Scene: Buffy, Willow, and Dawn are walking down the main street eating
ice cream. It‘s the first night in a while that Buffy hasn't had to go
slaying, so she wanted to take that chance to hang with the gang.
Camera closes in on the three girls.
Dawn: It's so much fun when you don‘t have to work Buffy. I wish it was
like this all the time.
Buffy: Well....it can‘t Dawny. You know....sacred duty..blah
blah....your destiny calls...blah blah. (sticks bottom lip out)
Willow: (taps Dawn on the arm) But...you know...you have your sister
all through the day....well almost.....and maybe sometime you could go
patrolling with her. (smiles)
Buffy: (glares at Willow) NO...she cannot!! N..O..never! I‘ve talked
about this before.
Willow: It was only a suggestion...no biggy.
Dawn: This is so unfair! Why never? I‘m almost 16 now! I can handle
it...I‘ve seen Blade!
Buffy: (stops) why is this topic the only thing we argue about Dawn?
you know what my answer is all the time!
Dawn: (starts to get a little frustrated) I'm not a kid anymore Buffy,
I‘m...
Willow: (interrupts) OK OK!!!! We just need to calm down here! (turns
to Buffy) I‘m sorry. I brought it up! I didn‘t know it'd cause an
argument. Just...don‘t get frustrated with Dawn about it! I was trying
to liven up the night!
The three of them stand still for a moment with a small glance every
now and then.
Buffy: Sorry Dawn.
Dawn: (smiles at Buffy) It's ok. I get snappy too. So does the rest of
Sunnydale.
Buffy and Dawn hug. Willow claps her hands once, with a big grin on her
face.
Willow: There....isn't it so much more fun when we're all friends?
happy..friends?
Buffy: (laughs a little) Still happy over here. Don‘t freak Will. I‘m
probably just not used to a quiet night......
Out of nowhere, a vampire jumps out of the bushes (tense music starts
up) and knocks Willow and Dawn to the ground, then turns to Buffy.
Before the vamp knows it, Buffy pulled out her stake and gave it a new
resting place. That vamp is all dusted and rotting in hell. Buffy helps
Willow and Dawn back up to their feet.
Dawn:........What were you saying?
Buffy: humph
The three walk away in the distance. Credits.

Scene: Magic Box interior.
Xander and Anya are at the counter taking inventory. Again. Xander
is becoming exasperated.
Dawn is sitting over at the round table doing her homework. Every now
and then she casts a glance in the couple's direction.
Xander: An, what does it matter if a few small things are missing?
You have to expect that when you run a store. People pick things up
and walk out with them.
Anya: but each item that `walks' robs me of my profit. Profit I work
hard for! And we need all the profit we can get to afford the
wedding I'm planning.
Anya's frown turns to a small smile as she thinks of the wedding.
Xander looks aghast. Both are momentarily caught up in their own
thoughts.
Anya shakes her head and returns to the present.
Anya: It's a question of mutual trust. I trust my customers will pay
for what they want and they trust me to stock what they need.
Xander: Okay,An.
Dawn has been gazing intently at the text in front of her.
The door bell rings and Buffy walks in wearing her Doublemeat Palace
uniform and looking tired. She walks towards Xander and puts a burger
in the counter in front of him. He promptly unwraps it and begins
eating.
Buffy: Dawn, how was school?
Dawn: there.
Buffy: well you can finish your homework at home. Come on get your
stuff. Thanks for looking after her.
Buffy directs this at Xander and Anya. Dawn throws her a disgusted
look.
Buffy: Dawn you ready?
Dawn: Guess so. See you guys later.
Scene changes to the exterior of the Summer's house. We see Dawn and
Buffy walking towards the camera. Dawn has her head down.
Dawn: Why don't you care about my feelings?
Buffy: What are you talking about? Of course I care about your
feelings.
Dawn: people only say `of course' like that when they don't really
even want to think about it.
Buffy stops and looks hard at Dawn but Dawn just keeps walking. She
starts to say something but her feelings overcome her and she sobs
and runs into the house.
Buffy looks after her.
Buffy: where did that come from?
Buffy continues up the path and into the house.
Scene: Dawn's Room.
Dawn is standing by the window gazing out. She is a sad figure. She
rests her head against the window frame and a tear rolls down her
cheek.
Dawn: I wish Mom was here to help me.

Scene: Kitchen, Summers home after dinner that evening. Buffy and
Dawn are standing at the counter doing dishes. Buffy‘s washing and
Dawn‘s drying (if it matters). They‘re not talking and the silence
seems strained. The phone rings.
Dawn: Hello? Oh, hi Xander . . . no, just doing dishes and homework,
that‘s my lot in life. (with the sarcasm only possible to a 15 year
old girl)
A short pause, and Dawn suddenly has an excited expression on her face.
Dawn: I‘d love to! That would be so cool. Just a sec . . . (aside to
Buffy) They want me to watch the store for a couple hours tomorrow
afternoon. Something about paperwork gone wrong for the wedding
licence, or . . . something. (back to the phone) Great, I‘ll see you at
two tomorrow. (hangs up, smiling)
Buffy: You can‘t. You‘ve got school.
Dawn: Geez, Buffy, don‘t you ever listen to me? Tomorrow‘s early
dismissal day anyway, because of the staff meeting. I told you last
week.
Buffy: Well, okay. But it‘s a lot of responsibility. Are you sure –
Dawn: (with an exasperated look) I‘m practically sixteen. Lots of
people have jobs in shops when they‘re sixteen. Anyway, it sure beats
working in some burger dive. (Buffy looks hurt, but Dawn is oblivious)
Besides, who else can they get on such short notice, Willow? Not
likely. Lighten up, Buffy. It‘ll be great experience, and it‘s only
for a couple hours anyway.
Scene changes to the Magic Box, next day in the afternoon. Anya is
dithering about behind the counter, showing Dawn various procedures.
Xander paces impatiently.
Anya: And the pink slip from the credit card goes in this drawer.
