Title 5, Section 55378 requires that each proposed or existing course, if delivered by distance education, shall be separately reviewed and approved according to a District’s certified course approval process. The distance education course should be reviewed through the six-year cyclical review process of Program Review pursuant to Title 5, Section 55201. Approval Process
Courses are initiated by and approved at college level by faculty in the discipline and/or department/division/cluster. College Curriculum Committee review each proposed and existing course offered through distance education separately in accordance with the provision of Title 5, sections 55002, 55370, 55372, 55374 and 55376. The review and approval of distance education courses shall follow the curriculum approval procedures outlined in Administrative Regulation E-65 – Approval of Credit Courses: Standards and Procedures. Students from around the state need a Sociology 28 (The Family) to be taught via distance education (online). This online class is essential for students who are in need of a flexible schedule. The assurance that this online course is equivalent to a class taught by standard methods is the incorporation of the following teaching methods: (1) Assignments (essays, research projects, sociological theoretical analysis of topics), (2) Lectures/Lessons (using PowerPoint for lecture presentation on every textbook chapter weekly, (3) Chats -4 designated chats on issues/topics for “class discussion” and “class socialization” purposes, and (4) Exams (midterm and final examinations that correspond with lecture/lessons, testing knowledge and understanding of materials. 2. Aside from the “Post Week Thought”, students may schedule a meeting with the instructor. Meetings must be scheduled in advance with the instructor. Instructor is available by phone as needed. Weekly, instructor will post message via the “Post Week Thought” Forum and/or “News Forum” for updates and responses to questions sent by students. 4 chats are scheduled during the semester. Students must participate in a minimum of 1(one) chat. These chats discuss topics/themes related to course material.

This is an option in case of emergency, technical problems, disability issues. This option is only upon request/petition by the student. Midterm and Final Examinations will be via online.
Is Adequate technology and support available? Describe. The college serves students with several computer labs should their computers not function or serve properly. Technicians and/or computer assistants in each lab will aid students. In addition, the instructor of the course is available via phone and email for questions and technical support. If the technical support is not sufficient or doesn’t resolve the technical problem, modifications of due dates for assignments, chats or tests, will be an option.
