READING, WRITING, AND READINESS…THE IMPORTANCE OF FOSTERING EARLY CHILDHOOD SOCIAL-
EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE CHILD CARE SETTING. JANE FREUDENBERGER, GSW FAMILY SERVICE OF
GREATER BATON ROUGE
The past 20 years has provided a solid research base indicating the importance of the first few years of life. It is during this
time that children will grow and develop the foundational skills they need to be successful in school and in their lives.
Getting children ready to succeed in school begins at birth and is critically impacted by the child’s relationship with his or
her caregivers. It is beginning in infancy that a child develops the cognitive, physical, language, social, and emotional skills
that are key to school readiness. Children who enter kindergarten without the social and emotional skills necessary to
learn often lag behind their peers. This workshop will provide the participants with knowledge about early childhood social-
emotional development and the many ways that the relationship between the child and caregiver, as well as classroom
environment, will promote this development. Jane Freudenberger is a master degreed, licensed social worker and has
been a Mental Health Consultant with the Quality Start program since its beginning in July 2007. Prior to becoming a
