These are instructions for setting up Dell OptiPlex 745 Windows XP Professional workstations purchased in
2007. However, the same general process is applicable for all workstations using any Division Windows 2000 or
XP image. This document contains the following main sections:

Division images are Netware-ready. When following the procedures outlined in this document, note the following
– indicates the step applies to workstations in a Novell Netware environment.

1. Collect Software: Gather all additional software which will be installed on the computers. (e.g. All the
Right Type, World Book, etc.) Make it available for network installation from Tech logon.
2. Tech Account Login Script: Set the Tech account to use the student account’s login script. The Tech
account is used during setup. It is essential that all network drive and printer mappings be identical to those which
the end users will have.
3. Make Printers List: Make a list of which printer drivers are connected to which ports for which users via
the login script. (E.G. HP LaserJet 2200 – LPT2 – all users; HP DeskJet 692 – LPT3 – students; HP LaserJet 4P –
LPT3 – teachers.) List the printer driver to port assignments on the workstation checklist before printing them out.
NOTE: The UNCs are NOT required during setup. The network location of the printers should be handled exclusively
by login scripts.
4. Download the ftp://tech.wsd1.org/pub/updates/WSD2000XPconfig.exe routine from the shop ftp site.
Save to a share on the apps server which Tech can access when logged on at the workstations.
Print Checklists: If need be, customize the checklist (found at the end of this document) to reflect tasks specific
to the school. Be sure to list the printer driver-to-port mappings and school software which must be installed.
Photocopy or print enough checklists so that there is one for every workstation. Follow the steps in order
systematically, keeping all workstations in the lab at the same step in the procedures. Procedure:
1. Unpack the workstation, monitor, and speakers. Connect all components.
2. CMOS: Power up the workstation, press F2 to access the CMOS, and enter the appropriate password.
Ensure the following settings are correct:
a. System > Boot Sequence: 1. Onboard Network Controller, 2. Onboard SATA Hard Drive (All other items
should also have NO checkmark or number: disable with space bar)
b. Onboard Devices > Integrated NIC > On w/PXE
c. Security > Admin Password: Division standard.
d. Power Management > AC Recovery: Last.
e. POST Behavior > POST hotkeys: Setup.
f. Save Changes and Exit.
3. Mini-Setup: The computer will now boot. A very abbreviated version of Windows setup will run ("Mini-
Setup"). All steps occur automatically. Allow ten minutes for this step to complete.
4. First Log On: After the workstation reboots, log on to the domain as Tech or Local Sysop . During first
logon, a number of steps will occur automatically. The
following steps require user input:
a. Choose the lab type (if applicable). The
same lab image supplied for elementary and junior high
labs can also be used for the econo-lab image. The
differences between these selections involve two titles
of licensed software. If in doubt about the licenses
purchased for a particular lab, contact Education
b. A Word document containing setup
instructions is displayed. Make a note of the revision
date indicated in the document. Close the document
after reading it.

c. The Novell Client Installation begins.
The Printers Control Panel is opened.
5. Novell Netware Components: After closing the Word document, and when OpenManage Client
Instrumentation has finished installing, several additional components must be installed to support the Novell
Netware environment. Follow the instructions on screen, agree to any license agreements presented, and accept all
default settings while the following components run:
a. The Novell Client Installation – Follow on-screen instructions, accept defaults.
d. First Reboot – should occur automatically.
e. The iPrint Client Installation – should run silently following the first reboot.
f. The ZENworks for Desktops Agent Installation – accept the license agreement, accept defaults.
g. Second Reboot – should occur automatically after the Desktop Agent Installation has been successfully
Set Up Printer Drivers. After closing the Word document, and when OpenManage Client Instrumentation has
finished installing, the Printers Control Panel will open automatically. Double-click the "Add Printer" icon, choose
<Local Printer> but do not "Automatically detect".
