and there was little meaningful rain
in May. It was a very strange season indeed. May has been very warm and
we have yet to see winter really set in. I have seen a bit of frost
damage in some vlei areas, which had some late maize in them but I think
this was a wind chill facto as the temperatures were not that low.
Fathers Day is the 3 rd Sunday of June for those of you who want to
splash out
WHATB TO DO IN JUNE
We are now midway between the seasons and there is not too much gardening
activity taking place. Things to do: -
Complete your frost preparations.
Keep going with your cutting back of the summer growth
There will be plenty of compostable material available now so keep
building your compost heaps.
Start to reduce watering on your roses to induce dormancy.
Do not prune your roses until late July when the chance of frost is
minimal.
Ideally your roses should be totally leafless and dormant. This will
mean that your rose has translocated all its nutrients into its roots and
will be ready to start a new season.
Check your variegated plants to see if they have any vigorous plain
green growth on them. Cut this back as it is the original parent plant
trying to establish its self.
Look at your trees now that the leaves are falling and see if you need
to do any major work on them whilst they are dormant.
Keep up with feeding your sweet-peas and winter bulbs.
Look at your lawn mower and see if it needs a full service.
Get all your garden tools out and see what needs repairing or
replacement.
Work on getting a good mulch around all your plants, especially your
roses.
ECO & ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
This time of the year we see folk raking up leaves, skoffeling the soil
and then burning every thing. This is a terrible waste of a valuable
resource and a is also a real nuisance with the awful acrid smoke that
develops for all the neighbors.
If you have a neighbor who looks like they are going that way ask them if
you could not have their waste if they do not want to make compost
themselves.
WHATS HAPPENING IN THE NURSERIES
We have opened a new mini nursery at " Stillhaven". It is situated at 18
Lawley Rd Suburbs. (Just behind the Hockey stadium and with its entrance
on 3 rd Ave) There are a number of new mini shops opening up there as
well as a number of activities including various types of dance groups,
meditation groups, raki, manicures and massages.
There is a good selection of Gwaai pots, indigenous trees and an ever
increasing range of selected plants.
Each Friday there is a Coffee & Cake Day and a variety of folk sell
quality 2 nd hand clothing, hand made jewelry and various other goods.You
can also pick up your Flower hand sprays there if it is more convenient
then coming out to Hillside
FAQ's For MAY
Probably the most frequently asked question this month was " What can I
fertilise my lawn with. it looks terrible?"
The answer is that it is now winter and the lawn no longer has the vigor
in it to maintain a green carpet. Any fertilizing now would be a waste of
time and money. The cold soils ( now down to about 10Oc) means that there
will be very little growth again until late August.
Let your lawn rest now and keep up with your watering. Next year do your
last seasons fertiilising in April and that will go a long way to
maintaining a good looking lawn.
