SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS
The following suggestions were made for possible Artwork Committee members to be forwarded
to the Board for their consideration:
Robert Walker – business owner/artist; Kim Allen – town employee/artist/member of Dare
County Arts Council; Melanie Smith – business owner/artist; and Pat Eure – business owner
REVIEW OF ARTIST DEBORAH WELLS’ ARTWORK
The Committee unanimously passed a motion to purchase Deborah Wells’ watercolor The
Green Door for the price of $2,900 which includes a $100 allowance for the glass/frame.
DISCUSSION OF REQUEST FROM DARE COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL FOR THE OUTER
BANKS HOSPITAL ARTWORK SELECTION PROCESS
Majid Elbers reported that George Wood from the Dare County Arts Council (DCAC) and Kelly
Shields from the Marketing Department for the Outer Banks Hospital have contacted the
Artwork Selection Committee (ASC) to discuss whether the ASC would be willing and able to act
as the selecting committee for art from local artists for the new hospital building.
Committee members concurred with Majid Elbers and Mayor Muller that legally the Committee
only has authority to purchase art for the Town of Nags Head's collection.
VONNA ALEXANDER - MOTHER NESTER
In response to a question from Vonna Alexander, Majid Elbers stated that the Facilities
Maintenance (formerly Buildings and Grounds) personnel are authorized to install the Mother
Nester sculptures in pilings between the two (2) lobby doors on the first floor of Town Hall.
VONNA ALEXANDER - LOBBY LIGHTING
In response to a question from Vonna Alexander, Majid Elbers stated that the Board of
Commissioners has adopted an additional paragraph to the artwork ordinance allowing artwork
funds to be utilized for artwork-related needs.