For each printer:
a. Port: Select the port that the printer is connected to by the login script. Note that ports LPT4 through 9 – if
needed – appear at the bottom of the list, following the COM ports and FILE:. (Tip: To quickly see which LPT
ports are currently mapped at any time, run Tech Use > Command Prompt, and enter "NET USE" at the
b. Make and model: Select the manufacturer and printer. If a message indicates there is already a driver for the
printer, keep the existing driver and continue the installation.
c. Name/default: Leave the default printer name, or change it to a standard name which is the same on all
workstations. (A standard name can be used in the login script to assign the default printer.) Decide whether
this is the default printer.
d. Don't share: Leave the radio button marked beside "Do not share this printer."
e. There is no need to print a test page from every workstation, but it's a good idea to do so from one or two, to
make sure the port mapping and driver are correct. Note that you will not be able to print a test page until after
you join the domain. See step 7 below.
f. Click on <Finish>. The printer should now be listed in the Printer Control Panel window.
g. Custom settings: Go to the properties for the printer and make any necessary changes now. (e.g. default
paper tray, printer memory, etc.)
Important note: Install only "local printers", never "network printers", even though printers are accessed via the
network. Use the logon script to map a suitable LPT port to the network printer, but install the printer driver on the
workstation to a local printer port. Printers installed as network printers are not available to other users!
First logoff or reboot: An Internet Explorer status window indicates the progress of all the initial setup steps.
h. Wait until the status for all steps is "complete" if possible, before logging off or rebooting for the first time.
i. If the IP address of the local NOD32 server takes too long to detect – or if there is no local NOD32 server –
the workstation may be rebooted while the status for the task "Find Local NOD32 version 2 Server" (but only
that task) is still "pending".
j. Complete the next step (6) before rebooting.
6. Set the Computer Name. Right-click "My Computer" and choose Properties, or open the System
Control Panel. Choose an appropriate name for the computer. Reboot when directed. (Note that this step does not
apply to a system which has been re-imaged if it has been registered in the eDirectory tree; in that case, its computer
name and SID will be restored on the first reboot following the installation of the ZENworks Agent.)
5. Join the school's domain. Right-click "My Computer" and choose Properties, or open the System Control
Panel. Enter the name of the school's domain. Enter the username and password for a Domain Admin (like Tech)
when prompted. Reboot when directed. Log on as Tech.

6. Run the WSD2000XPconfig.exe routine. Click on "About". If the version number is newer than that
specified in the Word document, the routine should be run to update the image. This routine will fully update the
workstation to the latest security template, and correct any known problems in the image. Reboot when directed.
No workstation image is ever perfect. Fixes and updates are incorporated into the WSD2000XPconfig.exe configuration
routine, which is frequently updated (always download the current version). Running it during the first time setup
procedure guarantees that all the latest fixes to workstation setup are applied. Note that this routine can be used to
update any Windows 2000 or XP Professional workstation to the current standard configuration.
9. Check NOD32: After rebooting at least once, click the NOD32 icon in the system tray. Click on Update >
Update. Read the server name when the righthand pane opens. If the first logon setup procedure was successful in
identifying a local NOD32 version 2 server (eg. YOURSERVERNAME), the server in the Update Status display
should be identified as YOURSERVERNAME:8081. If the school does have a NOD32 version 2 server and if that
server is not listed in the Update Status display, set the update to the local server. There are two easy ways to make
this change. Do one or the other of the following:
Click Setup; enter the Sysop password; click Servers; click Add; enter http://yourservername:8081; click OK;
choose the new server listing from the server dropdown; click Advanced; click Proxy Server Setup; CLEAR the
checkbox for "Use proxy server"; click OK and OK and OK again until back to the Update Status window; click
Update Now to obtain the update from the local server. If the update was not successful, check the NOD32 event
log to see what the problem is.
Run \\yourservername\nod32v2\setup. This will reinstall NOD32 version 2 from the local NOD32v2 server.
10. (if applicable) Customize the wallpaper. This is not done via the control panel. Instead, run "Change Locked
Wallpaper" or "Change Unlocked Wallpaper" from the Start Menu under Tech Use. Edit or replace the existing files. Any suitable
.BMP files may be used, but they must be saved to the locations specified in the system policy (wsd.bmp and wsdu.bmp in the
<systemroot> folder), which are the files accessed from these shortcuts. Local system policy will undo any attempts to redirect the
wallpaper to a different filename or location, but any bitmap file can serve as custom wallpaper. "Unlocked" wallpaper appears for
all workstation administrators. "Locked" wallpaper appears for all other users.
11. (if applicable) Install additional software. At this point, install all additional software which the school has
purchased for the workstation(s).
a. Always use C:\Program Files. If the software installs to the root of C:\, remember to move the software to C:\Program
Files. (e.g. If the default location for an install was C:\ThisApp, change it to C:\Program Files\ThisApp.)
b. Set the program’s data directory to a folder on D:\. Almost every program saves data to the hard drive, somewhere.
