The GATORS are a great way to keep in shape during the summer months right here in the
neighborhood. The River Walk swim team is part of the Virginia Beach Swim League (VBSL )
and competes in the Porpoise Division. The Gators have a very limited number of available
openings to non-River Walk residents. If you know of anyone who would like to swim please
contact the Team Reps.
Swim Practice begins the SATURDAY MORNING of Memorial Day Weekend (05/28/11)
SWIM PRACTICE
Practice Requirements: It is recommended that each swimmer make a minimum of three practices per week.
Request for exceptions should be brought to the attention of the Head Coach.
Necessary Equipment: suit, towel, goggles, swim cap, water bottle
Practice Schedule:
First day of practice, Saturday, May 28 AM schedule.
Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 AM schedule
Practice will also be held the mornings of Saturday, June 4 and 11.

PM Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday Evenings (Starting June 2)
10 and under will practice 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
11 and older will practice 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

AM Schedule: Monday thru Friday Mornings (Starting June 21)
11 and older will practice 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
10 and under will practice 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Coaches Clinic 9:30 to 10:00 a.m.
SWIM MEET INFORMATION
(Basic HOME MEET schedule)
* 6:30 a.m. - Concession Set Up
* 7:00 a.m. - Swimmers report to the pool and check in with coaches
* 7:15 - 7:30 a.m. - Warm Ups for the GATORS
* 8:00 a.m. or before - Meet Starts
* There are 69 events. Swimmers will swim a maximum of 3 individual events and 2 relays.
* Each swimmer will receive a ribbon for their event; either a place ribbon or a participation ribbon.
* The meet takes about 4 hours and should be over by 12:30.

If your child is unable to swim in a meet at any time or unable to attend practice, please sign him/her out in the
Meet/Practice book and e-mail or call the Team REP at the phone numbers above or email
riverwalkgators@cox.com
All registration fees must be paid by June 5th. Fees must be paid for swimmers to compete in
meets.
Parent Volunteer Information:
Thanks to you, GATOR PARENTS, we are able to have a smooth and enjoyable swim season. Your
children benefit from all of your hard work and help. At the bottom of this page is the list of all the volunteer
positions needed for each meet.
MEET SET UP & TAKE DOWN: Set up requires approximately an hour of time on the Friday evening
before our home meets. Set up usually begins around 7pm. This entails arranging the chairs around the deck
for the meet, putting up the backstroke flags over the pool, etc. Take down time begins as soon as the swim
meet has concluded, and takes approximately 1 hour. The more people we have the faster we will be
completed.
RUNNERS: We will be required to have 2 runners for our home meets and 1 runner for our away meets.
Runners bring timecards to the scorers during the meet.
CONCESSIONS: Our “GATOR CAFÉ” has been a real success in the past. We are in need of people to fill
time slots for all of the home meets. This is a fun and entertaining opportunity.
CLERK OF COURSE: The Clerk of Course ensures swimmers report to their proper lanes for their events.
TIMERS: Great way to help out the team and see your kids swim. We need 9 timers per meet, but try to get
18 so no one has to do the whole meet.

Disclaimer:
All parents/guardians acknowledge that to participate on the RIVERWALK Swim Team, their child(ren)
must have basic proficiency in water safety and be capable of swimming a minimum of 25 meters (one pool
length) using a forward crawl, or a backward stroke, while using some alternate breathing method. All
children under the age of 10 will be required to demonstrate their ability during the first week of practice
under supervision of the coach.
