51st tico Soldiers finally have barracks of their own

    Since the 51st Translator Interpreter
Company was stood up at the National
Training Center and Fort Irwin in Oc-
tober 2008, its Soldiers have served
the nation all around the globe as they
have provided translator and interpreter
services as a force multiplier for the
armed forces.
However, until May 13, the Soldiers
didn’t have a place to call home at Fort
Irwin as they were moved from modular
facilities to other units’ barracks facilities
but were never together in one place.
With the opening of their new $9
million barracks facility, the TICO
Soldiers now have state-of-the-art living
quarters complete with a kitchen and
living area in each two-person room.
“Our Soldiers have had to move
two or three times, and it’s great they
finally have a place to call their own,”
said TICO first sergeant 1st Sgt.
Jody Huskey.
TICO Soldiers are often deployed to
different theaters around the globe and
until the opening of the new barracks fa-
cility they haven’t had a place they knew
they’d be coming back to, Huskey said.

to worry about moving again.
“I’ve moved two or three times since
I’ve been here, so it’s nice to have a great
place like this to live,” Dikranian said.
“It is one more step on a continuous
effort, a continuous journey to make
Fort Irwin a community of choice,”
Fort Irwin Garrison commander Col.
Jim Chevallier said. “A place known not
only as a world-class training center, but
a world-class place to live, a world-class
place to serve, to deploy from and raise
a family.”
This is a significant step because it is
rare to be cutting the ribbon on a brand
new barracks facility at Fort Irwin and
the National Training Center, Cheval-
lier said.
“It’s a focus that we’ve had for about
18 months to two years and we will
continue to focus on the single Soldier
quality of life that we can help foster here
at Fort Irwin,” he said. “Facilities-wise
we’ve been able to renovate two barracks
this year. We’ve got a new barracks.

Soldiers from the National Training Center
Military Police Company became better pre-
pared to serve the community last week.
The company took part in a daylong capstone
training exercise May 13. Capstone exercises,
which are part of the company’s Law Enforcement
Excellence Program, take place twice a year and
focus on refreshing the MPs’ skills and informing
them of current law enforcement trends. The train-
ing is led by law enforcement officers from more
than a dozen agencies around Southern California
who volunteer their time. Many of the trainers
are also members of the California State Military
Reserve, which performs duties of the National
Guard when the Guard is deployed or unavailable.
“The Soldiers are exposed to law enforce-
ment skills and techniques by some of the most
experienced in the field, and they get to build
relationships with these law enforcement pro-
fessionals,” said Capt. Jason Kim, commander
of the NTC MP Company. “And the trainers

“One of the challenges we have is our MP Company is a
long way from any other law enforcement expertise,” Cheval-
lier said. “Our partnership with outside agencies is key to
maintaining our proficiency.”
Deputy Amy Puzio of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department
volunteered for the fourth time as an MP capstone trainer. She
served as officer in charge for the tactical shooting training.
“I take it as a huge honor to be invited back to help out,”
Puzio said.
The training Puzio helped provide for the MPs is the same
training deputies in her department go through, she said.
Spc. Bladimir Rodriguez said he found one of the biggest
benefits to be the shooting training.
“(Working with the trainers) opens up your mind and gives
you more tools to better help the community,” he said.

Fort Irwin rocked, rolled cheered and sang May 14 when actor Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan
Band visited the post for a concert at Army Field.
The band, named for Sinise’s character in the film “Forrest Gump,” has traveled the world since
2004 playing for the troops and raising awareness of military-related causes. It was their second
visit to Fort Irwin in little more than a year.
“It’s good to be back here,” Sinise said. “We’ve wanted to come back since we played here last
year and I’m glad we were able to put a concert together again this year, because I think it’s impor-
tant. They’re out here in the desert, and I’m sure they can use a little support and entertainment.
It’s important for me to be able to come out and show my appreciation for what our troops do
and what they go through every day.”
The band played a nearly two-hour set that covered a wide variety of artists — everyone from
Jimi Hendrix to Gloria Estefan and the Zac Brown Band were represented.
Sinise said he and his fellow band members try to choose family-friendly songs they think will
      appeal to service members.
“I’m not just here to show off playing cover songs,” he said. “I’m here for them. I want them
      to leave feeling good.”
During the concert, Sinise thanked Fort Irwin’s Soldiers and their families for their service.
“You are the defenders of freedom,” he said. “We want you to know that we care about you.”
Cpl. Jason Steffes, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, attended the concert with
his wife, Shannon, and said he had fun.
“It was great, a nice change from going out to “The Box” all the time,” Steffes said. “It’s really
cool that Gary Sinise does all this for the troops.”
Seven-year-old Nathaniel Leisure, who attended the concert with his dad, Spc. Nathaniel Gary sinise shakes hands with Capt. Zachary Knoebel of the ntC/Fort

Sinise is involved with charitable organizations that work with service members and their families,
and he co-founded Operation International Children, which sends school supplies to children in
Iraq. He said his motivation for helping service members stems from his respect for them.
“As long as they’re out there sacrificing and serving, I think it’s important to show our apprecia-
tion and support,” Sinise said. “We owe them a lot. I know where my freedom comes from — it
comes from people that have sacrificed for it in military service over the years.”
