Theme: “Works of Heart”
The theme for this year’s auction pays tribute to those who generously donate their time, talents, and
resources to help those living with HIV / AIDS. This being the 30 year anniversary of what we now know
as HIV / AIDS – the theme also recognizes the healthcare professionals, and care givers who have
touched the lives of so many. At WNCAP, we gratefully thank the WNC artistic community, businesses,
and friends of WNCAP who continue to support us through their donations and volunteer time.

Honorary Chair: Dr. Polly E. Ross
We chose to honor Dr. Ross as the 2011 Honorary Chair in recognition of her tireless commitment and
contribution to people living with HIV / AIDS in Western North Carolina. Our clients describe Dr. Ross as
a gentle and caring physician – someone that they can always speak with and feel her trust and honor.
Dr. Ross is the co-founder and Medical Director of the WNC Community Health Services in Asheville.
She is a trailblazer in the early study of HIV, and you don’t want to miss what she has to say the night of
the auction! For more information on Dr. Ross please visit:

2011 Signature Piece Winner:
Hope Rising, by Constance Vlahoulis
WNCAP has a tradition of holding a juried competition each year to select it’s Signature Piece (SP) of art.
The jury selection was held on July 8th judges were Dawn Rentz, SP winner 2010, Jerry Johnson,
Publisher Laurel of Asheville, Susan Holden, art collector and museum guide. – Constance’s inspiration
for Hope Rising came from a photo she saw of poppies, recognizing that poppies symbolize
remembrance. She wanted to create an image that would both imply remembrance and hope for one
day the end of the HIV / AIDS crisis. Her oil on canvas is a vivid and striking piece that will be up for live
auction on September 24. You will find this image now in publications across WNC advertising the
auction, the feature on WNCAP’s poster, and the cover of the auction program. Second place of the
competition went to Nathaniel Galka, and third place to Stephen St. Claire. For more about Vlahoulis

On-line Auction:
For the first time ever, WNCAP is taking Raise Your Hand on-line! The on-line auction will feature 20

engaging the internet world to help raise the necessary funds. Raise Your Hand on-line will run

Partner Chefs:
WNCAP is thrilled for the second year to be working with 4 of Asheville’s favorite Chefs. Under the
leadership of Eric Scheffer of Dining Innovations & Vinnies – Joe Scully, Corner Kitchen, Michel
Baudouin, Bouchon, and Anthony Cerrato, Fiore’s Ristorante Toscana - the Chefs will come together and
put on a vast array of specialty foods to delight the attendees of this year’s auction during the 6:00 –
8:00 pm cocktail reception & silent and live auctions. Each Chef will prepare a food station featuring
their very own specialties. – Another attraction for the auction will feature each Chef donating a unique
food service offering as part of the live auction. In 2010 the Chef’s donated custom dinners prepared on
site or at your home. This wonderful donation brought over $6,000.00 to WNCAP’s auction in 2010. It’s
an exciting part of the live auction!