Now, if they want to use a cheque, they have to have a driver‘s licence
and a credit card. But you should really encourage everyone to use
cash, because--
Xander: An, we have to get going. The office closes in an hour.
Anya: This is important! Special orders are filed in the binder over
here (indicates a binder on the desk by the phone), unless they‘re one
of the regular customers, then the forms are here (tray on the back
counter), and the white part goes --
Xander: An, hon? They won‘t let us get married if we can‘t straighten
out this problem with the licence.
Anya: (looks up in sudden comprehension, then over at Dawn) We‘ll be
back within two hours. Oh! Don‘t forget that every purchase over
twenty-five dollars receives a free pair of chicken feet!
Dawn: Piece of cake.
Anya: No! No eating in the store! Crumbs could get into the cash
register. What if it stopped working?
Dawn: (laughs) I meant that it‘ll be easy. If there‘s anything I
can‘t handle, I‘ll tell them you‘ll be back soon. I‘m sure I can
manage for just a couple hours.
Anya: (Heads for the door with Xander. Sees a customer coming in.)
Welcome to the Magic Box. I‘m sure we‘ll be able to supply you with
what you need. We have highly trained staff.
Xander: Who are capable of being left without supervision. Let‘s go.
(they finally get out the door)
Cut to view from outside the shop through the window (Anya‘s POV): Dawn
smiles, and although looking a little nervous, successfully completes
the transaction (and doesn‘t even forget the chicken feet)
Cut to view Magic Box interior: Instrumental music plays as we follow
Dawn in a montage of scenes in the store - straightening shelves,
serving assorted customers, looking with one eyebrow raised at a bundle
of twisted twigs tied with a green ribbon . . .
Later, we see Dawn leaning her chin in her hand, elbow on the counter,
looking bored. She looks around the store, and seeing no one, wanders
about opening storage drawers where more important items are kept.
Despite Anya‘s compulsive tidying and cataloguing, there are still
drawers jumbled with amulets, tokens, scraps of parchment etc. Dawn
finds a silver ring set with a large, faceted green stone and, checking
to make sure no one is around, slips it into one pocket.
[Note to future writers – how much would you like to bet that this ring
and some other assorted items (possibly already in Dawn‘s possession)
are part of what‘s needed to defeat Singultus? I wouldn‘t bet against
it. *g* Fecal matter‘s gonna hit the air circulation device soon, you
bet!]
We finally see Dawn sitting behind the counter, looking at a slim,
dusty, leather bound volume. Camera circles around to a POV over her
shoulder and we see it‘s a spellbook, and the title on the page she‘s
looking at is ―Talking to the Dead.‖

INT: Magic Box – Same Day
Scene: Dawn is behind the counter looking extremely bored and playing
with her chewing gum. The doorbells chime and in walks Janice (Dawn‘s
friend from ―All The Way‖).
Janice: Hey there Summers, look at you, all ‗General Retaily‘ like.
Dawn: (suddenly perking up) Yup. I‘m my own boss. I have the right to
refuse service to anyone (jokingly does a sinister laugh).
They both giggle.
Janice: So how much longer are you gonna be chained behind the counter?
Dawn: (shrugs) Not long. Xander and Anya should be returning soon.
Janice: So, everything‘s set for tonight?
Dawn: Check. It‘s a go. I had to promise my sister I‘d be home for
dinner first. She wants to stuff me full of starchy tidbits before she
allows me out of her sight for the night.
Janice: (rubbing palms together excitedly) It‘s gonna be so cool. I dug
the Ouija board out of the attic. I can‘t wait to start contacting some
evil dead.
Dawn: (anxiously) We‘re still gonna try to do what we talked about,
right? I-I mean it‘s not gonna just be about the evil dead.
Janice: Yeah. Sure. Are you—uh---scared?
Dawn reaches below the counter and pulls up her backpack.
Dawn: If I were scared--I wouldn‘t have this (She shows Janice the
spell book, then opens it to the ―Talking to the Dead‖ page. As the
camera closes in we see it's bookmarked by a picture of Joyce.)
Janice: Woah! Is that the real deal?
(Dawn nods and Janice smiles)
Janice: (saucer-eyed) Hello psychic-fest!
END SCENE
EXT. Sunnydale CA. – Early Evening.
Scene: Camera POV : Above the city looking down towards the park and
it‘s surrounding area. As the camera closes in we see the park is
nearly empty. There‘s so little traffic that there‘s no one around to
point the finger at the two vampires that are presently dragging a limp
and beaten body thru a winding path beneath the trees.
Cross fade to: Inside a large dank cavernous dwelling, illuminated by a
vast array of candles. Singultus sits in the shadows, watching, as the
two vamps deposit the battered male at his feet.
Vamp Minion #1: Master… we brought you the one you asked for.
Singultus: What about the ring?
Vamp Minion #1: According to Willy‘s informant the ring was purchased
from it‘s original owner on Ebay by the Magic Box. We weren‘t able to
go inside and get it--
Vamp Minion #2: (finishing) – the shop had an evening rush crowd- (at
Singultus‘ scowl) you told us to be inconspicuous.
Singultus: And William?
Vamp Minion #2: It wasn‘t just a fluke that the Slayer & her friends
showed up at his crypt that night, Sire. Apparently Spike has been
working side by side with her for quite some time now.
Singultus: (disbelieving) William… aiding a slayer? Hell has finally
frozen over.
As he absorbs the information the vamps are giving him, he bends down
and carefully inspects the now conscious male at his feet. Singultus is
infuriated as he realizes he is not the one he wanted.
Singultus: (standing) You bloody imbeciles! This is not the one I asked
you for! I sent you on a simple task—bring me the least threatening
member of the Slayer‘s little Monster Bashing Squad, and you bring me
this…this …worthless sod!
Vamp Minion #2: But Master-
Vamp Minion #1: (finishing) - he fit the description. He was found
outside the Magic Box--just like you said.
Singultus: Idiots!. Do you think every male with dark hair and eyes,
found in close proximity to that bloody store is Xander Harris?!
