1. Traditional Welcome and Acknowledgement



 Jason Carr, Chairperson opened the meeting at 10:10am.

 Ron Doyle performed the traditional welcome.

3. Housekeeping:



Accept Minutes of Previous Meeting – February 2010



Motion to accept previous minutes as true and correct:

Updates required to SCING Contact List



 Cindi (SCRC) advised that the SCING contact list requires updating.

 Cindi requested that all representatives update details on attendance sheet distributed at

meeting.



ACTION: Contact Cindi (SCRC) if your contact details require amendment – All SCING

representatives.



Terms of Reference Review (Workshop)



 Cindi (SCRC) assisted with discussion on updating SCING Terms of Reference.

 Following amendments to be made:

 Refinement on purpose and aim of SCING.

 Inclusion of Deputy Chairperson.

 Inclusion of roles and responsibilities of representatives, including chairperson, deputy

chairperson and secretary.

 Inclusion of operational information, including frequency of meetings, meeting

structure and management of meeting documentation.



ACTION: Develop DRAFT Terms of Reference and distribute to all representatives prior

to April meeting - Cindi (SCRC).



Vote in new Chairperson



 Bianca Bond nominated for Chairperson.

 Motion moved to accept Bianca‟s nomination

 SCING representatives thanked Jason (DEEDI) for his hard work and commitment to the

Chairperson role over last 12 months.

 Jason‟s great work was recognised and very much appreciated by all.

Vote in new Deputy Chairperson (Chair)



 Jason Carr was nominated from floor to fulfil the Deputy Chairperson position.

 Jason declined nomination.

 Christine May nominated for Deputy Chairperson.

 Motion moved to accept Christine‟s nomination

4. Link-Up Queensland (Helen Bnads and Dr Melisha Feeney)



 Link Up representatives did not attend meeting.



5. Keep Australia Working Program (Steve Hogan, DEEWR)



 Keep Australia Working Program is an Australian Government initiative to protect jobs and

support business in the current economic climate.

 The Australian Government identified 20 areas on the Sunshine Coast / Caboolture as

priority areas.

 Funding has been provided to establish employment initiatives in these areas, including

Indigenous employment initiatives.

 Steven Hogan is the Local Employment Coordinator for Sunshine Coast / Caboolture

region and has a focus on Indigenous employment.

 In partnership with Centrelink, Steve will be organising a Jobs Expo on 4 June 2010 at

Lake Kawana Community Centre.

 Steve is keen to develop and support initiatives that support Indigenous people into

employment.

6. Indigenous Smoking Cessation (Renate Millonig, Sunshine Coast Division of General

Practice)

 Renate from Sunshine Coast Division of General Practice provided a short presentation on

smoking in the community.

 Renate is the Project Manager of the Indigenous Smoking Cessation Program.

 Research shows that 16% non-Indigenous population smokes currently, and between 50-

80% in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations across Australia.

 Renate is keen to support community health initiatives to reduce the number of Indigenous

smokers.

 Renate is available to do presentations on smoking cessation in the community.

7. Scams in the Community (Michelle Kuz, Fair Trading Operations)



 Michelle Kuz from Fair Trading Operations Sunshine Coast provided a short presentation

on scams in the community.

 Scams are schemes that deprive unsuspecting consumers of their money and give little or

no value in return. Examples Nigerian scams, bogus charities, SMS/Text scams, chain letter

and pyramid scams.

 Scams cost Australia around $1 billion per year.

 SCING representatives were asked to make community aware of scams that are happening

on the Sunshine Coast.

ACTION: Distribute community scams presentation with minutes - Cindi (SCRC).

8. Youth Motivational Event (Bianca Bond) – 10 minutes

 Bianca provided and update on planning for the event:

 Event will be held on Saturday, 5 June 2010 at Nambour Show Grounds.

 The event is targeting Indigenous youth 15-25 years.

 4-5 funding applications submitted.

 Nambour High students to name event.

 Developing promotional material and invitations for event.

 Bus organised to transport kids to event from Brisbane, Stradbroke Island, Cherbourg.

 Looking for equipment and support from community to assist with event.

 Looking for first aid officers to work at event.

 10-11 workshops organised for young people.

 OXFAM.

 Helena – self determination and identity.

 Mentoring opportunities.

 Gubbi Gubbi Dance Group.

 Di Greer.

 Music development and multi media.

 Impossible Odds will hold beat boxing workshop.

 David Williams – skateboarding 20x20 metre ramp (mobile) also workshop design on

skateboards.

 Young people to showcase dance, arts, performance.

 Professional performers to close event in afternoon.

9. General Business:



Indigenous Website:



 Representatives discussed changes to website name (currently YAN GARBANDJILUM -

come everybody)

 It was agreed that the website needed to have a familiar name that community would

remember



ACTION: Look at local language dictionary for appropriate wording - Bianca



 Representatives also discussed changing of wording – “meet the locals”

 Motion moved to change wording to “Who’s your mob”.

 Motion Moved– All in favour



ACTION: Arrange amendments to website - Cindi



 Cindi (SCRC) asked SCING representatives to bring any suggestions for improving the

website to upcoming SCING meetings or you can contact Cindi directly at Council.



Corrective Services initiative (Bianca Bond)



 DEEWR and Corrective services partnership

 8 people put through justice entry Certificate IV

 20 plus Certificate III Business Administration put into public services if not continuing

with corrective services



Upcoming Funding Programs (Terry Bell)



 Overview of Sport and Recreation funding provided.

 Funding available for:

 Sport and Recreation Active Inclusion Program.

 Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Program.

 Local Sport and Recreation Jobs Plan.

 Look at partnerships for program delivery.

Local Indigenous Resource Expo



 Seeking expressions of interest for a local Indigenous resource expo which is being

organised by the Sunshine Coast Indigenous Education Network.

ATSIS

 Ron Doyle has now moved to Caboolture.



HOPE:

 Briony advised that Wendy Furro has stepped down from her position.

 Briony currently coordinating Foster Care and Kinship program.

 Briony can provide information on program and information on being a foster carer.



NCACCH

 Vern advised NCACCH website is currently being updated

 Smoking Cessation Poster competition is due to close on the 1 April 2010.



Cultural Healing Program

 Jennifer advised the next Black Swans Big Day Out is on Sunday, 28 March at Nambour

PCYC.

 Working on smoking cessation education program with Bella from the Indigenous Health

Program.



Suncare



 Paul advised that the „Keeping Community Strong‟ services directory is being updated.

 Electronic version (1st draft) should be available in the next few weeks for review.



Jason

 Interviews being undertaken for Sunshine Coast work placements.

 Mission Australia assisting 26 unemployed young people through Murri Pathways

program.

 Working with ICP strategic employment program and SEQ Traditional Owners Group.

 6 traineeships Cert III Land Conservation and up to 7 with ANZ bank.



10. Other Business:
