                               Order to the Eastern Star
                                     Fairfax, VA

                                     May/June 2009

Sisters and Brothers,

At our May meeting, we installed two Star Points – Sister Fonda Wise, Adah, and Sister
Hazel Cross, Esther. Sister Joy Simpson, PGM, filled the station of Installing Chaplain,
Sister Debbie Weaver was Installing Marshal, and Sister Ruth Meagher was Installing
Organist. We do appreciate your help with this installation. Sister Paula Franchak,
Associate Matron, won the “Lucky Star Mother” drawing.

We have been busy since the May meeting. On May 9, four members helped Sister Irene
Viereck, Faith Chapter No.177, celebrate her 100th Birthday, unfortunately she passed
away on May 18. Then on May 12, we served and cleaned up at the dinner prior to the
Grand Master’s official visit to Henry Lodge. Thanks to everyone who came and helped.
Also it was nice to see Brother Art Leavenworth, PP, whom we had not seen in some
time. Next from May 17 – 20, we attended Grand Chapter in Hampton, VA. The
Worthy Matron’s Grand Chapter Report follows this newsletter. Both the Worthy Matron
and Worthy Patron sincerely thank the Chapter for the privilege of representing you at
this Grand Chapter session.

Sister Betty Holland has moved to a retirement community in Sterling, VA near her
Granddaughters, Becky and Leah. Her new address is 22355 Providence Village Drive, #
127, Sterling, VA 20164. Her telephone number remains the same, 703 402-1146. She
reports that she is almost settled in her new home, likes living there, and is making new
friends; however, she would appreciate visits and telephone calls from her Sisters and
Brothers.

The Worthy Matron has a Pampered Chef order consisting of two recipe books, a
wedding registry, a pink dots micro fiber towel, and a set of four daisy dessert plates. We
have been unable to determine who placed this order. If this is your order or you know
who it belongs to, please contact either the Worthy Matron or Sister Debbie Weaver, 703
399-6965.

Dates to remember follow:

Sunday, May 31, 4 PM dinner Red Lobster, Fairfax, 6 PM School of Instruction, when
we will be covering Initiation and Memorial. Please advise the Worthy Matron if you
will be able to meet us for dinner, or if you are an officer and will not be able to attend
the School. The Tupperware orders placed at the Spring Fling are to be delivered on this
date. The Worthy Matron will also have the new directories to distribute to those who
placed orders at the May Meeting.
Friday, June 5, 8 PM, Stated Meeting. We will be initiating two candidates, having a
Memorial for Sisters Margaret Frederick, PM, and Nancy Crismond, PGM, and
celebrating Flag Day and Father’s Day. Only Brothers will be eligible to win this
drawing and become our “Lucky Star Father.” Officers, please contact the Worthy
Matron at the earliest possible time, if you will be unable to attend either the meeting or
fill your office for the Initiation. Please do not get your own protem without the approval
of the Worthy Matron as this will eliminate any confusion that could arise.

Saturday, June 6, 5 PM. The Chapter has been invited to Sister Tiffany Nettles’ wedding
to be held at the home of her Grandmother, Sister Faye Pollard, 940 Dismal Hollow
Road, Front Royal. For those who volunteered to help with the reception, you should be
at Sister Faye’s by 3:30 – 4 PM. For those who volunteered to provide food but will be
unable to attend, please bring your food to the Friday meeting or have it at the Lodge by
2 PM on Saturday. Thank you to all who volunteered to help with this event.

Sunday, June 7, 4 PM. District No. 20 School of Instruction, Herndon Lodge, Grace and
Elden Streets, Herndon 20170 with dinner provided by Herndon Chapter No. 55 to
follow. Our Assistant Lecturer, Brother Paul Turner, will be covering Opening,
Introductions, Memorial, Balloting, Closing, and discussing Grand Chapter changes.

Saturday, June 13, 4 PM. Star Point covered dish dinner and pound auction at the home
of Sister Lee and Brother Joe Hyer, 2521 Fowler’s Lane, Reston 20191. All members
including Brothers are invited to join us for this evening of food and fellowship.

Tuesday, June 23, Scottish Rite Theater Night at Alexandria Little Theater at a cost of
$15.00 each. Contact Clesson McDonald, 703 591-3018, if you would like to attend or
need more details.

July 4, 7:30 AM. Henry Lodge Child ID, Fairfax Volunteer Fire Station, University
Drive, Fairfax. The members of the Chapter have been invited to help the Lodge with
this community service. If you can help, please contact the Worthy Matron.

Since this will be our last newsletter before the summer break (July and August), we hope
you will enjoy the summer and get yourselves rejuvenated for the fall activities.

We look forward to seeing you at the June meeting, schools, and other activities
mentioned above.

                                Sincerely and Fraternally,

                            GRAND CHAPTER REPORT
                                May 17-20, 2009

On Sunday, May 17, we arrived in a downpour of rain at the Embassy Suites Hotel that a
joins the Hampton Convention Center. After receiving our Grand Chapter information
from Credentials, we proceeded to get checked in at the hotel and get our room keys.
Here mass confusion reigned; however, we spent the time in line waiting by greeting
Sisters and Brothers from other chapters and collecting hugs and kisses.

Hope Chapter was represented by six members for the entire session (Sisters Debbie
Weaver, Shirley Sutphin, Faye Pollard, Tommie Jordan and Brothers Ray Wise and Ray
Wiseman) with one member (Sister Carol Stanton) joining us for the Wednesday evening
installation of Grand Chapter Officers. We also had two dual members (Sisters Fonda
Wise and Margot Lyddane) and several honorary members attend this “Garden of
Friendship” Session. The Registration Committee reported that a total of 917 registered
this year.

At the Monday evening session Sister Fonda Wise participated in the Cavalcade of Flags
as Grand Representative of Puerto Rico. The Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in VA
and a Past Patron of Queen Esther Chapter No. 14 brought greetings along with
representatives from the International Order of Job’s Daughters, International Order of
the Rainbow for Girls, Grand Court of VA Order of the Amaranth, Grand Chapter of
Royal Arch Masons in VA, and Scottish Rite Masons. This was followed by
introductions beginning with a Past Most Worthy Grand Matron and ending with the
Personal and Session Pages, Emblem Bearers, Grand Ushers, and Grand Flag Bearers.
Thankfully, your Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron managed to keep their eyes open
and be introduced with the Worthy Matrons and Worthy Patrons of 2009-2010.

The Worthy Patron and Sister Shirley Sutphin spent part of the session at the Registration
desk; Sister Debbie Weaver spent lots of her time at the Credentials desk; Brother Ray
Wiseman, Vice Chairman of Security, protected us; Sister Faye Pollard stayed busy as a
vendor selling her beautiful jewelry; and the Worthy Matron being a member of the
Necrology Committee participated in the Necrology service.

Hope Chapter was represented at many of the breakfasts, luncheons, and banquets
including the PAGO Luncheon, Secretaries and Treasurers Luncheon, SAT Luncheon,
Past Grands Banquet, and the Worthy Matrons and Worthy Patrons Banquet.
At the day long Wednesday session, the following Grand Officers were elected:
Worthy Grand Matron Sister Georgia “Jo” Jett (123)
Worthy Grand Patron Brother Donald Phillips (42)

                                    Sister Ruth Carter (11)

The installation of Grand Officers held on Wednesday evening was special as we
watched our Sister Debbie Weaver being installed as Grand Marshal and our honorary
member, Sister Ruth Meagher, being installed as Grand Chaplain. Congratulations to
both of you. We hope you will enjoy your Grand Offices, and pray that God will keep
you safe as you travel throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and to other Grand
Jurisdictions.