Turning away from the cowering vampires and glaring at the battered
male, Singultus drags him out of the shadows, revealing to the camera
that it‘s Warren.
Singultus: (repeatedly tapping a black rattle against his open palm)
Normally I‘d spend the better part of the night torturing you.
Indulging myself in the exquisite pleasure of causing you unbelievable
pain and anguish. (sighs) But, tonight I have more pressing matters.
Warren: (Looking clearly relieved but having a hard time getting words
past his swollen lips) I-I c-can‘t tell you how much I appreciate that.
I‘ll just crawl on home now.
Singultus: (Smirking) I said I was too busy to torture you. I never
said I wasn‘t feeling peckish.
Warren: P-peckish? Y-y-you don‘t wanna eat me-
Singultus: Eat you? No. (pause) I only want your blood.
Warren: W-wait! I can help you.
Singultus: (laughing) How could you possibly be of any help to me?
Warren: (desperate) I know everything there is to know about the
Slayer. I-I‘m practically her arch-nemesis. I can help you get her.

Scene- Summers' house. Dawn is upstairs getting things ready for the
night. Buffy and Willow are down at the table talking.
Buffy: "I don't know willow, she's been acting so different lately,
like she hates me. What do you think, why has she been acting that
way?"
Willow: "Well, you know it's been really hard for her this year with
your mom and you dieing. You got to come back so like why not
mom? What helps you deal? What makes you feel alive?"
Buffy smiles a sad smile, "Oh, will. if you only knew.
Willow: "It's spike huh?"
Buffy: (with a look of surprise and shock) Willow, I umm, I... you see
Spike and I..umm
Just then Dawn runs down the stairs and out the door.
Cut to the dark graveyard, we see Dawn and Janice sitting on the
ground by Joyce's grave reading the book. Dawn has tears running down
her face as she reads the word out loud.
Just then a blue light glows from the book, both girls get chills
and sit straight up, the graveyard gets colder and darker than
before. We hear a really creepy sound and it is coming from the
grave.
Dawn: "Mom, is that you? It's me Dawn, are you there?
"Dawn? Little bit?" asks Spike as he is walking up from behind
her, he had heard the sound also and went out with his game face on
ready for a fight. "What are you doing here? What have you done this
time"
Janice sees spike, game face disappearing, and runs away fast!!
Dawn: "Oh, Spike, it's just you, I haven't done anything, not really.
You see I just miss her so much and I can't talk to Buffy about it,
she hates me and there is no one who understands how much it hurts me
for her to be gone. No one knows?
Spike: "Well, I do. I've been there too and it seems we have tried
this before, it didn't work then why would it now. You're inviting
all kinds of evil into your life when you try this kind of magic,
just ask Red. She knows more about evil than any of you will ever
know. Now put that away and lets get you home-something is wrong out
here. Doesn't feel right."
Dawn: Looking up at him with tears in her eyes still- "Yeah, I forgot
what you went thro when Buffy died. You were a real wreck. Lets go,
it didn't work and this place is really wigging me out, I don't know
how you and Buffy can go around and around out here all night long."
Spike has a sly smile on his face thinking about the "going around"
he and Buffy do out here, as he helps her up.
Just then the blue light lights up the grave and all of a sudden we
hear "Dawn? Spike?" it was Joyce's voice from the grave.
Dawn: "Oh mom, is that you? Is it really you? It‘s me Dawn, I just had
to talk to you one more time. I am so lost and Buffy hates me
and...."
Joyce (in a very rushed and worried voice): "Dawn, stop I can't stay
long. Buffy does love you and she needs you. Now mostly there are
changes coming that you have no idea about and you have to be the
strong one, Buffy will need you, so grow up honey and be ready. I
love you and will see you again someday (in a whisper she
adds "soon"). Now honey I only have a little time, go home and talk
to Buffy-really talk to her. I love you. Spike-you stay here, We need
to talk.
We see Dawn running out of the graveyard and back home.
Joyce: " Spike, do you really love Buffy or is this a game you are
playing to get close to her? I feel that she loves you in her own way
and Well, William says that you must really love her or you would
have been long gone by now"
"WILLIAM" shouts spike, his game face on and totally pissed."what
does he know, he is nothing and is gone and what I feel....."
"Spike, stop" says Joyce in an even more rushed tone." We don't have
time for this, I know now that you do love her, I just needed to feel
the real you for a minute to feel the love. Now listen to me there‘s
not much time, Buffy needs you, you're the only one that can help her
thro what is coming and you're the only one Dawn trusts. Go- work
with them, get them ready. You see he's not really gone he's just
waiting till........"
At that moment a loud bang is heard and the blue light shoots out of
the grave and into the sky.
Cut to Singultus's cave
Singultus: "What a silly little git, did she really think she had
that much power yet.
The blue light is shinning in his eyes, we now know that he was the
one who called upon Joyce for Dawn to talk to. He had heard
everything that was said.
Singultus: "so not only is "William" helping the slayer- he loves her
and she loves him also. This could be very interesting indeed.

Scene: Singultus' cave. Warren is cowering a corner. Singultus
enters and stares at him.
Singultus: And just what can you do for me? What knowledge do you
possess that could stop me from twisting your head off your neck?
Warren: Ah, uh, well, my associates and I have certain
magics...powers...we could put in your service.
Singultus: Such as?
Warren: Jonathon, short little guy...but he can do glamours like no
one else. He can make himself look like anyone.
Singultus: (getting an evil idea) And can this...Jonathon...put
this type of glamour on someone else?
Warren: I don't know...(Singultus grabs Warren by the neck) Yes!
Yes he can!
Singultus: You might have just saved your life...for now. Bring me
this Jonathon. Quickly. (Squeezes Warren's neck, lifting him off the
ground.) Don't disappoint me. (Turning to his minions.) You. Get
to the magic shop. Find that ring. No excuses, unless you enjoy
burning alive. And you...escort this sorry excuse for a man to this
Jonathon. I want you all back here in one hour. (Minions and Warren
exit the cave.)
