9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
10
11 TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF
12 TRANSPORTATION ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR
13 SIGNS AT THE INTERSECTION OF UNIVERSAL DRIVE
14 AND SUMTER HIGHWAY AND AT THE INTERSECTION OF
15 UNIVERSAL DRIVE AND BURDELL DRIVE, BOTH IN
16 RICHLAND COUNTY, THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS “IN
17 MEMORY OF MARY L. SHIVERS”.
18
19 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly
20 were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Mary L. Shivers of
21 Richland County on January 10, 2011, at the venerable age of
22 nearly eighty-three; and
23
24 Whereas, born on March 1, 1928, Mrs. Shivers was the beloved
25 wife of the late Clark Shivers for more than fifty years; and
26
27 Whereas, she graduated from Columbia Beauty School in 1963
28 and was a licensed beautician for nearly half a century, as well as a
29 caterer; and
30
31 Whereas, believing in caring involvement in her community, she
32 was active with the Capital View Homeowners Association,
33 Eastern Star, Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Lower
34 Richland Ruritan Club, and Red Hat Society; and
35
36 Whereas, a woman of faith, Mary Shivers was a charter member of
37 Temple Baptist Church, where she was leader of the Temple Rays,
38 Bereavement Committee, and Helping Hands Ministries. One of
39 the greatest joys and fulfillments of her life was involvement in the
40 ministry of Camp Longridge to students, and she used the proceeds
41 from her catering to send underprivileged youth to summer camp
42 there; and
[3764] 1
1
2 Whereas, concern for those less fortunate led her to raise money or
3 gather food for their benefit. She also visited and fed neighborhood
4 shut-ins; and
5
6 Whereas, Mary Shivers was recognized by her church, her
7 community, both the South Carolina House of Representatives and
8 Senate, and Governor Jim Hodges, who in May 2000 awarded her
9 the Order of the Silver Crescent. The Richland County Council
10 also honored her with a resolution in April 2002; and
11
12 Whereas, an iconic figure in many lives, including that of former
13 South Carolina Representative and present House Reading Clerk
14 James “Bubba” Cromer, to whom she was a longtime friend and
15 second mother, Mrs. Shivers will be remembered with much
16 affection and greatly missed in the community she served and
17 loved for so long; and
18
19 Whereas, it is fitting and proper that appropriate markers or signs
20 be erected along Universal Drive in Richland County as a lasting
21 memorial to her rich legacy. Now, therefore,
22
23 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
24 concurring:
25
26 That the members of the General Assembly, request that the
27 Department of Transportation erect appropriate markers or signs at
28 the intersection of Universal Drive and Sumter Highway and at the
29 intersection of Universal Drive and Burdell Drive, both in
30 Richland County, that contain the words “In Memory of Mary L.
31 Shivers”.
32
33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
34 the Department of Transportation.
