11 TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF
12 TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERSECTION LOCATED
13 AT THE JUNCTION OF STATION 22 ½ AND JASPER
14 BOULEVARD ON SULLIVAN’S ISLAND IN CHARLESTON
15 COUNTY “DR. GEORGE G. DURST, SR. INTERSECTION”
16 AND PLACE APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS
17 INTERSECTION THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS “DR.
18 GEORGE G. DURST, SR. INTERSECTION”.

20 Whereas, Dr. George G. Durst, Sr. was born in Greenwood County
21 on May 25, 1909, and died on June 15, 1996; and
22
23 Whereas, he was a distinguished and outstanding physician who
24 provided over forty years of exceptional medical care and
25 assistance to the residents of the community east of the Cooper
26 River in Charleston County; and
27
28 Whereas, he received his undergraduate degree from Clemson
29 University and his Doctor of Medicine degree with honors from
30 the Medical College of South Carolina; and
31
32 Whereas, during the initial phase of World War II, he organized
33 and served as Chief of the Out-Patient Clinic at Fort Jackson.
34 During the latter years of this conflict, Dr. Durst served as Chief
35 Surgeon with the allied forces in Europe as a member of the Army
36 Medical Corps; and
37
38 Whereas, when the war ended in Europe, Dr. Durst was a full
39 colonel at the age of thirty-five and commanded the Army Ground
40 Forces Medical Reinforcement Command of the entire European
41 theater. His distinguished combat service during the D-Day
42 invasion at Normandy earned him a Bronze Star; and

2 Whereas, following his return from military service in Europe, Dr.
3 Durst established the Durst Family Practice on Sullivan’s Island,
4 and donated his professional time and clinical medical skills by
5 teaching the next generation of medical students at the Medical
6 University of South Carolina; and

8 Whereas, during his medical professional career, he served as
9 President of the Charleston County Medical Society, Chairman of
10 the Board of the Charleston County Hospital and President of the
11 South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Family
12 Practice; and
13
14 Whereas, in addition to his commitment to the medical profession,
15 Dr. Durst also found time to devote much of his life to the cause of
16 improving the services that local government provides to the
17 citizens of his community by serving on the Sullivan’s Island
18 Township Commission for twenty-two years and a member of the
19 Charleston County Council for many years; and
20
21 Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to forever recognize the
22 many years of military, public, and professional service rendered
23 by this unique, talented gentleman and physician by naming an
24 intersection in his honor on his beloved Sullivan’s Island. Now,
25 therefore,

27 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
28 concurring:
29
30 That the members of the General Assembly, requests that the
31 Department of Transportation name the intersection located at the
32 junction of Station 22 ½ and Jasper Boulevard on Sullivan’s Island
33 in Charleston County “Dr. George G. Durst, Sr. Intersection” and
34 place appropriate markers or signs at this intersection that contain
35 the words “Dr. George G. Durst, Sr. Intersection”.

37 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
38 the Department of Transportation.