Scene: later that night at the Summers' home. Spike and Buffy are
sitting on the back porch.
Buffy: I can't believe she tried to talk to Mom...
Spike: Not try, luv. Did. Something big is gearing up; I don't
think Joyce could have come through so easily unless she was really
worried...spirit contact is a two way street.
Buffy: (sighing) Doesn't it ever let up? Why can't I have one week
that my biggest problem is getting grease stains out of my uniform?
Spike: Have you tried pouring detergent directly on the stain,
rubbing it in and letting it set for a few minutes before washing?
Buffy: How do you know so much about it?
Spike: I may be the evil undead, pet, but it doesn't mean I'm a
slob. Like to be nice and tidy, I do.
Buffy: (trying to suppress a smile, but failing) You are just full
of surprises. It's driving me crazy waiting for this Singultus guy
to make his move. I want to get rid of him before Xander and Anya's
wedding.
Spike: Now there's a union made in hell.
Buffy: Be nice. You have no idea how much I envy them...
Spike: What? Want the whole middle class bourgeois trip, do you?
Well, I tell you what love. We'll buy a little cottage right next
door to Harris. We'll do backyard bar-b-ques on Sunday evenings.
Guess we can't have our own little tykes, but we can be god-parents
to theirs. Do the little league thing, play bridge one night a
week...
Buffy: (laughing in spite of herself, and completing the fantasy)
We'll buy an SUV, black of course, you'll get a night job,
telemarketing maybe? Then we can take a nice vacation once a year...
(her laughter turns bitter. There is a long silence)
Buffy: There's not going to be any backyard bar-b-ques for me, huh?
No little league, no bridge club, no vacation...
Spike: (his voice intense) That's right, pet. You get none of
those things. You never will. You are the Slayer. (He leans in
closer, slipping his hand between her legs then whispers in her ear)
But you can have this...(Buffy closes her eyes, lost to the
moment)
The erotic moment is interrupted by a scream. Buffy is up and
running into the house, confronting Dawn who is trying to run out of
the front door.
Buffy: (grabbing Dawn by the arm) What? What is it?
Dawn (almost hysterical) Buffy, let me go. It's her. I saw her from
my window. She needs me!
Buffy: Who? (Shaking Dawn for an answer) Dawn, who!
Dawn: Mom!

Continuing strait on from Momkat.
Buffy and Dawn are stood in the interior of the Summers house by the
closed front door.
Spike is stood a few feet behind them.
BUFFY: (Looking shocked) Dawn, what did you do?
DAWN: Nothing Buffy, I didn't do anything.
BUFFY: Did you try to raise her again?
There is a loud knock at the door that makes the girls jump.
DAWN: Mom
Dawn pushes Buffy aside and flings the door open. There is nothing
there. Dawn walks out of the front door onto the porch looks down
the steps and a woman can be seen in the shadows.
DAWN: Mom, its you.
The woman walks out of the shadows and reveals herself to be Joyce.
JOYCE: Dawn
DAWN: Mom, I missed you so much. (Tears rolling down her cheeks)
Joyce walks up the stairs and is stood on the porch were Dawn hugs
her.
DAWN: Its really you.
Buffy is still inside the house stood frozen with tears brimming in
her eyes.
JOYCE: (Looking at her) Buffy.
BUFFY: Mom (Said like she still cant believe this is happening)
Buffy walks slowly closer to the front door and stops, tears run
down her cheeks. The Camera moves to Spike who is looking intently
at Joyce. The camera zooms slowly in on his eyes and he stays
intently watching.
SPIKE: (Said quietly) Joyce when did you come back?
JOYCE: Just now, I can't remember where I was but I just woke up
in my coffin. It was horrible, but it's OK now. (Joyce looks at the
girls)
The camera moves back to Spike. You can faintly hear Dawn saying
something to her mother but Spike is now looking at Joyce's hand.
They are clean. Then he looks at Buffy‘s hand were faint scars can
still be seen from when she had to claw her way out of her coffin.
SPIKE: (Looks at Buffy) Don't say a word!
Spike walks out of the front door behind Joyce and violently throws
her into the threshold of the front door. Joyce bounces off thin air
(Just like a vampire does). Spike's game face comes on.
SPIKE: Well, Well, Well.
Buffy and Dawn stare at what looks like their mother. She begins to
shake then morphs into Singultus. Spike quickly reaches into his
pocket and pulls out a stake and sticks it into his chest. As
before, nothing happened.
SPIKE: Why don't you just die?
Singultus produces a metal stake, about 2 feet long from the inside
of his jacket and thrusts it hard into Spikes shoulder. It goes
through and pins him against the wall of the house.
SINGULTUS: (Looking at Spike with a cruel smile) Spike, You are as
pathetic as your poetry.
Buffy then runs out of the house to attack him but he is to fast for
her and kicks her solidly in the chest. She is thrown back into the
house and her head impacts into the stair rail. She falls back onto
the floor unconscious. Singultus grabs hold of Dawn who is still
stood there shocked. He wraps one of his hands around her neck and
looks at Spike.
SINGULTUS: Spike, I'll just take your little precious here for a
quick run around the block. (Sarcastically) You don't mind do you?
Spike struggles even harder now growling as Singultus turns away and
calmly pulls the screaming Dawn down the street.
DAWN: (Screaming) SPIKE, HELP ME! BUFFY!
But Spike can't get free.
SPIKE: (A look of failure on his face) Not again.
END SCENE
Interior of Buffy‘s house about two hours later. Xander, Anya, Dawn,
Spike and Willow are stood around the unconscious Buffy. She starts

Scene: Singultus' cave. Dawn is chained to a wall and is
unconscious. Singultus is sitting in an ornate armchair surrounded
by minions.
Dawn slowly wakes up and starts when she realizes where she is.
Singultus: Well, my sweet little bird. Sleep well?
He walks over to Dawn and gently traces her jaw line to her neck.
Singultus: My my. You are a pretty little thing.
Dawn: (glaring) My sister is gonna be so pissed when she finds out.
