Workshop description:
Reflexology is a deeply relaxing and effective therapy that massages energy
points or reflex points on the feet and hands to relieve physical and mental
stress. In reflexology, the feet and hands each have points that reflect particular
areas of the body and, via the nervous system, serve as entry points to affect
those specific areas of the body. By using various kinds of finger pressure on
these areas or points of the hands and feet, one can affect organs, glands, joints,
spine, neck, shoulders -- any area of the body.
A Reflexology treatment might consist of a general massage to hands and/or the
feet, using techniques of kneading, stretching, rotations, finger pressure and
thumb-walking. Then, using some or all or these techniques, the practitioner
concentrates on reflexes for specific body areas such as the shoulder, neck or
knee areas; or points that are tender or sore which is an indication that the
related organ, gland or body area is out of balance.
Reflexology is a convenient and immediately available way to relax the hands,
feet and entire body – and it can initiate deeper healing in all areas of the body.
It is a particularly expedient method for interpreters to utilize on the job to reduce
job related stress. Historical accounts from Egypt, India and the Americas show
that healing work through the hands and feet has been practiced since ancient
times. Recent medical research validates the effectiveness of reflexology.
Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- describe the general concept of how Reflexology works
- show the Zone relationships of the feet (or hands) to
the rest of the body
- locate Reflex Areas on hands or feet and identify the body structure that it
corresponds to
- demonstrate assessment of a Reflex point/area
- demonstrate five basic techniques for working with feet or hands
- utilize basic techniques on a partner to affect specific areas of the body
- Utilize stretching and joint movements for specific areas to relieve on the job
stress.
