                            PROFESSIONAL DESIGN PLAN
The following design plan was adapted from similar exercises included in Career Moves:
Taking Charge of Your Training Career Now (Reitman & Williams, 2006). Its purpose is to assist
you in developing a vision for your life’s work, to prompt you to reflect on how and why your work
is important to you, and to provide a framework and strategy for making your vision a reality.

Your Professional Design Plan (PDP) assignment is designed to be revisited and updated
from time to time. In this respect, you should approach your PDP as a soul-searching and
introspective document that reflects where you are in your current career at this point in time and
where you need to go to reach your desired career position. Keep this in mind as you work through
Parts I through III and respond with thoughtful responses. Also, don’t try to complete your PDP in
one sitting. It will take think-time, as well as time to compose your responses. Cite any sources you
use in APA format. You may need to refer to your APA Publication Manual (6th ed.) (2009).

Parts I and II of this assignment are the foundation work for developing your action plan in
Part III. While students comment they are repeating information from Part II in Part III, you should
read the text book and the questions carefully. Part III as the actual plan you can use to achieve
success in your next career.

Part I will be completed after you read and study Chapter 2, Understanding and Developing
Key Competencies for Your Future pages 23-29, and Chapter 3, Leveraging Your Strengths and
Moving Your Career Forward pages 31-51 in your Reitman and Williams (2006) text; and after you
take the Transferable Skills Survey.

Parts II and III will be completed after you read Chapter 5, Preparing for Change, pages 59-
82; and Chapter 6, Creating Your Ideal Career Path, pages 83-96.
