Notes
Connection – preparing students’ thinking
Remind students that they have worked with clip art to add
pictures to documents. Ask the students how they could add
their own picture to a document.
Teaching – Mini Lesson
Show the class the digital camera(s) that they will be using.
Explain that unless you have a camera per student, that they will
have to share and take turns taking their pictures and loading
them onto their computers. Demonstrate how to take a picture
using the camera. Remind students of how close they need to
be, where to see what the picture is of, the settings they should
keep the camera on, and not to move while taking the picture.
Have the students get into groups based on the number of
cameras available. Remind students that they need to take one
picture of something in nature that will go with the poem they
have written in class. As a class, go outside and have each
student take a picture for his or her poem. Make sure each

student has one picture that they like.
Return to the computer lab. Demonstrate to the students how
to connect the camera to their computer using the appropriate
cord. When the pictures load, show the students how to choose
their picture and name it and save it on their computer. Once
they have saved their picture to the appropriate location, show
them how to safely remove the device from the computer so
that no information is lost. Once it has been removed have them
pass the computer and cord along to another student in their
group to do the same.
(Students may be finished early from saving their picture or may
be waiting a while for their turn. This would be a good time for
the students to be working on a site they know, for example,
Emgames.com).
Active Engagement – Guided Practice
Students will take pictures to go with their poem
The teacher will monitor that each student has a chance to
take his or her own picture.
Link
Tell students that they will now take turns in their groups to
save the picture they took onto their own computer.
Independent Practice
Teacher
• Monitor and offer support saving the pictures as needed.
Students
• Take turns using the camera and cord to download and save
their picture to their computer. They may also help other
students in their group if needed. If not, they should be
working at Emgames.com when working on their picture.
Sharing/Closure
• Have the students share what they enjoyed and difficulties
they had using the digital camera.
Assessment
• Monitor each student with a score of 1-4, according to his or
her proficiency during independent practice and the saved
activity. A 3 represents a student who was able to work well in
their group, take a good picture, download, name, and save it
to their computer.