Programs which save to the C: drive must be modified to save to D:, or that data will be lost when the workstation is rebooted.
12. (if additional software was installed) Set up the All Users' Start Menu. If software was installed in the previous
step, special care must now be taken to ensure that the Start Menu shortcuts are installed properly. The most essential rule for
shortcuts is this: Always copy and paste – never cut and paste – shortcuts. See the "Arranging shortcuts" section in "Important
Notes" below for detailed instructions.
13. Set up the default user profile. ( Novell note: Since student accounts use volatile dynamic local profiles, it is
vital that the default profile be set up correctly. If no major software titles have been added, it is not necessary to worry about this.
However, if a program was installed which runs an initial setup or asks some questions of the user the first time they use the
program, that will happen again and again, every time the user logs on. The way to prevent this is to save the software settings in
the default user profile.)
After installing all new software titles, run each of them as Local Sysop and ensure that opening dialogs have been agreed to and
that all settings in the software are set as desired. Then reboot and log on as a different administrative user. Any other
administrative user will do, but that user cannot be one which also uses the Local Sysop profile. Once logged on as the other
administrative user, access the User Profiles applet in the System Control Panel, under Advanced. Select the Local Sysop profile
and choose to copy it to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User. Set "Permitted to Use" to Everyone. Copy the profile. When
copying the profile, you should get a warning dialog indicating you are about to overwrite existing data. If you don't see this dialog,
you are copying it to the wrong place. Also, DON'T copy the profile to the All Users Profile. The All Users Profile is not a true user
profile, and overwriting it with one will delete the Start Menu, and will not achieve the desired results.
14. Create the user profiles. Log off as Tech. Then log on once as Student and as every user who will commonly use
this computer (e.g. Teacher, Sysop, individual accounts).
For each of these users:
a. Set the default printer, and make any required changes to printer settings. For locked users, this is available on the
Start Menu under Programs > Accessories > Printers. (Note: If ALLUSERS.SCR uses the setdefaultprinter command to

perform this action, this step can be skipped.)
b. Customize software as desired for the student user. (Eg. If different default image attributes are preferred in Paint, set
c. Proxy settings in Internet Explorer are stored in each user's profile. If these are not being set via login script, set them
15. Proxy Settings: Internet Explorer proxy settings are preset to proxy.wsd1.org. To customize them for a school,
change them in every user profile, or set them via login script. Mozilla settings are global; changes made for one user will apply to
all users. Note: for more detailed information on using a login script to set MSIE proxy settings, please download the updated
Technical Information documentation from the shop ftp site at ftp://tech.wsd1.org/pub/info/TechInfo.exe.
16. Set the default logon name. Log on one last time as the user who will most frequently use this computer (usually
17. Freeze the workstation. When system is fully prepped, set the system to "boot frozen" and reboot. A group of
computers (e.g. a lab) can be frozen all at once using Deep Freeze Network Control . (N.B. Deep Freeze 5 requires the version
of Deep Freeze Network Control which was updated in 2007. Deep Freeze Network Control may not work in a Novell Netware
network environment. A ZEN application can be used to freeze a group of computers.)
Lock the case with a plastic tie-wrap. New for 2007:
Techs familiar with previous Dell workstation images will notice several changes from earlier images:
1. Computer Name and Domain not set during Mini-Setup: For a number of reasons, Mini-Setup has been
completely automated, now generating a random Computer Name, and setting the workgroup to
WORKGROUP. For systems joining a Windows domain, these two steps must be performed following the
first login setup routine. For systems joining the Novell eDirectory tree, only the Computer Name need be
set. For systems which are being re-imaged, and which already belong to the tree, the step is not required at
all; in those cases, the computer name (and SID and other eDirectory information) is automatically re-
entered into the registry the first time the computer reboots following ZENworks Agent installation.
2. Only Two Division Images: The number of standard images has been reduced from four to two. When the
Division entered into the Merlin Partners Program, the need for a Base image that does not include Microsoft
Office disappeared, so the Base image has been discontinued. When licensing unavailability dictated the
removal of TableTop and TableTop Junior from the Elementary image, it was noted that the number of titles
differing between Elementary and Junior High and Econo-Lab was now sufficiently low as to make a single
unified Lab image worthwhile. Thus, the Econo-Lab image has been discontinued as a separate image.