Just wait. Buffy and Spike are going to come for me and you'll so be
a pile of dust.
Singultus chuckles, a deep, low vibration in his chest. The
vampire's eyes darken as he grips Dawn by her hair.
Singultus: That's just what I was hoping for, my bird. I'll have
the two things William loves, you and the Slayer. (turning towards a
minion) Fetch me that Jonathon. I just might have more use for him.
He brings a black rattle to her cheek and chuckles.
End Scene
Back at Buffy's house. Xander, Anya, Willow, and Spike are sitting
in the living room. Willow is bandaging Spike's shoulder while Buffy
is frantically pacing.
Buffy: (wringing her hands) Ok. So do we have any idea where this
Singultus guy is lurking?
Willow: Aah, do you think we should check big mansions and stuff? I
mean, he kinda has the whole Dracula thing going on.
Buffy's cheeks turn pink at the mention of him and she glances at
Spike. Spike cocks his head to one side in curiosity.
Spike: (turning towards Willow) Nah. This bugger will be in the
typical lair, probably surrounded by stupid ponces for minions,
candles and all that mush. It's just a matter of findin' the bloke
and me rippin' his head off.
Buffy: (pacing even faster) So here's the deal. Xander, Anya, and
Willow. I want you to research every possible way I might be able to
kick this vampire's ass. Spike says he has a powerful dark aura
protecting him. Find out how to break it. Spike. (she looks at him
and places her hands on her hips) You and I will find his lair.
The Scoobies get up to leave for the Magic Shop. Xander pauses at
the front door and gently lays a hand on Buffy's arm.
Xander: It'll be all right, Buff.
Buffy: (with a slight smile) I know. Thanks.
Xander leaves with Anya draped on his arm, followed by Willow who
gives Buffy an understanding smile as she leaves.
With a sigh, Buffy walks outside to where Dawn had been taken by
Singultus. She wraps her arms around her shivering body and murmurs
her sister's name.
Spike: Buffy
Buffy turns around to see her reliable vampire.
Buffy: I can't loose her, Spike.
Spike can see the familiar look of anger and death that is the Slayer
flash in her eyes. He grasps her arms.
Spike: (looking into her eyes) We'll find her, luv. I swear on my
unlife.
Buffy: (tears rising) There's so much I have to tell her, let her in
on. I need to repair the bridge separating us.
Spike: (gathering her into his arms) Everything will be all right,
pet. I'll not let that bleedin' bastard so much as hurt a hair on
the Niblet's head.
Buffy sighs, enjoying the comfort that is Spike, and glances at the
stairs. Something shiny catches her eye and she pulls away from
Spike to investigate.
Buffy: (picking up the object) What's this?
Buffy holds out her hand revealing a silver ring with a large green
stone.

Spike: No time we have to go.
Cut to Magic Shop
Willow: (Breathing heavily looking though the magic items.) What are we
exactly looking for?
Xander: Something to break a sorta force field thingy.
Willow: (looking worried and irritated) Oh no you got this all wrong.
Your not supposed to look at the Witch Craft works of art Xander! You
wanna go with something with forces of darkness dealings type of thing.
Go look over to that bookshelf.
Willow grabbed the book he was reading and walked over to the counter
and picked up a book that was open. There was a picture of a ring and
the words underneath it that was highlighted. Servo inferi intemptesta
nox Willow squinted her eyes as she read the words. She repeated them
softly and thought hard. She grabbed the latin translator book and she
picked up and magnifying glass Anya popped up with a bunch of boxes
scaring Willow to scream as well as Xander. Anya looked up frightened.
Anya:(frightened) What? What? What is it? BUNNIES?
Willow: (taking deep breaths) Don‘t do that! You scared me.
Xander: (trying to be manly) I wasn‘t scared
Willow:(rolling her eyes) what is all this stuff?
Anya: (smiling) Books
Xander: (looking around at the books scattered everywhere.) Cause for
God sakes there isn‘t enough here!
Willow: (grabbing the book she was reading) I don‘t think we need them
I think I found something. Buffy said Dawn was trying to communicate
with her mom; I think this is the spell she used.
Xander: How can you know for sure?
Willow: Because it‘s highlighted.
Anya: (yelling) What?! She‘s going to pay for this.
Xander:(ignoring her) what does it say?
Willow:(reading along) Basically it says ‗Observe those dead below, the
dead, dead of night.‘ (Willow looks up wide eyed) She did a hell spell!
Xander: (confused) A what spell?
Willow: It‘s a spell for the evil the dead! That‘s how Singultus must
of came in form. Joyce isn‘t in hell and she isn‘t a vampire there for
doesn‘t work!
Anya: (standing there confused) But I don‘t get it, how could he just
jump in a Buffy‘s mom custom and play walking dead?
Willow: He must have been around any way. Must of known and just said
the words with her and then boom! This is a wrong spell what she should
of said is Patronus Mortuus. Of course it doesn‘t work with out
supplies. Like this ring here. This ring is very dangerous. Just saying
the spell alone with only a beasty can end the world.
Xander: How can such a little girl make a big mess?
Anya: She actually quite big, and she needed some help.
Willow: (mumbling to herself) I guess even the littlest of girls can be
letifer. (looking up seeing everyone staring at her) Sorry, a word I
learned I guess.
Just then the phone rang. Anya jumps grabbing the phone.
Anya: Hello? Hello this is person I mean her…what do you mean you lost
it????…you lost the paper work…I gave it to you! You work there and
your not supposed to lose it…a what…a copy…I don‘t have a copy you
bunny…I‘m older then you and my soon-to-be-husband and shouldn‘t have
to work at getting married…oh…that‘s right…ok then…(anya calmly puts
the phone down and smiles at Xander and Willow staring. Grabbing
Xander) Honey we have to go see the nice people, who stupidly lost our
important papers, come on now…
Cut to
Buffy still being drag by Spike.
Buffy: Let go of me
Spike: No…no…have to go.
