					This document provides a useful how-to strategy for employees seeking tuition
reimbursement from their employer. This document is designed specifically for
employees interested in furthering their education in a job related field based on
financial assistance and support from their employer. Employees should use this four-
step guide to strategically and successfully request tuition reimbursement from your
employer, even if the employer does not have an existing tuition reimbursement
program.
        HOW TO REQUEST TUITION REIMBURSEMENT FROM YOUR EMPLOYER

Many employers recognize the value of offering a tuition reimbursement program to its employees. Employers have
a vested interest in ensuring that employees have the knowledge and skills required to be successful in their current
positions and future advancements within the organization.

A tuition reimbursement program encourages further education and training for its employees which in turn increases
overall employee competency and contribution levels.

By earning an advanced degree in a field related to your job, you can become a more productive, marketable, and
valued employee.

Even if your employer does not offer a formal tuition reimbursement program, you can still present a compelling case
for reimbursement of your educational expenses.

The following four step process will assist you in developing a sound and successful strategy for requesting tuition
reimbursement from your employer.


Step 1: Review your employer’s tuition reimbursement policy

Review your employer’s tuition reimbursement policy BEFORE you request tuition reimbursement.

Tuition reimbursement programs are often based on specific eligibility requirements and criteria determined by the
employer. For example, you may have to work for the company for a designated period of time (or be a full-time
employee) before you become eligible, reimbursement may only apply to classes specifically related to your job,
there may be reimbursement limits, and/or there may be minimum stay requirements after completing your education.

If your company does not offer a tuition reimbursement program, you can still request reimbursement for at least
some, if not all of your tuition expenses.


Step 2: Choose the type of degree or educational development you would like to seek

Choosing a degree or educational program is a very personal and important decision that requires careful
consideration. Once you have selected the type of education you would like to pursue, create a list of ways your
education will benefit you, your employer, and your career.


Step 3: Look at things from your employer’s perspective

     Make a list of concerns your employer may raise and prepare responses for each.
     Emphasize your long-term plans for advancement and commitment to your employer.
     Establish concrete goals and objectives.
     Demonstrate the value of the investment in both quantitative and qualitative terms.
     Choose an educational program that does not interfere with your work schedule.


Step 4: Make an appointment to discuss tuition reimbursement with your employer

        Do your research. Be well prepared with documentation of proposed coursework, costs, benefits, and your
         goals and objectives.
        Be persistent. If you are turned down the first time, understand why and determine what it will take for your
         employer to support your educational development.
        Consider changing or modifying your request. Ask for partial reimbursement rather than full reimbursement.