However, the Lab image includes this package. During first time setup, the technician chooses which lab
package to leave on the workstation: Econo-Lab, Junior High, or Elementary. Choosing the Econo-Lab
option removes KidWorks Deluxe and HyperStudio from the hard drive. The Junior High option removes only
KidWorks Deluxe (plus the menus for Early Years), but leaves HyperStudio installed, which requires a
license. The Elementary option leaves all software installed, and requires licenses for both HyperStudio and
3. More New Components: The Windows XP workstation images contain many, less obvious changes to the
standard configuration. Due to the sheer number of these changes, as well as the sensitive nature of some
of the details, technicians are encouraged to download the updated Technical Information documentation
from the shop ftp site at ftp://tech.wsd1.org/pub/info/TechInfo.exe
Changing Screen Resolution: The shortcut "Set Resolution" (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup\Set Resolution) sets the screen resolution to 1024x768 at logon. The purpose of this
shortcut is to set the display to use the maximum refresh rate supported by the monitor. Reschange queries the
display and monitor drivers and sets the monitor refresh rate to the highest frequency supported. This ensures the
user gets the clearest, most flicker-free display. The higher resolution of 1024x768 has been selected to
accommodate the native mode of the Dell 15" flat-panel monitors which many schools have chosen.

The shortcut included on the image uses the command line: reschange.exe -width=1024 -height=768 -
depth=32 -refresh=0 -quiet This sets the display to 1024 by 768, 32-bit colour, with maximum refresh. If a
different screen resolution is desired, simply edit the command line of the shortcut, or remove it altogether. Note that
reschange.exe can also be incorporated into individual shortcuts to run a specific application at a custom resolution.
For example, reschange.exe -width=800 -height=800 -depth=32 mspaint.exe launches Paint in 800 by 600
If it is desired to have different users use different screen resolutions, remove the shortcut from the All Users Start
Menu, and place customized copies in each individual user's Start Menu.
If the shortcut provided does not provide the desired screen resolution, edit it as required or delete it and set the
Deep Freeze 5: Deep Freeze version 5.7 is pre-installed.
Maintenance Mode: While frozen, the workstation will automatically boot into thawed mode (with keyboard and
mouse disabled) between the hours of 1 am and 6 am). During this period, NOD32 Anti-Virus will automatically
update anti-virus definitions and Automatic Updates will automatically download and install Microsoft Updates. If
additional automatic maintenance work is desired, it should be scheduled for this time period.
Defrag Support: Running Disk Defragmenter on a thawed drive with previous versions of Deep Freeze usually
rendered the workstation un-bootable. Deep Freeze 5 fully supports defragmentation of thawed drives.
Storage Driver Flexibility: Unlike previous versions, Deep Freeze 5 permits the storage driver (i.e. Hard Disk
Controller) to be updated while thawed without disrupting Windows' operation.
Pre-installation: Because it can be pre-installed, the system does not have to be immediately rebooted to freeze and
thaw the drive after the First Logon Setup routine runs. This will normally save two reboots during the initial setup
Netware compatibility: During first time setup, a dialog permits the selection of a Novell Netware environment.
Choosing this option will install the Novell client, the iPrint client, and the ZENWorks for Desktops Agent. System
policies have been modified so that dynamic local users created by Netware will not have system policy restrictions
Microsoft Update: Windows Update has been replaced by Microsoft Update. Because of the way in which Deep
Freeze 5 is configured and installed, systems which are left frozen and powered up overnight (at least some nights)
will automatically receive updates. There is no need to thaw and run Windows Update or Microsoft Update on these
systems in normal use.
NOD32 Anti-Virus version 2.7 is installed. It is set to update automatically from the NOD32 web site, but will
automatically reconfigure itself to use a local NOD32 version 2 server, if one is found in the IP address range .3 to
.39 inclusive in the local subnet. This change is effective following the first reboot.
The USB keyboard provided with current Dell workstations has several hot keys. Unlike previous keyboards, the
hot keys cannot be programmed. Please draw lab facilitators' attention to the volume control knob, which can be
used by students to easily control headphone volume.
The volume control on the speaker does not affect the headphone level.