Buffy: Spike stop! (Buffy grabs his arm and pulls him off her arm) I‘m
not going anywhere till you tell me what‘s going on. (stands there
crossing her arms)
Spike: (sighs) I love you
Buffy: Tell me something that‘s important and that I need to know
Spike: (a little hurt) but you do need to know. Your friends might look
at you strangely to know you‘re with me, but nothing in this world will
ever get me to…
Buffy: (interrupting) what? Stop loving me? Kill me? I don‘t get you
and I don‘t want to get you. You want me to be on your ―Evil side‖ or
whatever but you want to be with me.
Spike: (looking confused) what?
Buffy: You think I‘ll be the same? I‘ll be Buffy the one you love? Do
you even love me?
Spike: (Grabbing her arm) We better go
Buffy: You never told me where.
Spike: We have to find Dawn and fast. (Turning around and walking down
the ally way)
Buffy: (softly) Spike…
Spike: (Turning around irritated) what the bloody well is it we have to
go!
Buffy: I do need to know that I‘m loved and that maybe there is a
little more feeling when I… and you… and well…thanks for helping.
Spike: (smiling) Wasn‘t a question if I would or not.
Buffy: (smiles back then quickly goes back to business.) So what‘s with
the ring? (Grabbing his arm) ya know let‘s walk and talk.

INT: Singultus' Cave.
Scene: Camera's POV: Dawn is still chained to the wall, looking worse
than the last time we saw her. Blood flows freely from her chafed
wrists, running down her arms and onto her shirt. Her head rises slowly
from off of her chest with apparent difficulty. Her face is slightly
black and blue. She has obviously endured some type of beating, which
was delivered with expert precision for there is not a cut on her face.
The camera slowly zooms in on Dawn's face and we see in her eyes the
Summers' fire.
Singultus: Well, if my pretty little bird hasn't awaken.
Camera angle changes to show Singultus' cave. Dawn is chained to one
side of the cave and opposite her is Singultus and a few of his
minions. They are forming a circle around a table where two people sit.
We recognize the two people as Warren and Jonathan. Singultus' back is
to Dawn and he seems not to be paying her too much attention.
Dawn: (surprised) How….how did you know?
Singultus: (back still towards Dawn) I can feel it, sense you in a way.
Singultus turns towards Dawn and begins to walk toward her, rattle in
hand.
Singultus: Like it or not, Sparrow, you and I are now connected. I can
feel you. (He gently places his open hand on Dawn's cheek, almost
caressing it. Dawn flinches, startled by the magick coursing between
them. This causes Singultus to smile.) And you can feel me. It is only
a matter of time before you and I are one. Then William will have lost
something that he treasures.
There is a loud explosion in the room, breaking the spell between
Singultus and Dawn at that moment. She gazes questionably up into
Singultus' black eyes. She knows something is happening between the two
of them. She can feel herself changing. Singultus smiles wickedly back
down at her before turning his back on her once again.
Camera POV changes so that we are looking over Singultus' shoulder. He
is walking back to the circle and we notice that is the source of the
loud explosion. The table is scattered with magickal materials, most of
them are unidentifiable. However, there are two locks of hair sitting
of to the edge of the table. We notice that they belong to Singultus
and Dawn.
Jonathan: Sir…Master…oh Evil Dark One, the spell is almost complete. We
just have to wait until deep midnight to add the last ingredients.
(Jonathan glances quickly at the locks of hair.) Once the hair is
added, you and the Slayer's kid sis will be bound together.
Singultus looks back at Dawn chained to the wall, an evil, sinister
expression of his face. Dawn flinches as she knows the worst is yet to
come.
Singultus: (softly) Deep Midnight.

Arys
Scene: Street. Spike is still trying to rush Buffy along. Buffy is
stopping at the payphone.
Buffy: Look, if you‘re right then Dawn‘s in more trouble than we may
be able to handle on our own. I have to call the Magic Box and tell
the others where to meet us.
Spike: Look, if you waste too much time with the Scoobies then it‘ll
stop being an issue. Dawn will be dead.
Scene: Buffy looks at him gravely.
Buffy: Go. I‘ll catch up.
Scene: Spike takes steps backwards, still looking at Buffy. Worried.
Spike: You know where to go?
Willow‘s voice on Phone: ―Uh... Magic Box.‖
Buffy: You described it pretty thoroughly, I‘ll find it. I‘ll find
you.
Close up on Buffy: Go.
Scene: Spike turns and runs flat out. Buffy turns her attention back
to the phone.
Buffy: Will, it‘s me. We think we know where he is. It looks like
we‘re going to need back up.
Willow: Xander and Anya left. Something about paperwork…
Buffy: Now?
Willow: Yeah. Look, Tara and me, we got you covered.
Buffy: Are you sure, Will?
Willow: Yeah, I‘m sure. I... Tara can help. Where?
Buffy: In the caves near Patterson Park.
Cut to Magic Box.
Scene: Willow hanging up the phone. Tara in the background looking
through books.
Willow: Spike knows where. They need back up.
Tara: Willow... Are you...
Scene: Willow getting a large broad sword from behind the counter,
and a couple of stakes.
Willow: No. You are. I‘m not going completely unarmed, though. Grab
what you need; we‘ve got to go.
Cut to cave opening near park.
Scene: Spike climbing out of cave entrance. Buffy, hands on knees
out of breath from running.
Buffy: Well? What‘s our situation?
Spike: Not good. Niblet‘s still alive, but the bastard‘s roughed her
up a bit.
Buffy looks worried. Stands up.
Spike: Easy, Slayer. This is not a storming in type of thing. You‘ll
just get her killed.
Scene: Willow and Tara approach.
Tara: Eiw! It stinks here!
Willow (holding nose): How‘d you guys find him?
Scene: Buffy raises her eyebrows at Spike.
Spike: I know what he likes and he‘d have to be close. (He fishes
the ring out of his pocket and holds it up.) It‘s ring of Binding.
Willow: Hey that‘s the one from the book!
Buffy: Book?
Willow: Dawn was trying to do that spell and she picked the wrong
one. She picked a spell that releases a hell-demon. You‘re supposed
to use the ring to control the demon ones it comes through.
