Quakers Start 2010 With A Bang!!
This past Sunday, the Philadelphia Little Quakers Football Team, started their 2010
Campaign with an impressive 38-8 victory over the C.Y.A. Gators, at Plymouth Meeting
H.S. The nationally renowned select team is made up of players from all over the
Delaware Valley and attend a variety of public, private and charter schools.
Both team started sluggishly but the defenses were on their game during the 1st Quarter.
The Quakers’ Andrew Penning (Wissahickon MS) and Ray Jones (Stanton MS, DE) took
turns making stops. The Gators, who earlier had a poor punt, decided to go for it on 4th
down and 6, from their own 34yd line, but they were denied when Travon Williams
tackled their receiver short of the first down.
The Quakers took advantage of the field position by driving 37 yards for a touchdown.
2009 MVP, Phillip Poquie (Haverford School) accounted for 36 of them on 7 carries,
scoring on an 8 yard run as the quarter ended. Brendon Burke (Haverford School) kicked
the extra point (2pt) for an 8-0 lead.
The Gators, based out of Cherashore Recreation Center at 10th Street & Chew Avenue,
are well-know for their speed and they didn’t disappoint. With 4:00 to go in the first half,
#4 hit #1 in stride for a 67 yard touchdown, to make the score 8-6. The extra-point
attempt failed. The Quakers, however, took the kickoff and drove 60 yards in 9 plays.
Fullback, Luke Elentrio (AG Waters, DE), scored from the 1 and Burke’s kick quickly
made it 16-6.
In the second half, the Quakers went 57 yards in 5 plays, this time Fullback Bruce
Smalley (Penn Charter) went up the middle for a 19 yard score. Poquie carried 3 times
for 38 yards on the drive. Burke’s kick made it 24-6 and they never looked back. Later in
the third quarter, Ray Jones took a screen pass from Paul Dooley (Chestnut Hill Ac) and
raced 41 yards for a score. Reggie Carroll (LaBrum MS) ended the scoring in the fourth
quarter, carrying the ball 4 straight times for 27 yards, scoring from 8 yards out.
Phillip Poquie rushed 15 times for 107 yards and caught a pass for 13 yards and Reggie
Carroll rushed for 37 yards on 5 carries. Defensively, Ray Jones had 5 tackles and 2
assists, while also getting pressure on the QB blitz and played great pass defense.
