What is CALM?
          CALM - Overall
• Continuous Air interface
  for Long and Medium distance

• ISO TC204/WG16 – Wide Area Communications
• Support user transparent continuous
  communications
• CALM is the first open way to combine GPRS
  with vehicle-optimized WLAN technology.
   - NOT a complicated collection of new, unproven
  radio technologies

        CALM Applications
• Support of Internet services
• Support of traditional ITS apps – media
  independent through DSRC L7
• New generation of applications:
  – Major push in safety – Vehicle Safety
    Communication
  – New commercial applications made possible by
high data rate & long range.

   TC204/WG16 Co-operation
• IEEE 802.11p and P1609 – Wireless Access in
  Vehicular Environments (WAVE)
  - Co-operation agreement with WG16
• ETSI ERM TG37 – 2G/3G standards, spectrum
  and test standards,…
• IETF – Internet Network Mobility (NEMO)
• ITU-R WP 8A – Global radio standards

What is CALM M5?
        US DSRC (WAVE)
• WAVE is IEEE 802.11p
  Wireless Access for Vehicles
   - as required by US DoT/VSCC/VII/…
• WAVE is optimised for US channel plan
• WAVE protocols are optimised for current
  single-radio technology.
• No GSM or other technology is included.

               CALM M5
• CALM M5 incorporate WAVE and adds:
  – Global (European) 5 GHz spectrum
  – Regulatory domain (border) management
  – Directivity and EMC control
  – CEN DSRC co-operation
  – Multiple radio/interface/antenna management
  – GPRS/UMTS network interconnectivity

   – pan-European allocation with at least 2*10MHz bandwidth
   – National allocations with at least 4*10MHz
   – Mobile use of current unlicensed bands 5.4-5.6 GHz
• Request for frequencies in 4.9-6.0 GHz band, but most
likely in the 5.9 GHz band. Potential interference with
5.8GHz DSRC – must be solved by system integration
• Power level is dynamic from 0dBm – 33dBm EIRP
• Process involves several steps with ETSI – CEPT and
national authorities. Possible first ideas early 2006.

                             Comments 802.11p
The term DSRC partially overlap the term WAVE. DSRC is used for other Replace all usage of DSRC
technologies in Europe, Asia and many other regions. DSRC is also standardised by with WAVE (a note should
ISO, CEN, ETSI, ITU etc. as a different technology creating confusion with 802.11p. be added in annex K)
DSRC is also a misnomer since the purpose of 802.11 is NOT to be dedicated, and
range up to 1000 m is not short range.
The term OBU could be misleading since 802.11p will no be a stand-alone unit, but Replace OBU with WAVE
rather be connected to in-vehicle networks. OBU is not harmonised with IEEE Station (WS)
terminology, and this could hamper IEEE acceptance.
RSU is also a legacy term from DSRC that is imprecise and confusing in the 802.11 Replace RSU with WAVE
area. Suggest to replace with more acceptable IEEE term Access Point
There are several references to requirements and specifications that are specific to Move remaining North
North American spectrum allocations and spectrum usage rules. There is a heavy Am. references to annex
interest to use 802.11p globally, and the 11p PAR includes a cooperation agreement K.
with ISO TC204/WG16 that will reference and build on 802.11p for global usage.
Many of the North American specific items have already been moved to Annex K, and
this process should be completed.
                                                                                       802.11p should allow for
                                                                                       multiple simultaneous
The operational concept of 802.11p is focusing on a single channel at-a-time /single channel operation and
antenna operation in the vehicle. The CALM concept supports multiple simultaneous include control for
channels, multiple antennas and spatial processing multiple antennas
Reference to comment 4, one operational restriction has been that WAP is restricted Remove restricting
to stationary use only. WAVE Access Points may be mounted on movable requirements for
infrastructure, or may even be used in hand-held configuration in some usage stationary use only, or
scenarios. move to Annex K