Arranging shortcuts: When installing additional software, always copy the program shortcut to an appropriate
location on the All Users' Start Menu under Programs, copy the original shortcuts to Tech Use > Originals, and delete
the original shortcuts. This ensures a clean, organized, functional start menu for all users.
a. Open the "All Users" Start Menu by right-clicking on the Start Menu and choosing <Open All Users>.
b. Double-click "Programs".
c. Open the personal Start Menu for the current user by right-clicking on the Start Menu and choosing <Open>.
d. Double-click "Programs" in this menu, as well.
e. In Windows Explorer, open "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Tech Use\Originals".
f. There are now three open windows: "Programs" in the personal start menu, "Programs" in the all users’ start
menu, and the "Tech Use\Originals" folder of the all users’ start menu.
g. Now: (1) backup all new shortcuts to Tech Use > Originals,

(2) copy specific shortcuts to appropriate submenus of "Programs" in the all users’ start menu, and
(3) delete all shortcuts from the personal start menu.
h. Copy all folders containing newly-created icons.
i. Paste them in the Tech Use > Originals window. (This creates a backup copy of the newly-created icons.)
j. Delete the folders containing the newly-created icons from their original location. (The personal start menu
should now be empty. Close that window.)
k. From the Tech Use > Originals window, select the individual icon(s) (not the folders) that locked users (e.g.
l. Copy them.
m. In the All Users’ Start Menu Programs window, double-click the appropriate submenu to contain the
shortcut(s) and paste.
Never cut and paste shortcuts in Windows 2000/XP. Always copy and paste, then delete the original(s). And
always use the All Users’ Start Menu Programs folder. Windows 2000/XP is installed on an NTFS
partition. Because of the way permissions are assigned to profiles, failure to take care in this regard can result
in shortcuts which do not appear or do not work for some users!
"My Documents" is the D: drive! – Many Windows applications are set up to use the "My Documents" folder by
default. For this reason, the workstations are configured so that D: drive is the "My Documents" folder.
Encourage staff and students to use the "My Documents" area for saving working copies of their documents, and
then to back them up to locations on the network, floppy disk, or memory stick.
When installing software: Make sure the application is set to save data to the D: partition by default. There is
no hard and fast rule regarding how the data directory is determined:
Many applications (e.g. Microsoft Office), allow the data directories to be configured directly via Tools >
In some cases (e.g. Student Writing Center), changing the "Start In" property of the Start Menu shortcut to
the desired location will set the data directory.
Lots of programs default to the "My Documents" location for their data. This is ideal, since "My Documents"
is assigned to D:\ on Division workstations.
In other cases (e.g. Eudora), the command line of the shortcut is modified to specify the data directory.
Some programs (e.g. HyperStudio) can only be forced to a new data directory by launching them from a
template document in the desired location.
Programs like Arachnophilia "remember" their last save location, so saving once in the desired location
before freezing will set the directory.
In still others (e.g. StickyNote), the program will only save to the directory it is installed in.
Still others (e.g. EIS) will only save to C: because of the way they are written. Such programs are rare.
Install software to the D: drive only as a last resort, after determining that no other option is available. None
of the pre-installed software on Division Windows 2000 /XP images is installed to D:\. The logon and logoff
scripts which are a part of the image can be used to update data directories. In most cases, even
programs of the last two types noted above can be used with Deep Freeze so long as the data folders are
backed up to and restored from D: using the logon and logoff scripts. See the Technical Information

Scripting Tips: If printers have the same name on all workstations, the SetDefaultPrinter command can be used
in the KiXtart login script to easily change default printers in the future.
Here's an example: A school's lab workstations are named SCHLAB01 to SCHLAB25, and they all have the HP LaserJet 4 printer installed
(with that name), assigned to port LPT2. To map a network printer to that port and make it the default printer in the lab, use the following lines
in the ALLUSERS.SCR file:

setup using a login script. General scripting guidelines are available at ftp://tech.wsd1.org/pub/info/Scripts.html.
Deep Freeze is for everyone! – Deep Freeze is installed on all workstations, both educational and
administrative. After installation, freeze all systems.
C: partition is frozen, but D: partition is not. This means that data saved to C: drive disappears after every reboot,
but data saved to D: (or floppies or memory sticks or additional hard drives or network drives) persist.
Because Deep Freeze prevents permanent changes from being made to the C: drive, operating system and
software errors are much reduced. If software needs to be installed, or other changes made to the operating
system, a technician should be called to thaw the system, make the required changes, and re-freeze it.
Always take Deep Freeze into account when installing software. Make sure permanent data is saved to the D:
No system in general use – educational or administrative – should be left in a thawed state.
