Watershed
Media
Centre:
Background
Information
Watershed
Media
Centre
(“Watershed”)
in
Bristol,
UK,
is
a
cross‐art‐form
venue
which
promotes
engagement,
enjoyment,
diversity
and
participation
in
film,
media
arts
and
the
creative
economy.
Watershed
is
recognized
at
a
national
level
as
a
leading
player
in
the
development
of
the
creative
industries
and
delivers
to
a
wide
range
of
public
sector
stakeholders.
Embedded
in
Bristol’s
vibrant
creative
ecology,
Watershed
offers
a
wide
range
of
opportunities
for
people
of
all
ages
and
backgrounds
to
engage
with
film
and
digital
media.
Watershed
offers
public
film
screenings,
events
and
debate
in
the
building
and
online,
film
festivals,
creative
networks,
conferences
and
events,
and
an
online
publishing
platform
showcasing
the
creative
work
of
the
South
West.
Watershed
leads
local
and
international
projects
that
support
people
to
develop
creative
ideas
and
build
media
and
digital
literacies.
For
example,
Watershed
manages
eShed,
a
dynamic
non‐formal
young
people’s
learning
programme
and
youth
media
network
that
broadens
young
people’s
access
to
a
variety
of
creative
forms
of
self‐expression
through
digital
media
and
supports
them
to
become
active
citizens.
Watershed
projects
like
the
Encounters
International
Short
Film
Festival
and
depict.org
support
innovations
in
short
film
and
digital
creativity.
Watershed’s
collaborative
venture,
the
Pervasive
Media
Studio,
acts
as
a
living
lab,
building
partnerships
between
technologists,
academics,
and
artists
to
produce
next
generation
media
applications
(www.pmstudio.co.uk).
Watershed
and
Europe
In
2009,
Watershed
was
named
as
an
example
of
best
practice
for
fostering
creativity
and
innovation
by
the
DG
Education
and
Culture
of
the
European
Commission
in
the
context
of
the
European
Year
of
Creativity
and
Innovation.
Watershed
is
a
member
of
Europa
Cinemas
and
enjoys
active
relationships
with
cultural
venues,
industry
festivals
and
media
institutes
across
Europe.
Among
Watershed’s
projects
is
Electric
December.
Supported
by
the
European
Commission,
Electric
December
is
an
online
exhibition
platform
that
showcases
short
films
produced
by
young
people
from
across
Europe
and
is
produced
in
partnership
with
organisations
from
several
European
countries.
Watershed
Promotes
European
Cooperation
in
the
Youth
Sector
Through
eShed,
Watershed
supports
young
people
of
all
backgrounds
to
use
media
and
creative
technology
to
create,
articulate
and
broadcast
their
points
of
view
and
opinions,
and
to
develop
as
active
European
citizens.
As
well
as
building
key
skills
and
literacies
among
the
youth
of
Bristol,
eShed
partners
with
other
youth
media
organisations
across
Europe
to
produce
creative
media
projects,
thereby
supporting
intercultural
dialogue
and
cultural
exchange.

This
activity
has
strengthened
Watershed’s
commitment
to
contributing
to
the
development
of
quality
support
systems
for
youth
activities
nationally
and
across
Europe.
Watershed
intends
to
join
up
with
other
European
organisations
that
work
with
young
people
and
that,
like
Watershed,
highlight
an
openness
to
cultural
diversity
as
a
means
of
fostering
intercultural
communication
and
of
promoting
closer
links
between
the
arts,
youth
NGOs
and
schools.
Watershed’s
aim
is
to
help
develop
the
capabilities
of
organisations
in
the
European
youth
sector
by
exchanging
best
practice,
networking,
and
developing
innovative
approaches
and
methodologies.
To
this
end,
Watershed
has
developed
Engage,
a
continuing
professional
development
programme
that
supports
European
youth
workers
to
meet
the
challenges
and
opportunities
inherent
in
Europe’s
growing
digital
environment.
