Belarusian Arabic alphabet

The Belarusian Arabic alphabet was based on the Arabic Ф, ф F, f ‫ف‬

script and was developed in the 16th century (possibly

15th). It consisted of twenty-eight graphemes, including Ґ, ґ G, g ‫غ‬

several additions to represent Belarusian sounds not Г, г H, h ‫ه‬

found in Arabic.

The Belarusian Arabic alphabet was used by the Lipka Й, й J, j ‫ى‬

Tatars, who had been invited to settle on Belarusian ter- К, к K, k ‫ق‬

ritories. During the 14th–16th centuries they gradually

Л, л Ł, ł ‫ل‬

stopped using their own language and started using the

Old Belarusian language rendered in the Belarusian Ara- М, м M, m ‫م‬

bic alphabet. Books of that literary tradition are known

Н, н N, n ‫ن‬

as Kitab (Belarusian: "Кітаб"), which is the Arabic word

for book. П, п P, p ‫پ‬

Some Polish texts were also written in the Arabic

Р, р R, r ‫ر‬

script, dated not earlier than 17th century.[citation needed]

С, с S, s ‫ص‬

Additional graphemes Ш, ш Š, š ‫ش‬

• For the sounds /ʒ/ (ж), /tʃ/ (ч) and /p/ (п), which Т, т T, t ‫ط‬

are absent from the Arabic language, the following

Ў, ў Ŭŭ ‫و‬

Persian graphemes were used:

‫پچژ‬ В, в Vv ‫و‬

З, з Zz ‫ض‬

• For denoting the soft /dz/ (дз) and /ts/ (ц) sounds,

the following newly-constructed graphemes were Ж, ж Žž ‫ژ‬

used:

ЦЬ, ць Ćć ‫س‬

and ДЗЬ, дзь DŹ, dź

These graphemes were used during the 18th-20th ЛЬ, ль L, l ‫ل‬

centuries.[citation needed]

• The sounds /w/ (ў) and /v/ (в) were both НЬ, нь Ń, ń ‫ن‬

represented by the same symbol: СЬ, сь Ś, ś ‫ث‬

‫و‬

ЗЬ, зь Ź, ź ‫ز‬

ТЬ, ть TJ, tj ‫ت‬

Equivalence chart КЬ, кь KJ, kj ‫ك‬

As only consonants were written, there do not seem to be ’ – ‫ع‬

equivalents for vowels.
