ABP South Wales
Ryder Cup 2010
CRUISE OPPORTUNITIES
In September 2010, the Celtic Manor Resort will host the World’s
third largest sporting event – the Ryder Cup. The event draws a
significant number of visitors (approx 40,000 per day) over the
several days of the competition, many of whom will require
overnight accommodation as near to the course as possible.
Significant corporate hospitality opportunities exist.
Port of Cardiff
Cardiff is currently marketed as a Cruise destination and the port is located within a mile of Cardiff
Bay with its bars and restaurants. The land based offer for cruise vessels calling for the Ryder Cup
is perhaps more suitable than Newport, and the Port handles less bulk cargoes. The port is 19
miles from the Celtic manor Resort and the port also benefits from being adjacent to the Cardiff
Heliport that could transport guests to the competition.
Maximum Vessel Size: Max LOA Max Beam Max Draft
240m* 26m* 9m*
* Larger vessels may be accepted up to the maximum lock size of 259m LOA x 27.4m Beam x 10m Draught, subject
to approval by the Harbour master
Vessel acceptance must be confirmed with the Harbour Master
Available Berths:
Cardiff has a number of port customers that have contractual agreements allowing them to bring
vessels into the port. During the Ryder Cup, commercial shipping operations will continue and
therefore vessels will need to be berthed so that they do not interfere with other port operations.
The initial proposals below can be accommodated without interfering with current operational
requirements, but should additional berths be required, then it may be possible to increase
availability by negotiating with port users.

Port of Newport
The Port of Newport is located a few miles from the Celtic Manor Resort that can be accessed by
Dual Carriageway, without the need to drive on the M4. Whilst The Port of Newport is not normally
marketed as a cruise destination, the proximity to the event offers some excellent opportunities.
Current port facilities do not cater for passenger traffic, however temporary structures and security
facilities can be provided as required, utilising existing port quayside facilities.

Port of Barry

berths available in Number 1 dock that are South Side
currently not utilised for commercial Number 1 Dock

smaller cruise vessels and large yachts.

Port of Swansea
Swansea is currently marketed as a Cruise destination and the port is located within a short
distance of the centre of Swansea and is approximately 55 miles from the Celtic Manor Resort. The
port is perhaps most suitable for vessels that may choose to visit for one day of the competition
and therefore want to minimise the sailing time to the port from their previous port of call. Vessels
could however also stay for the duration of the competition.

Previous events have made use of Cruise Ships to provide
accommodation. Cruise operators have run Ryder Cup SWANSEA
RYDER CUP
Cruises that include a call for the duration of the event.
Smaller cruise ships and super-yachts can also be used for
unique hospitality packages. NEWPORT

In order to maximise the benefits that the South Wales
Ports can provide during the event, this initial technical BARRY
document is designed to indicate the potential uses of each
of the South Wales Ports for vessels calling for the event.
