Andy Carter Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics
Andy	Carter is entering his seventh year as the Newberry College Director of Athletics, having joined the Newberry
family in September of 2002. Since taking the helm, Carter has spearheaded several projects in order to turn Newberry
Athletics into one of the premier programs in Division II.
Carter came to Newberry after 17-year tenure at Missouri Baptist University. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree
from the NAIA institution, he began his career as an admissions recruiter and assistant baseball coach while working on
his master’s of business administration at Lindenwood University. His degree completion led him to a faculty position
as an Instructor of Business Administration and Economics at Missouri Baptist, while at the same time serving the school
    as head baseball coach.
Carter took over as baseball coach in 1991 and during his nine seasons at the helm won seven consecutive conference
championships. Seven years into a successful coaching career, he also took over as Missouri Baptist’s athletic director. He
served in both roles for two years before leaving coaching in order to devote all his attention to administrative duties.
Almost immediately upon his arrival at Newberry, Carter presented the Board of Trustees with the “Newberry College
N Athletic Initiative”, a long-term plan to secure future athletic success, while maintaining Newberry’s excellent academic
E record for its athletics teams. Newberry has undergone an overhaul of its athletic program, instituting a stringent evalu-
ation process for all varsity sports.
W The results were almost immediate, as the athletic program nearly doubled South Atlantic Conference victories in
consecutive years under Carter’s reign. Also, for the first time since 1999, Newberry enhanced its offering of varsity sports, adding wrestling and
B competitive cheerleading.
Academic achievement and student development are the cornerstones of the department. A growing student-athlete population (222 in 2002-03
E up to 500 in 2007-08) have set the standard in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) by winning four of the past five GPA titles and have achieved
R a cumulative GPA as high as 3.01 (2007-2008). The College’s commitment, as evidenced by the implementation of our Mentoring Skills program,
is to maintain this success for the future.
R The student-athlete experience directly correlates to the relationship they have with their head coach. Annual evaluations and emphasis on desired
results produced by the head coaches in the department aided in staff hiring and the development process. The success in hiring and developing
Y all departmental staff (Coaches, administration, and staff) is directly correlated to the commitment shown by the College.
The tenure of our head coaches, each program’s win-loss records, and the quality of each incoming recruiting class provide a window of the varied
levels of success that will continue blessing the College for years to come.
S Facility enhancement has also been a major focal point for this administration. In the summer of 2006 a new Astro Turf football field was installed.
This provided a state of the art field for practice and competition. The team responded by winning all 9 games played at Setzler Field, including our
O first ever NCAA DII post-season victory. Through the fall 2007 season, Newberry football has produced a 15-0 home record on the new turf.
The 2007-2008 academic year brought the Phase I completion of the first of three new facilities at the Smith Road Athletic Complex with the
F completion of the Baseball facility. This facility will be the proud home for Newberry baseball for years to come and will provide a great opportu-
nity to engage our community. The other facilities slated for the Smith Road Complex are new Softball and Soccer facilities. Also, the Newberry
T basketball and volleyball teams began playing last season on a new finished gym floor, powered by a brand new, state-of-the art lighting system.
B Future plans include new facilities for the men’s and women’s tennis teams and determining the best course of action to give the football facilities
at Seltzer Field its first facelift in almost 20 years.
A Success on the fields, courts, and fairways has come as the result of great processes. Our coaches have taught their student-athletes that we
must win every day; in the classroom and on the fields, courts, and fairways. During the 2002-03 year we won 19% of SAC competitions. The
L progress has been steady and reached 53% in 2006-2007. This marked the first time the department ever eclipsed the 50% winning percentage
since becoming a DII SAC member. Other competitive successes have come in the All-Sports competition. In 2002-03, we scored 21 points across
L the 14 representative sport programs. This placed Newbery last in the SAC standings, a place they have finished each year. Once again, the rise
has been steady as we scored successively more points each year leading up to the 2006-07 year when we scored 76 points and finished third in
the standings, only 6 points out of first place. What a wonderful testament to the support of the College Administration and the hard work of the
    staff and student-athletes.
As the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, he serves on the Newberry President’s Cabinet, under Dr. Mitchell Zais. He also is member of
the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and serves as a Board Member for the D2 Athletics Director’s Association.
Carter is married to his wife of 23 years, Rena. They have seven children: Aaron (20), a senior cadet at USMA-West Point, Becca (19), Beth (16),
    Jake (14), Rachel (12), Caleb (10), and Micah (8).

Newberry College...
     And The Newberry Community
Newberry College has an annual budget of over $16,500,000.
The College employs about 225 people—165 salaried and 60 hourly.
The monthly payroll exceeds $600,000 and monthly purchases and
              contracts average $700,000.
Over 900 students and 225 employees make purchases in the
              community every day.
The College sponsors around 60 cultural events each year—concerts,
              plays, art exhibits, lectures.
The College hosts around 175 sporting events per year with their 15
NCAA Division II teams—8 men, 7 women.
A number of off-campus groups use college facilities for special events.
For example, the SC Lutheran Synod Assembly and the SC Lutheran
Youth Convention each bring over 400 people into the community.
We also host the South Carolina Women of the ELCA, a state-wide
ROTC camp, the South Carolina Middle and Senior High Jazz Band
Competition, the South Carolina Middle and High School Science
Olympiads, the South Carolina Guidance Counselor Conference,
several athletic camps, and many more.
Special events such as Homecoming, graduations in May and
December, Convocations, and accreditation visits in multiple programs
bring thousands of visitors to Newberry.

A study conducted by the Newberry Chamber of Commerce in 1998
concluded the College has the following economic impact on the
city. With major growth in enrollment and accounting for inflation,
these numbers would be significantly higher today.

“The economic impact of the Newberry College payroll is $28,000,000.”
“The economic impact of total Newberry College spending is
               $84,000,000.”
“The economic impact of student spending is $10,000,000.”
“The total economic impact of Newberry College is over $100,000,000
               per year.”
