Dear Delhi Students, February 2010

As you know, SUNY Delhi is part of the State University of New York (SUNY), a 64 campus university system,

governed by the SUNY Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees has mandated that all SUNY schools incorporate

General Education (Gen Ed) requirements into all associate in arts (A.A.), associate in science (A.S.) and

baccalaureate (B.B.A., B.S. or B.T.) degree programs. The ten SUNY Gen Ed categories are: mathematics, natural

sciences, social sciences, American history, western civilization, other world civilizations, humanities, art, foreign

languages, and basic communication.

(If your ultimate educational goal is a certificate, or an associate in applied science (A.A.S.) or an associate in

occupational studies (A.O.S.), then the Gen Ed requirements do not apply to you. However, if your plan is to transfer

to a four year SUNY school, or stay at Delhi for one of our baccalaureate programs, you may be required to meet all

ten Gen Ed requirements before graduating.)

All entering freshmen who plan to earn an associate in arts or associate in science degree from SUNY Delhi, must meet

seven of the ten requirements by the time of your graduation. This requirement also applies to all transfer students

seeking an A.A. or A.S. degree.

All entering freshmen who plan to earn a B.B.A. must meet requirements in all ten of the Gen Ed categories, except for

students seeking a B.B.A. in Veterinary Technology Management who need to meet only six specific Gen Ed categories.

All entering freshmen who plan to earn a B.T. in Architectural Design and Building need to meet requirements in only

eight specific Gen Ed categories. All entering freshmen who plan to earn a B.S.N. need to meet requirements in only six

specific Gen Ed categories. These requirements also apply to all baccalaureate transfer students. See your advisor to

find out which specific Gen Ed categories you need for your degree.

Please remember that in addition to meeting the SUNY Gen Ed requirements, you must also meet SUNY Delhi degree

requirements in order to graduate.

THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE ADDITIONAL COURSES TO GRADUATE, JUST THE

RIGHT COURSES.

It is very important that you meet with your academic advisor early in the semester, and on a regular basis throughout the

year, to plan the courses you will need to complete your degree. Your academic advisor has a list of the courses that

you can take to meet the Gen Ed requirements. Those of you who are continuing your education have already begun the

process of taking courses to meet both Gen Ed and SUNY Delhi requirements. Those of you who are enrolling as

freshmen or transferring from another institution this semester should see your academic advisor as soon as possible to

make sure you are taking the courses you need to complete your degree.

Please remember that while your advisor will be very helpful in guiding you through your curriculum, it is

ultimately your responsibility to make sure that you meet the requirements for graduation.

If you are not sure who your academic advisor is, or if you are not sure in what degree program you are enrolled, or if you

have any questions about your academic life at SUNY Delhi, please call or visit one of the division offices listed on the

following pages.