This section contains answers to the most frequently-observed problems pertaining to images released
For issues not on this list, the first step in troubleshooting should always be to download and run the
ftp://tech.wsd1.org/pub/updates/WSD2000XPconfig.exe routine. Known problems with all images to date are
automatically fixed by this routine, which is updated constantly as new issues are discovered. This routine can be
run on any Windows 2000 or XP workstation to apply standard Division settings and can be re-run any number of
times. If you discover an issue with the current Division images which you believe should be rectified and added
to the config routine, please contact A/V Computer Repair with details of the issue.
Software settings "reset" or "vanish" – With the deployment of Novell, and the use of volatile dynamic local
profiles for student accounts, a problem frequently observed is the disappearance of software settings saved as a
student user. For example, the SMARTboard software causes a dialog to appear at log on registering the
absence of the hardware. Although there is a checkbox to not show the dialog again, the dialog appears at every
logon. This is because the profile is created anew every time a student user logs on. To rectify this problem,
follow the steps listed earlier in the section "Set up the default user profile". The only software settings that can
be stored on the workstation for users with a volatile dynamic local profile are those in the default profile.
Display problems – screen blank or scrambled - It is unlikely this problem will occur with brand new systems
from Dell. However, when Division images are used with certain "older" monitors, it is possible that an
unsupported video mode may be invoked. If the installed driver does not properly match the monitor, it may allow
a frequency too high for the monitor. When this occurs, the display is scrambled or blank.
There are a number of ways to fix this. (1) If a better monitor is readily available, connect it and reduce the
refresh frequency to one supported by the problem monitor. (2) If not, boot into safe mode and edit the Set
Resolution shortcut in the All Users' Start Menu, under Programs > Startup. A command line of reschange.exe
-width=800 -height=600 -refresh=60 is a safe entry. (3) For techs who occasionally like a little smoke and
mirrors, it is actually possible to fix the screen "live" from within Windows. Even though the screen is scrambled
or blank, Windows is still running. Press the Windows key, then the R key. Although it's not visible, this has
opened a "Run" dialog. Then type the following command (without being able to see it on screen):
reschange.exe -width=800 -height=600 -refresh=60 and press <Enter>. If the command is typed correctly,
the screen will unscramble. If even one character is incorrect, the command fails, however.
Whichever method is used, once Windows is running with a suitable display resolution and refresh rate, use the
Display Control Panel, or QuickResNT in the system tray, to learn the highest supported refresh rate. Change
the command line of the shortcut as required for this new setting, and double-click the shortcut to make sure it
Memory stick doesn't work – If a USB memory stick is inserted during a session and it is not recognized, open
"My Computer" and see what network drives are mapped. If F: (or the next drive letter after the local drives) is
mapped to a network share, disconnect that network connection and try again. Windows XP will assign the next
drive letter after the local drives, regardless of whether it is "available". In order for users to be able to use
memory sticks, ensure login scripts do not map F:.
Unable to bypass proxy – As of 2004, workstation images have additional protection for Division standard proxy
settings which dovetail with proposed changes to the configuration of the Division's proxy servers. To apply these
updated settings to any Windows 2000 or XP Professional workstation, download and run the

ftp://tech.wsd1.org/pub/updates/WSD2000XPconfig.exe routine. To learn more about the whys and wherefores of
the new settings, and to learn how to bypass the proxy in the new setup, download the updated Technical
Information documentation from the shop ftp site at ftp://tech.wsd1.org/pub/info/TechInfo.exe.
Some users (e.g. Student) don't see all installed printers – Always be sure to select the "Local Printer"
option when adding printers to the workstation. Local Printers can be assigned to any port. Network login scripts
map network printers to local ports. Local printers are available to all users. "Network Printers" only create a
persistent connection to a network printer for the user currently logged on. These printers are not accessible by
other users. Do not add printers as "Network Printers".
Can't change the target of "Home" button – Older images included the DellTouch Programmable Keys
application which allowed a high degree of customization for the hot keys of the computer keyboard. The
keyboards supplied since the OptiPlex GX260s do not support this customization.
Can't change restricted settings (e.g. home page) for Student user – Some control panels are restricted
when logged on as a "locked user". All members of Domain Supervised, Domain Office Users, Domain Teachers,
Domain Sysops, and Domain Admins have full administrative access to the workstation. Therefore, if required
changes to the Student profile are restricted, temporarily make Student a member of Domain Supervised in the
school's domain, make the changes while logged on as Student, then remove Student from Domain Supervised.