Willow: Only she didn‘t have the ring... Did she?
Buffy groans.
Spike: Not control kiddies, Bind.
Tara: B-Bind? Bind how?
Spike: Soul to soul.
Buffy groans again.
Cut to Singultus‘ lair. Dawn still chained to a wall. Jonathon
watching his spell preparations. Singultus sitting in a throne-like
chair, grinning.
Singultus: A revenge is always sweeter when it reeks of the blood of
the innocent.

INT.MAGIC BOX. NIGHT.
The phone is ringing, but there's no one in the store. It keeps
ringing.
The door jingles. Anya and Xander have returned, not necessarily
from the paperwork place. She is rushing to open the door to get the
phone.
Anya reaches for the phone.
ANYA: Magic Box! Spells? Incantations? Potions? We've got the herbs
and weed for all that you need. And by weed I didn't mean illegal
hallucinogenic substances, although if boiled the right way
hallucinations may—-
CORDELIA: Anya? Dear God, please shut up.
ANYA: Who is this? You're very rude.
CORDELIA: It's Cordelia. Cordelia Chase. Is Xander around?
ANYA: (suspicious) Xander? Well yes. But you can't have him again.
We're getting married.
CORDELIA: Well congratulations and shut up again, Anya. This is an
emergency, please put him on the phone.
ANYA huffs, but passes the phone to XANDER.
XANDER: Er… yes?
CORDELIA: Xander, it's me. Did you happen to come across a handsome
hunk of a vampire lately? Dark, mysterious, invincible?
XANDER: Well, I wouldn't know how handsome… did you say invincible?
CORDELIA: Yes, invincible. There's this doctor in LA, performs
operations on vampires. He takes their hearts and they become
invincible for hours after the operation, and then they're supposed
to go poof. Only this guy, he's managed to stay alive for a few
months now. Been performing all sorts of spells to prolong his
existence.
XANDER: Singultus.
CORDELIA: Is that his name? We've been hunting him down here, but it
looks like he skipped town. Wesley just found out that he had gone
to Sunnydale, because he was going for that last part of the spell
that would keep him going forever, even without his heart.
XANDER: You LA people and your quirks. He knows he actually needs
his heart, right? Even if it's not, you know, beating.
CORDELIA: Well it wasn't exactly cosmetic surgery. Taking out the
heart makes him invincible, for a few hours. He's found out how to
make himself invincible forever.
Xander: It's doesn't have anything to do with a Slayer, right?
Because Buffy's blood seems to be the cure for everything.
CORDELIA: Actually no. He needs a pure soul. And some help from
people who can actually perform spells. Witches, or whatever. He
probably figured Sunnydale was the place to be. Wesley thinks some
kind of spell, some kind of summoning went on.
XANDER: What?
CORDELIA: (not to Xander) Just a second, Wesley, you're talking too
fast. (to Xander) He needs something called Purity Through
Vengeance.
XANDER: Vengeance?
ANYA: (listening, curious) Vengeance?
CORDELIA: He needs a pure soul, and but the spell will only work if
the act of taking the soul is an act of vengeance.
XANDER: (to Anya) You ever heard of Purity Through Vengeance?
ANYA: Oh yes. Very potent spell. It's powered by taking something
your enemy loves. I never used it though, a little too tricky, even
for a vengeance demon.
A look of understanding dawns on Xander's face.
Xander: Spike. Singultus hates Spike.
Cordelia: Spike? Well maybe you're not in Big Bad trouble after all,
I mean, who cares about what Spike loves, anyway?
Xander: Oh God. He loves Buffy. Cordelia, I have to go –--
Cordelia: He what? He loves Buffy? (starts muttering to Wesley, then
back to Xander) Wait, now while my brain just put itself on pause
for that one, Wesley says it can't be Buffy. The soul has to be
pure, and Buffy is a warrior and is not that pure, what with all the
killing.
Xander: But there's no one else… (realizing) Dawn. Oh God, and
again. Do you know what happens when this guy gets the soul he
wants? What happens to the person who used to own it?
Cordelia: Wesley says she "will cease to be." That's not good.
Xander: We have to go. We have to find them. What can we do to stop
the spell?
EXT. SINGULTUS' CAVE. NIGHT.
It is ten minutes to midnight. Buffy, Spike, Willow and Tara are
standing at the entrance of the cave.
Buffy: What does he need with Dawn's soul?
Spike: Hell if I knew. Bloke was always eccentric.
Tara: The literary types often are.
Buffy: Well whatever he wants with it, he can't have my sister's
soul. Willow, what can we do about this?
Willow: I think I can do something to counteract it. It's similar to
how I restored Tara… we just need to find whatever Singultus took
from Dawn, and give it back to her.
Tara: Do you think you can handle that?
Willow: I have to. It's for Dawn.
Tara: I'll help you.
Buffy: Good plan. We'll distract him as much as we can. Now that he
can't be staked and all.
Buffy jumps into cave entrance.
INT. SINGULTUS' CAVE. NIGHT.
It's not that big a cave after all. Moments later the gang walk into
the body of the cave. Singultus is no longer at his throne, but is
standing at the middle of the space, beside Dawn. A yellow light is
enveloping them both.
Buffy moves forward, stake in hand.
Buffy: Dawn! Dawn, it's me. I'm here.
THE NERD TROIKA quickly cower under the table with all the magic
paraphernalia. They are out of sight.
JONATHAN: The Slayer! I say we bail. Now.
Andrew: But the other vampire… Singultus says he was feeling peckish
… I don't want to be pecked.
Jonathan: You really think after all these years you'll be betting
against Buffy?
They both look at Warren.
Warren: Screw Singultus. We bail.
They scurry out from under the table and make a quick exit, unseen
by the gang or Singultus and his minions.
CUT TO:
The gang and Singultus.
Buffy: My sister's soul isn't for the taking.
Note: From this point, when Singultus speaks, Dawn speaks the same
words, in perfect unison.
Singultus/Dawn: Your sister doesn't exist.
