Battle of the Greeks Step Show 2011 Educational Essay Scholarship
2011 Essay Scholarship Award: $500.00 (Non Renewable)

GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. Graduate & undergraduate college student applicants do not have to be Illinois residents.
2. All graduate & undergraduate college student applicants are welcome to apply regardless of their grade level or type of
college he or she attends (university, city college, or trade school).
3. The G.P.A requirement is 2.0 or higher (on a 4 point academic rating scale). A copy of unofficial or official transcript is
needed for G.P.A. verification
4. Community service is not a requirement for eligibility; however, greater consideration is shown for applicants who
demonstrate active service within their community.
5. Recommendations must be received from two (2) individuals familiar with the student’s academic performance and
involvement in school and community service.
6. Based on the information provided on the application and the recommendations received, students will be selected for oral
interviews to be conducted the month of August 2011.
7. The final scholarship selections will be made by the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Scholarship Committee by September

8. Scholarship recipients must perform ten (10) hours of community service.
9. ESSAY: Undergraduate and Graduate applicants have a five (5) part essay question to answer in its entirety. The essay
response must not exceed 5 typed pages.
All application materials are due by Friday July 1 st, 2011 at 11:59pm or needs to be postmarked by Friday
July 1st, 2011. Application, document verification for G.P.A. and an essay response that is no more than 5 typed pages
must be received before your application will be reviewed.
FIVE (5) PART ESSAY QUESTION FOR GRADUATE & UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
For this essay, you need to conduct research to acquaint yourself with beneficial information, statistics, and
action plans against HIV/AIDS. Please think outside the box for questions 3-5, your answers does not have
any boundaries.
1. What is HIV and how can anyone contract it? How many people have been infected with HIV/AIDS in Illinois?
2. What state department(s) and local organizations are involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Illinois? Please list some of
their programs and initiatives.
3. If you was well known or a prominent leader in society (for example: Oprah Winfrey, Lil Wayne, Bill Gates, or President Bill
Clinton) and had 1 trillion dollars, what creative and effective plan(s) would you implement to decrease the incidence of
HIV/AIDS and additional STDs in Illinois? How would you implement those idea(s)?
4. Please give a detail plan on how your idea(s) will effectively help change the mentality and behavior of individuals?
5. How would you allocate your funds? How would you raise more funds to combat HIV/AIDS?
