2005 OUTLOOK LIMESTONE COLLEGE

 2
       The 2005 Limestone Softball team
is primed for an outstanding season. After surviving to
play on the CVAC tournament’s final day last season,
Limestone returns an excellent core to go with a strong
       recruiting class.

0 In 2004 the Saints finished the regular season with a 23-25
record. An 11-17 conference record was good for the #4
seed entering the Conference Tournament. The Saints

 0
played an outstanding tournament, but were unable to
overcome the CVAC’s Player of the Year, St. Andrews’
       Tina Gonsalves.

 5
In their first game of the tourney, Limestone met St.
Andrews for an eleven-inning marathon. Both teams had
chances to win, but St. Andrews capitalized with an
eleventh inning homer that put the Saints in the position of needing three wins on Saturday to
survive in the tournament. Limestone would do just that, defeating Barton 10-1, Pfeiffer 10-2, and
Queens 5-4 in a nine-inning affair. That outstanding offensive day put Limestone in the semifinals
on Sunday. Unfortunately the Lady Saints once again ran into Gonsalves and the St. Andrews

O
Knights. Gonsalves hurled a 3-hitter and the Knights prevailed 6-1.

The 2005 Saints return an excellent core and were picked 3rd in the CVAC’s Preseason Coaches’
Poll, their highest preseason ranking since joining the CVAC. The Saints’ previous high was 4th in

U
2001. Limestone returns two of the CVAC’s premier hitters in Amy Yates and Keisha Powell.
Both sluggers ranked among the league’s leaders in Avg, HR, and RBI last season. Yates hit .403
with 8 HR and 26 RBI and was successful on 18-of-18 stolen base attempts, earning 1st-team All-
CVAC honors. She was also named to the CVAC’s All-Tournament team after hitting .429-3-5 in
five games. Powell led the league with 11 HR and 45 RBI while hitting for a .336 average. Powell

T
also brings a powerful presence on the mound. She recorded 17 wins in 2004 to go with a 2.93
ERA and 99K’s. Coutney Silva is also back for her senior year and will anchor the Saints outfield.
Silva ranked 5th on the squad last year with 36 hits and 3rd with 23 runs scored.

L
Also returning from last year are a pair of sophomores in Lauren Miceli (.348-5-34) and pitcher
Elizabeth Hawkins (6-9, 4.01 ERA, 41K). Both Miceli and Hawkins are coming off outstanding
freshman campaigns. Miceli earned 2nd-team All-CVAC honors for her performance, while
Hawkins went 2-1 in the CVAC Tournament with a 1.33 ERA and 7Ks.

O
Among the team’s newcomers, catcher Jessica Brown,
third baseman Brittany Owen, second baseman Heidi
Odom, and first basemen Heather Wood and Haley Rape
are all expected to compete for starting positions in the

O
infield. The Lady Saints have also brought in Lindsay
Gladden and Keisha Thompson to solidify the outfield,
as well as Samantha Weaver to bolster the pitching staff.

K
The 2005 Saints will feature plenty of youth, but will
also have tremendous leadership from their
upperclassmen. Limestone hopes that their freshmen
will develop over the course of the season and excel
down the stretch and in the CVAC Tournament. The
Lady Saints have all the pieces to put together an
                                                  outstanding season.

 LIMESTONE FACILITIES LIMESTONE COLLEGE

                                        Limestone Physical Education Center

Limestone College made a major announcement in the summer of 2004. The College will build a new physical
education center, expected to be completed in the late spring of 2005. The new facility will offer three classrooms,
nine offices, locker rooms, Athletic Training Education facilities, a fitness center, and a wrestling practice facility.

Located on Thompson street near Limestone Springs, the facility will be the first new building on the Limestone
campus since the Timken Center was dedicated 30 years ago. The Physical Education facility will give Limestone’s
Athletic Training Education Program the necessary space to meet accreditation standards of the American Medical
Association’s Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs which will allow Limestone
students to sit for the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification Examination.

In addition to the new Athletic Training facilities, the facility will also house a 3,900 square foot weight training
facility which will be a great asset for Limestone’s approximately 300 varsity athletes as well as all other students,
faculty, and staff. Limestone’s wrestling team, which begins competition in the 2004-2005 school year, will have a
practice area in the new building, although the team will hold its matches in the Timken Center.

The Timken Center, built in 1976, is the center of the Limestone Athletic Department, housing athletic offices,
athletic training facilities, and classrooms. The Timken Center also houses Limestone’s basketball arena, a 1,500 seat
facility that hosts men’s and women’s basketball games as well as volleyball and wrestling matches. Limestone’s
junior Olympic sized pool is also located inside the Timken Center. Home to the Lady Saints Swimming Team, the
pool features an 800 square foot observation balcony coupled with 2,500 square feet of deck space.

Limestone College was established in 1845 by Dr. Thomas Curtis and his son, Dr.
William Curtis, distinguished scholars born and educated in England. Limestone
College was the first woman’s college in South Carolina and one of the first in the
     United States.

In the late 1960s, Limestone College became fully coeducational. The campus is a
unique combination of history and progress, with nine of our campus buildings
included on the National Register of Historic Places.
Since 1991, Limestone College has completed
renovations of several of its historic campus structures:
the Montgomery Classroom Building, Ebert Residence
Hall, Carroll Fine Arts Building, Hamrick Hall of
Science, Eunice Ford Residence Hall, and Dixie Lodge
Student Center. While the College’s ties to the past are
visible in the many historic structures, these renovated
facilities now house the modern technology necessary to
maintain Limestone’s reputation as an outstanding
     liberal arts college. Dixie Lodge
