IN BRIEF
Toyota’s light commercial vehicles have established a well-deserved reputation for
hard work and durability. These qualities remain at the heart of the latest generation
of Hiace vans, vehicles which have been developed to offer a business-friendly
combination of reliability, practicality and adaptability with competitive purchase and
running costs.
Powertrains
Hiace is powered by 2.5-litre D-4D common rail diesel engines that are strong on
power and torque and give flexible driving performance. At the same time they offer
good fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

The engines are badged D-4D 95 and D-4D 120, denoting their approximate power
output. Each is available in both the short and long-wheelbase Hiace 280 and 300
models.
Design and Equipment
Hiace is distinguished by its bold front-end styling, with large, multi-reflector
headlights, a prominent bonnet with chrome trim and a large chrome grille. On the
inside the cabin has a smart appearance with cloth upholstery, silver-finish trim
details, chrome instrument bezels and a four-spoke steering wheel.
The range features a single, high-specification grade. Owners looking to add extra
personal touches can take advantage of accessory packs and options. Key
equipment features include a radio and CD player with MP3 compatibility (files stored
on disc), air conditioning and electrically adjustable heated door mirrors; full-map
satellite navigation with Electronic Traffic Avoidance (ETA) function is available as an
option.
All models benefit from ABS and a driver’s airbag as part of the standard equipment
package.
Short and long wheelbase chassis enable competitive payload weights to be carried
within generously proportioned load areas. Loading and unloading, even in confined
areas, is made easier thanks to a low load floor and sliding side door, and lighting is
provided as standard in the cargo area.
The model range is named to reflect each van’s gross vehicle weight. Thus the 280
(SWB) and the 300 (LWB) have respective gross vehicle weights of 2,800 and
3,000kg.

TOYOTA D-4D ENGINES
Toyota offers two versions of its 2.5-litre D-4D common rail diesel engine in Hiace, to
give strong performance, fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions performance. There
is a choice of outputs to suit different customer needs.
Maximum power from the entry-level D-4D 95 unit is 94bhp at 3,600rpm, with 230Nm
of torque available all the way from 1,400 to 2,400rpm for impressive pulling power.
The higher performance version of the engine, the D-4D 120 delivers output of
115bhp and torque peak torque of 294Nm, from 1,600 to 2,400rpm.
Hiace has a wide torque band in both engines, meaning less gear changing to
achieve maximum torque power delivery which in turn makes for a more comfortable
driving experience.
Hiace remains competitive in its market segment, delivering the performance owners
expect. The D-4D 120 has a maximum speed of 94mph and is characterised by
strong mid-range acceleration performance.
Performance does not compromise Toyota’s commitment to achieving low running
costs. Service intervals are at 10,000 miles/annually.

HARD-WORKING HIACE
Hiace is well-established as a top performer in its class, with its great versatility and
hallmark Toyota durability. The power steering, tight turning circle, sliding side door
and low cargo floor make the Hiace easy to manoeuvre and load and unload in
confined areas, such as building sites and city centre streets. Owners can choose
either a rear tailgate with heated rear window and wiper or double rear doors that
open to 180 degrees. A steel bulkhead is fitted as standard between the cab and
loadspace, but can be removed pre-delivery if required.
The short and long wheelbase models can accommodate generous payloads: the
280 (SWB) model can carry a single standard Europallet and the 300 (LWB) two.
Their respective gross vehicle weights are 2,800 and 3,000kg.
STYLE AND COMFORT
Hiace has a bold, contemporary look with a prominent bonnet and large, multi-
reflector headlights. The distinctive large chrome finished grille serves a practical
purpose by helping feed more air into the engine’s intercooler.
In the cabin the three seats are finished in smart but hard-wearing dark cloth
upholstery, with fabric-covered door panels with integrated armrests adding to the
comfort and quality appeal. The dashboard is brightened up with silver-finish trim
details and chrome instrument bezels.
STRONG ON SAFETY
Hiace benefits from a robust construction with front crumple zones and strong side
impact bars incorporated into the design to help provide excellent protection in the
event of an accident.
All models are equipped with ABS, a driver’s airbag and pre-tensioned, height-
adjustable seatbelts with pre-tensioners for driver and outer passenger.
EQUIPMENT SPECIFICATION
Hiace is available in concise model range that has a single, high equipment
specification.
Key features include a CD tuner with MP3 compatibility (files played from disc), air
conditioning and electrically adjustable heated door mirrors. Electric windows, a tilt-
4
adjustable steering wheel, height-adjustable driver’s seat, tinted glass, driver’s
armrest, a glass window in the bulkhead, remote central locking and internal rear
door release are also all provided as standard.
Accessories and options
To complement Hiace’s generous specification, accessory packs and equipment
options have been designed, enabling owners to tailor their vehicle to suit their needs
or preferences.
Bluetooth hands-free connectivity forms a key element in the Professional Pack,
which also includes rear parking sensors. The Metallic package provides colour-
keyed bumpers and door handles as standard with any of the metallic paint options.
HISTORY AND MARKET PROFILE
Hiace competes in a market for Euro-sized semi-bonnet vans and demand now
comes from a much wider range of businesses, well beyond those looking for a
simple delivery vehicle.
The current Hiace body design concept was introduced as the PowerVan in October
1995, taking Toyota away from the old ‘cab-over’ design to a more contemporary
semi-bonnet style with a longitudinally mounted engine. Dimensions were calculated
to ensure it could accommodate standard Europallets in both standard and long
wheelbase forms.
Hiace has been a global success, marketed in five continents and built in facilities in
seven different countries.
