Dear Southgate Band Parents:
I have recently had the opportunity to attend a band booster meeting and I was a bit troubled by what I saw and
heard. I have not been able to attend meetings recently because my college classes meet on Wednesday evenings.
After much thought and consideration I would like to take some of this newsletter to remind all of us what the
band program here in Southgate is all about.
Our primary goal as an organization is to provide positive, meaningful, musical and social experiences for our
students. We want students to learn about music and have a terrific time doing it. We all work hard to make
sure that we have good instruments, great staff, upper caliber show designers, and other tangible things to help
our students be successful. This is all wonderful. I think we need to work just as hard to develop positive
relationships with our students and each other.
I have always been impressed with the parents here in Southgate. I communicate regularly with other band
directors about how terrific you all are. I am proud to say that I work with a group of parents who are
motivated and passionate about helping our program. I have parents that work so hard and give endless
amounts of time and energy to our program. Not all band directors can brag about that. Many programs have
few parents involved, and are hard pressed to get even simple tasks accomplished. We have veteran parents in
charge of a very active booster group. We are truly blessed here in Southgate.
With that being said we need to refocus our energy where it needs to be. We need to focus on the entire
Southgate band program, not just a small part of it. We need to help each other and build each other up instead
of focusing on negative things. We need to support the parents that were elected to lead our organization and
avoid petty squabbling. We all need to realize that each and every parent is important to our success as an
organization. Very little can be accomplished by arguments and political agendas. If we want to accomplish
great things it will only be as a team pushing in one direction together. Offer advice and criticism, but do it in a
way that is positive and supportive. It is tough for me to see such division in our parent group because it goes
against everything that our group should be about….positive relationships.
So why is it again that we do all this work and give all this time and money? I think it is because we want our
students to be part of an organization that can help them grow as musicians and people. So everybody can be
proud of our organization. I still think that the people part needs to come first…with the students and the parent
volunteers! Hopefully I’ll be able to keep bragging about our fantastic parent group for years to come.
Sincerely,
Toby Kmet
