within the historic core of a village of archaeological significance, and observations recorded a multiple

inhumation burial, probably of Roman date. The burials were lifted because they were threatened by

recorded. [Au(abr)]

LAND OFF STAMFORD ROAD, OAKHAM

Statement (Report No. 698)

Nichol, K Birmingham : Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit, 2000, 14pp, figs,

tabs, refs

Work undertaken by: Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit

Excavation revealed a series of Iron Age/Romano-British enclosures and associated features located

along the southern bank of the stream that formed the northern extent of the site. Archaeological

deposits survived largely at the bottom of the valley slope where they were protected from later

truncation by ploughing by a build up of colluvium/alluvium, c.1m thick in places. Further up the hill

slope only the most substantial features had survived. The evidence suggested that flash floods

occurred during occupation of the site, necessitating the re-cutting of eaves drip gullies and other more

shallow features. Drainage was of obvious importance, as attested by a complex of ditches, orientated

north-south, which would have originally drained into the stream. [Au]

Archaeological Investigations Project 2000 Post-Determination & Non-Planning Related Projects

East Midlands Region

Work undertaken by: Archaeological Project Services

Previous investigations had revealed post holes and gullies, defining field or plot boundaries of

probable medieval date. The watching brief revealed a group of undated postholes, ditches and a pit.

Although undated the postholes may have formed a fence line or post-built structure, whilst the ditches

probably functioned as drainage or boundary ditches. Evidence of the change in land use from

cultivation to pasture and its division, was implied by the recovery of a calf burial and the cutting of a

north-south aligned ditch. The recovery of a moderately large quantity of medieval pottery and

smelting slag suggested that the site had been used during the period, with iron smelting probably being

carried out in the vicinity of, rather than on, the site. Cultivation in the 18th-19th century was suggested

by the retrieval of pottery. Other finds included modern pottery, glass, clay pipe, brick, iron objects

and two whetstones. Four prehistoric flint artefacts were also recovered. [Au(abr)]

Following evaluation trenching work where remains of mid Saxon date were identified an

archaeological watching brief was carried out. Topsoil stripping at the southern end of the site revealed

no archaeological features, whilst removal of demolition layers to the north revealed a system of

sewers and cesspits that part of the original school building's underground plumbing system. To the

west of the former reading room only a stone land drain, already recorded in the evaluation trenching

was found, whilst a 4m X 4m x 5m pit excavated to house the development's pumping station revealed

no archaeological features. [Au(abr)]
