Support for ‘Korean Culture Festival’
at U.S. Universities
The Korea Foundation (KF), together with the Korea International Trade Association (KITA)
and the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) (hereafter referred to as the “Sponsors”), have
joined forces to promote understanding of Korean culture and arts at U.S. universities and to
foster friendship among university students from diverse cultures and backgrounds. In
particular, the Sponsors seek to encourage Korean-American or Korea-related student
associations to organize “Korean Culture Festival” events that feature Korean films and food.
Eligibility for Support
Eligible Applicants
Korean-American or Korea-related student associations of U.S. universities, including
graduate-school organizations, are eligible to apply.
Activities Eligible for Support
Korean film and food festivals, targeted for the general student populations of U.S.
universities, are eligible for funding. Related cultural or academic activities, such as
relevant performances, seminars, or lectures will be considered as well.
Korean Film Festival
A set of four Korean films (Forever the Moment, 200 Pounds Beauty, Portrait of a Beauty,
and Hangeul Becomes an Art) in DVD format with English subtitles will be provided to the
selected applicants, free of charge, by KITA for showing at a university’s film festival. This
event is intended to enhance mutual understanding and friendship among the university
community; as such, admission to this festival MUST be free of charge. In addition, after
the event, to help promote Korean films, the DVD set should be donated to a relevant
institution or organization, such as a library or department related to Korean Studies, in the
name of KITA.
Korean Food Festival
A “Korean Food Festival” should be presented in conjunction with the film festival to
promote Korean food as well as to create a more festive atmosphere. In particular,
applicants are encouraged to use the terms and descriptions outlined in the Korean Food
Guide in English publication, which will be provided to applicants, at no charge, upon
request.
Other Korea-related Events
Seminars, presentations, performances, and other creative events, designed to help
students at U.S. universities enhance their understanding of Korean culture and arts, are
also eligible for support.
Period
Events should be conducted during the period from October 1, 2009 through May 31, 2010.
Each applicant should schedule the event in consideration of its university’s academic
calendar. Of note, a suggested date is on or around October 9, 2009, when Korea
observes Hanguel Day, to celebrate the creation of Hanguel, which is recognized as one of
the world’s most scientific writing systems.
Event Support
The Sponsors intend to select thirty (30) student associations that will each be provided
with financial support of $2,000 and the set of four Korean films (DVDs) described above. A
video clip on Korean tourism “Korea, Sparkling” will be provided along with travel
guidebooks by the KTO. Host associations are recommended to play the video and
distribute guidebooks to the audience.
Application
Application Form
Along with the submission of an application form, applicants are encouraged to provide
additional materials to support the applicant’s event plans and to describe previous
activities undertaken to promote Korean culture. Applicants are required to assure the
Sponsors they can procure or have access to a suitable venue and equipment, such as an
auditorium with a movie screen and beam-projector, for the Korean film festival, and for the
Korean food-tasting event.
Deadline for Application
A hard copy and e-mail version of the application should be postmarked to the Korea
Foundation Washington, D.C. Office by no later than September 11, 2009. Please refer to
the contact information below for the office and e-mail addresses.
Notification of Support
Individual applicants will be notified of the results of the Sponsors’ evaluation by the end of
September 2009.
Required Report
All recipient student associations are required to submit an event report, in accordance with
the prescribed report form, within 30 days after the event’s conclusion. The report should
include a written narrative as well as photos and video, which the Sponsors could post on
their websites. In addition, the event reports of all 30 recipient groups will be compiled and
published in a 2009-10 program catalogue.