Another way to make changes to the student profile is to delete the profile, make the desired changes to the
Local Sysop profile and then copy that profile to the default profile, as described in the section "Set up the default
user profile". For information on using login scripts to change "locked user" settings, download the updated

No sound – The Dell OptiPlex workstations have a headphone jack in the front which cuts off the sound to the speaker plugged
into the back. If headphone splitters are in use in the school, be aware that if there is no sound coming from the speakers, to
check the headphone jack.
Peripherals not accessible to Student users – When thawing a workstation, ensure that all peripherals are plugged in before
freezing. Disconnected devices may be removed from the active configuration. If such devices are then reconnected when logged
on as Student, Student is not allowed to update the configuration to add the "new" device. If this happens, thaw the system,
connect the device, log on as an admin user (any red desktop session), confirm the device works under that user and Student, re-
freeze and reboot. This is generally just an issue for unique workstations with such additional devices as scanners and printers,
Login script doesn't run – Unlike Windows 9x, Windows 2000 and XP will
happily log the user on to the domain using cached credentials, completely
transparently. The only clue that this has happened is the absence of the
login script (and all the network drives it maps). If the login script does not
appear to be running, look in the system tray for the network-disconnected
icon (see figure on right).
If that indicator is present, the network cable may be loose, not seated properly, or there may be some other
Computer account not recognized by domain – Network problems occasionally may cause a computer’s
account in the domain to become corrupted. When this happens, domain logon will fail, even though the user
name and password is correct, and the network card is functioning correctly. To remedy this problem, follow this
procedure at the login screen:
a. Click <Options>.
b. Change the <Log On To> entry to "COMPUTERNAME (this computer)".
c. Change <User name> to "Local Sysop".
d. Enter the standard Division password for Sysop.
e. If a "First Time Setup is not complete." error appears: click <OK>.
f. If the system is frozen, access Deep Freeze, click <Boot Thawed>, and reboot the workstation. Then re-
start this procedure at step "a" above.
g. Right-click "My Computer" and select <Properties>.
h. Choose the Network Identification tab and click <Properties>.
i. Click the radio button for "Member of <Workgroup>" and enter the domain name there. Click <OK>, and
a moment later, <OK> again. And again. Don’t exit yet.
j. Click on Network Identification > Properties again. Click the radio button for "Member of <Domain>" and
enter the domain name there. Enter the Tech user name and password when prompted. Click <OK>,
and a moment later, <OK> again. And again. Then click <OK> to close the Network Identification applet.
k. A System Settings Change dialog appears, prompting a reboot. Click <Yes> to reboot.

l. After rebooting, change the login screen’s <Options> to again log on to the domain and click the
<Options> button to hide the domain name.
Reinstalled NOD32 and now the network doesn't work – If NOD32 version 2 is reinstalled on a workstation
with an older version of the NOD32 installer program, network connectivity maybe disabled. Make sure the local
NOD32 server has the current versions of all installers available on the NOD32V2 share. Download
ftp://tech.wsd1.org/pub/programs/nod32-wsd1.exe and run it on the NOD32 server. There is no need to run the
full installation. Simply choose the update option. This will copy the latest versions of the NOD32 installation
programs to the NOD32V2 share. If a workstation has been reinstalled from an older version and now has
network connectivity problems, uninstall NOD32 to restore the network, and reinstall NOD32 from the updated
Installed new software and it doesn't work – Division images make use of a variety of customized security,
policy and permissions settings which permit a wider array of software to work for all users than is the case with a
generic install of Windows. The Windows XP images are built on a new template which provides even better
compatibility settings than were included in the original Windows 2000 images.
The security configuration template relaxes NTFS permissions and registry permissions to permit more legacy
software to run. Some software installers (eg. Cogitum Co-Citer and Co-Tracker) actually write the restrictive
permissions during installation! Rerunning the security template afterwards, or manually changing the file
permissions fixes this problem.
To install the current version of updated security and policy settings for either Windows 2000 or XP Professional
workstations, download and run ftp://tech.wsd1.org/pub/updates/WSD2000XPconfig.exe.
Windows XP also has a variety of compatibility mode options which can assist in running legacy
software.Checklist – Computer Name:
