JOB DESCRIPTION OF DOCENT OF ART HISTORY AT THE ART
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF THE INSTITUTE OF FINE ARTS
The main competence of Art Department of Tallinn University is to give a profound
knowledge in general education, knowledge and skills in specialty studies on BA level,
carrying out MA art studies, linking contemporary art with art didactics, organizing art events,
supervising BA and MA thesis.
The primary task of Docent of Art History is to develop students’ ability to observe and
impart, to help perceiving integral whole through art theoretical subjects.
One of the purposes of Docent of Art History is helping to develop skills in discussions on
contemporary art, to create prerequisite in fixing knowledge about building up a research
work and about links between contemporary art and art teaching.
Competence of Docent of Art History includes creation of in-service training courses on the
above mentioned themes to Art Teachers.
Candidates must be aknowledged specialists in referred-to specialty. In their portfolio they
should have internationally recognized scientific and development activities, scientific
publications; positive response to specialty work from professionals, experience of giving talk
on conferences and participating in specialty boards. Candidates are expected to have
experience in the field of teaching at the university, be active in developing curriculum.
Candidates must have PhD degree or a degree, equalled to it. Docent of Art History should be
competent to carry out teaching on all levels of higher education (incl. supervising doctoral
studies' students), to supervise BA and MA works on Art Education.
3.Field of Docent of Art History
The field of Docent ofArt History is covering the problems of art history, contemporary art
and art theories. On BA level the field of teaching include contemporary art and recent art

(With full-time work) teaching an average of 224 hours of contact studies annually.
to be active in scientific work.
to supervise BA, MA and PhD works in referred-to specialty.
to examine students according to curriculum.
to teach and plan studies within Art Department and with other departments.
to support students' scientific activities.
to participate in evaluating graduation works.
to participate in administrative work of Art Department.
to plan freely the studies and creative work in the frames of taught specialty,
coordinating them with the needs of fellow teachers and students of Art Department.
to participate on all meetings where Art Department questions are discussed.
to elect or be elected to position in Tallinn University according to regulations.
