9 Year Old Baseball - League

 South Jeffco 9 year old teams compete in the

Jefferson County Junior Baseball League (JCJBL)

 JCJBL consists of teams from all over Jefferson

County, plus Brighton, Louisville, and Broomfield

 JCJBL provides 4 levels of play for 9 year old

baseball

 18 game league schedule

 333 teams – ages 8-14

 Practice begins Mar 1

 Season: Apr 1 – Mid July

9 Year Old Baseball - League

 Levels of Play

– Competitive (a.k.a. Majors or “O” League)

 22% of JCJBL teams, 21% of SJ teams

– First Flight or Level 1

 30% of JCJBL teams, 32% of SJ teams

– Second Flight or Level 2

 36% of JCJBL teams, 45% of SJ teams

– Third Flight or Level 3

 12% of JCJBL teams, 3% of SJ teams

9 Year Old Baseball – Levels of Play

 Majors/”0” League

– Highly competitive traveling teams that

generally play 40+ games per season.

– Teams typically participate in 4-6 tournaments

per season.

– Teams must contain a minimum of 6 players

from a single JCJBL member High School area

 Level 1

– Competitive teams that play 25 – 40 games

per season.

– Teams typically participate in 3-5 tournaments

per season

– Teams divided by High School area

– League usually divided into North/South split

 Level 2

– Recreational teams that generally play 18 –

35 games per season.

– Teams typically participate in 2-4 tournaments

per season.

– Teams divided by High School Area, but

exceptions are possible within SJSA

– Leagues divided into North/South split

– Largest number of teams in JCJBL

 Level 3

– Recreational teams that generally play

between 18 – 25 games.

– Level 3 teams typically participate in 1-3

tournaments per season.

– Teams divided by High School area

– Typically no North/South Split

9 Year Old Baseball – Levels of Play

 All levels receive the same amount of

practice time

 All levels play the same number of league

games

 All levels have State Championship

tournaments

 All levels have the same registration fee

 All levels offer opportunity for an

outstanding youth baseball experience

9 Year Old Baseball Reg. Fees

 Registration Fees for 2010

– Baseball registration fees for 2010 are estimated at

$245 (B.O.D. budget approval in October).

– Fees for 8-14 are the same, regardless of level of play

– A player must register to attend the fall tryout, but

does not need to pay until they have been assigned

to a team.

– If player is selected to a team in the fall tryout, they

will be required to pay $100 by November 11, in

order to hold their roster spot. Balance due in Feb.

2010.

9 Year Old Baseball - Eligibility

 If child is 9 before April 30, 2010, they

should be in 9 year old baseball

 If your child will be 8 on April 30, but in

the 3rd grade, they should strongly

consider 9 year old baseball

 If your child will be 8 on April 30, but in

the 2nd grade, they should play Midget or

8 year old majors baseball

9 Year Old Baseball - Eligibility

 Majors/”O” League

– Players are eligible to attend tryouts for any

areas Majors teams, however, they should

favor their home high school area.

– Majors tryouts include players from multiple

areas

– Recruiting can and will take place at the

majors level.

9 Year Old Baseball - Eligibility

 Levels 1-3 (JCJBL Eligibility Rules)

– Players are only eligible to tryout for teams

within their home High School area

– South Jeffco includes: Chatfield, Columbine,

and Front Range high school areas

– A player’s high school area can be defined by

their area of residence, or the area of the

school the child currently attends

– Where a player says they will eventually

attend high school is not relevant

9 Year Old Baseball - Eligibility

 Levels 1-3 (cont.)

– The penalty for having an ineligible player on a

team’s roster is forfeiture of all league games that

player participates in

– Recruiting between high school areas is a violation of

JCJBL rules

– A player can only obtain a waiver to play in another

high school area, if they cannot be placed on a team

(any level) in their home area.

– That waiver can only be granted by their home area

 Chatfield area schools:

– Coronado, Mortenson, Ute Meadows, Stony Creek,

Bradford, Shaffer, Deer Creek, Falcon Bluffs

 Columbine area schools:

– Leawood, Normandy, Governor's Ranch, Dutch Creek,

Columbine Hills, Ken Caryl Middle School

 Front Range area schools:

– Front Range Christian Academy

9 Year Old Baseball - Tryouts

 9 Majors and Level 1 Tryouts

– Completed in fall (October 18)

– Evaluations done by High School coaches and

Older age group coaches

– Potential coaches will be interviewed prior to

tryouts

– If your player is not selected for a 0 or Level

1 team in October, they will need to return to

tryouts in Jan/Feb in order to be selected for

a Level 2 or Level 3 team.

9 year old Level 2-3 tryouts

 Columbine & Chatfield area players

– Time and location to be determined

– Tryouts held in Jan/Feb

 No tryouts for Front Range team

9 Year Old Baseball - Tryouts

 How to prepare for tryouts

– Practice throwing & hit the batting cages

– Check equipment (glove, batting gloves, bat, heart

guard, cup, etc.)

– Come to tryouts looking like a baseball player

– Wear athletic shoes or cleats

 How to approach tryouts

– Hustle everywhere

– Pay attention

– Don’t goof around

– Have fun!!!

 What evaluators will be looking for

– Throwing mechanics

– Arm Strength

– Speed & Agility

– Hitting mechanics

– Fielding mechanics

– Hustle, effort, attitude

– General athleticism

 Advice for parents

– Relax and let your child have fun

– Don’t put pressure on your child, encourage

them to try their best

– Help your child get prepared

– This may be the first of many tryouts they

attend, help set a positive tone for the

experience

– Do not focus on and place importance on

level of play

9 Year Old Baseball - Coaches

 Head Coach

– All coaches are VOLUNTEERS

– Must apply and interview for position

– Interview conducted by SJ Baseball Directors

– Head Coach will be selected & notified after

tryouts are complete

– Coaches placed according to placement of

their kids and results of coaching interview