Buffy is freaked, by the bruises on Dawn's face, by the chorus of
their words. She turns to Spike, Willow and Tara.
Buffy: (to Singultus) What did you do to her? What the hell did you
do to her?
Singultus/Dawn: She is alone, her life force does nothing. Midnight
she will cease to be, and I will be whole.
Buffy: You really think I'm going to let that happen?
Singultus/Dawn: It's already begun. Purity through vengeance. This
sad excuse for a life, this immortality cursed upon me, at midnight
they will meet, and I will gain a soul and be complete.
Behind Buffy, Willow and Tara join hands, lock eyes and begin the
spell. They don't speak though, but we know what they're doing.
Buffy: (tries to stall Singultus) What do you need with a soul?
You're a vampire. Did you lose your manual or something?
Spike stirs beside her.
Spike: Purity through vengeance.
Buffy: What?
Spike: (with urgency) He doesn't want a soul for himself, he needs
it to finish a spell. A special kind of invincibility spell. We have
to stop this now, Buffy. If he finishes it, we can't ever stop him.
Buffy frowns, doesn't get it, but leaps toward Singultus anyway. She
is stopped in mid-stride by a minion.
Big Scooby fight ensues. Four other minions leap at Buffy and Spike.
Much fighting, kicking, staking. Willow and Tara huddle, find the
table with the magic stuff, and hide under it to continue their own
counterspell.
Tara: We're losing her. I can't feel her anymore.
Willow: We still have time. But we have to get close.
Tara: We'll get ripped to shreds.
Willow: We can't let him finish the spell. We can't.
Singultus looks at the table. Without leaving his stance in the
middle of the cave, he imposes his will on the entwined lock of his
hair and Dawn's sitting on the table. It rises in the air, and drops
into the potion Jonathan had been making. In the midst of fighting,
a burst of light blinds them all. Spike just finishes dusting the
last minion, stake still poised in position in his hand.
Singultus opens his eyes, and Dawn crumples to the floor.
Singultus: (speaking alone now) It is done!
Buffy quickly looks at Willow and Tara, panic on her face. Willow
and Tara hurry out from under the table and make a run for
Singultus.
Spike, angry now, leaps ahead of them, aided by the vamp speed. He
is on Singultus in a heartbeat, and drives the stake where
Singultus' heart had been. Electricity sparks off the stake as Spike
drives it down him with much difficulty.
The force of Spike's hand is strong, and the stake goes directly
through Singultus and drops to the floor. In his chest the stake
makes a wide gaping hole, but Singultus is still standing. Buffy
braces her own stake and jumps to stake him in the same way.
She is too slow for him. As she lands in front of him, he already
has his hands around her neck, and is choking her, his wild eyes on
a level with hers. Buffy flails her hands, tries to tell Spike to
get Dawn out of the way.
And then she feels the air change. Singultus is losing his grip.
Buffy manages to get in a punch, and it breaks his chokehold on her.
He stumbles back. As his foot hits the ground, a layer of dust falls
off his person.
Buffy sees what is happening.
Buffy: Willow! Tara!
Singultus looks down, confused. Another layer of dust falls off him.
He is turning to dust, quickly now.
Willow jumps in front of him and sticks her hand in front of his
disappearing form.
Willow: (to Tara) Now!
Tara lays a hand on the unconscious Dawn's forehead and grabs
Willow's other hand with her free one.
With a cry, Singultus explodes into a cloud of dust. Willow steps
forward into it, and a green light forms around Willow's
outstretched hand. It travels up her arm, into Tara, and through
Tara's hand onto Dawn's forehead.
Dawn's eyes flutter open. Buffy is immediately at her side.
Buffy: Dawn? It's her, isn't it, Willow? It's her?
Willow looks into Dawn's eyes.
Willow: Yes, we found her. It's her.
Dawn: (with difficulty) Buffy… I just wanted to talk to Mom. That's
all I wanted.
Buffy: I know, I know. You don't have to say anything, Dawn. You're
not alone. I'm here.
INT. THE MAGIC BOX. NIGHT.
Post fight. The gang's all here. Buffy, Xander, Anya, Willow and
Tara are sitting around the table. Dawn is not seen, but is lying on
a cot in the training room. Spike is hovering by the door, silent.
Anya: You know, we really should invest in better communications
equipment. Xander and I were running around town for hours only to
find you all done with the fighting.
Xander: What matters is that you still managed to kick undead butt
even without our LA news.
Buffy: Cordelia's warning was a little late, considering. What did
she tell you about this spell?
Anya: Purity Through Vengeance hasn't been adequately documented,
really. But the power is potent, and the rage unleashed by it is
enough to juice up any ritual, like, say, conjuring invincibility.
If done correctly. It's really not that easy to do. You really have
to hate the person you're taking the pure soul from.
Buffy: Why Dawn? I hadn't done anything to that Singultus guy. Well,
nothing to earn that much ire.
Anya gives Buffy a "not everything is about you" look and silently
tilts her head in Spike's direction.
Buffy meets his eyes from across the room. He looks guilty for what
happened to Dawn. She begins to speak up, but he hangs his head in
defeat. He slips out the door without saying goodbye.
Willow: (clears her throat) Now that broodiness looks slightly
familiar.
Tara: But why didn't the invincibility work? Singultus finished the
spell, but Spike was able to stake him, and he dusted. Why didn't it
work?
Buffy: (frowning) Maybe he only thought he finished the spell.
Willow: No, he did. I felt Dawn's life force, he had it all. It went
through me.
Anya: (furrows her brow) Well that's strange.
Xander: What?
Anya: He had her life force, so he must have done it right. Binding.
Incantations. Vengeance. And yet he still dusted. He needed a pure
soul to finish the deal. (to Buffy) Does Dawn have a soul?
Buffy: (taken aback) What?
Anya: I mean, the monks made the girl, right? Did they give her a
soul when they made her?
Buffy looks at Willow, and then Xander. Willow shrugs.
Buffy: I… I don't know.
Off her look of confusion
END OF SHOW.
