Bills that are now being debated would provide insurance to millions of people who don‟t currently have it but at a very high cost to business, especially small business. That‟s why the Tempe Chamber has joined nearly 2,000 businesses, trade associations, and chambers of commerce from across the country in signing a letter on health care written by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It says that we: Oppose a government-run insurance plan because it won‟t be a fair competitor and it will erode the employer-based health insurance system. Oppose mandates on businesses that would require them to either provide coverage or pay huge fines. Support working with Congress to check the rise in health care costs, improve the quality of health care, and broaden the range of affordable health insurance options. This letter helped slow the rush toward passage of a cost-heavy bill before Congress broke for their August recess. When they come back after Labor Day, health care will once again top the agenda in both the House and the Senate. For the country‟s interests and our own, we need to make our voices heard – and this letter provides an ideal way to do it. The U.S. Chamber is keeping it open until Labor Day to allow businesses and chambers of commerce to sign on. Then when Congress comes back to complete its work, the letter will be presented to every Senator and Representative. Literally thousands of business organizations will be telling Congress to be careful about how they handle this sensitive issue, as it could be critical to our economy‟s health. Please review this letter and decide whether it expresses concerns you have about what Congress is doing. If it does, please add your name to the growing list of businesspeople who want to be heard. It only takes a minute; start by clicking here. Thanks for your consideration, and be assured that the Tempe Chamber of Commerce is working for you on this and many other issues. We could be even more effective this time with a little help from you. Sincerely, Mary Ann Miller President/CEO, Tempe Chamber of Commerce Maryann@tempechamber.org twitter.com/mamiller SUN DEVIL FOOTBALL KICKOFF LUNCHEON Join the Tempe Chamber and the ASU Alumni Association as we jump start the Sun Devil football season with Head Coach Dennis Erickson, ASU Athletics Director Lisa Love and voice of the Sun Devils, Tim Healey. SCF SAFETY TIPS Keeping Safe Around Machinery Two basic safety methods are used to keep you from slicing or dicing your fingers, hands and other body parts on industrial machines. They are guards and devices. Guards are physical barriers to the blades, saws or danger areas. They enclose dangerous machine parts and prevent worker contact. Guards must be secure and strong. Workers should not be able to bypass, remove or tamper with them. Devices interrupt the machine's operating cycle to prevent workers from reaching in or entering the danger area while the machine is cycling. They are designed to either interrupt the normal cycle of the machine if the worker‟s hands reach the point of operation; prevent the worker from reaching into the point of operation; or withdraw the worker‟s hands if they are located in or near the point of operation when the machine cycles. Employers also need to implement good housekeeping practices to promote safe working conditions around machinery. These can include: Remove slip, trip and fall hazards from the area around the machinery Use drip pans when oiling equipment Remove waste as it is generated Design the work area large enough for operations and maintenance Place machines away from high-traffic areas to reduce worker distraction Also, make sure machine operators do not wear loose-fitting clothing, jewelry, or other items that could become entangled in machinery. Long hair should be worn under a cap or contained to prevent entanglement. In addition to employee instruction and training, provide adequate supervision to reinforce safe practices and set up disciplinary action to enforce these practices and working conditions. Provided by Tod Dennis, Association Coordinator. Tempe Chamber members enjoy the benefit of participating with SCF’s workers' compensation Association Safety Program at no cost. In fact, each year many of our members receive a dividend payment for their participation. To learn more contact us at (480) 967-7891.
