A Classic Revisited - Charlotte's Web
Remember reading Charlotte's Web when you were in school? It's a classic story that can be shared with your own kids. The story of Wilbur, a pig, and Charlotte, the spider who saved him, is a favorite of children and adults. For children, it's an exciting story full of funny moments and minor adventures with universal favorites, farm animals, as the main characters. For adults, the story is also entertaining, but there are much deeper themes and lessons to be learned-- the importance of loyalty to one's friends, how love can, indeed, prevail, and that life, while unbearably sad at times, is ultimately worth living.
The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) is hosting a Walk on September 12, 2009 at Pier Village in Long Branch. We hope you will join us in
This is a perfect summertime read. It is written on a third to sixth grade reading level, but a young child can follow the story in a chapter or two a night. Some fun follow-up activities might be a trip to a local farm (for example Longstreet Farm in Holmdel) or a special movie afternoon with either the live-action version of Charlotte's Web from 2006 or the animated version from 1973. Older children might even want to create their own dramatic interpretations of the novel. One word of caution -- the novel, while written for children, does not sugarcoat farm life. In

the first chapter, Wilbur faces death by the hand of Mr. Arable and is narrowly saved by Arable's daughter, Fern. There is a death of a main character later on in the book. Use your judgment in the sensitivity of your child and his or her ability to handle such a theme in a book. - Book Review Written by Katey Patrizio
