3D Design-Course Outline Miss Yeager
The 3D Design course meets on an A/B day alternating schedule, for 45 minutes a day, for the entire school year.
Upon successful completion of the course requirements you will receive .5 credits toward graduation. 3D Design
focuses on the creation of 3-Dimensional Art from 3 different perspectives. You will take on the point of view of a
Sculptor, Craftsperson, and Industrial Designer. A wide variety of materials will be explored such as metal wire,
wood, found objects, clay, fibers, and plastics. An emphasis on the planning stages of the creative process will be
enforced. We will connect to contemporary artists, craftsmen, and designers from the 20th century to present day.
Required Materials-Due______________
2 White Tall Kitchen Trash Bags Pencil
1 plastic shoe box with lid (approx. 4-6 quart size) Folder (to be left in classroom)
Miscellaneous materials will also be needed as we go along. I will give you 1 week’s notice to bring them in and
this will count towards class participation.
Projects
Students will have 8 major projects to complete over the course of the year. These projects are divided into 3 Units:
3 Sculptures, 3 Crafts, and 2 Industrial Design Projects. Each project will be worth 50 points. Smaller projects may
be added throughout the year as well, and they will be adjusted according to their complexity.
Journals
Every student will be required to keep a daily reflection log. These will be very short (2 sentences) writing prompts
that connect to the current lesson or project. Forms will be handed out each week that will need to be completed
each day. They will be collected in your folders and graded weekly. They will be worth 2 points a day, but don’t let
that fool you…these points do add up!!!
Sketches
All students are required to produce detailed plans and sketches prior to beginning construction. Sketches will be
approved and graded. Keep in mind, you are not graded on your drawing skills, but rather how well you plan out
the creative process and make each of your steps intentional. Sketching is a key step in the creative process. It is
like brainstorming before the final product.
Critiques
Written self-evaluations of each project will be expected from each student for every graded project. They will be
worth 16 points. Class critiques will also be used periodically throughout the year, in the form of group discussions.
Class Participation:
A class participation/effort grade is a separate grade for each marking period, as well as incorporated into each
project rubric. This includes: properly following instructions and directions when building or using the studio
facilities, care of tools and equipment, daily work during scheduled class time, cleaning, acceptable public behavior
and language, RESPECT for others and their art.
Students are expected to be present in class WITH all of their materials.
Students must be present in class in order to participate in class discussions and project work.
Participation during class discussions and group critiques will also be factored into your overall Class Participation
Grade.
Grading:
Students are evaluated upon their own individual progress throughout the year. You are not compared to others.
Students will be assessed for each major project using a rubric (scoring sheet). This sheet will be given at the start of
each major project and will outline critical areas of development and skill necessary for successful completion of the
specific project.
The general criteria to be included on the rubrics: Fulfills Assignment Requirements, Craftsmanship,
Originality/Creativity, Evidence of Comprehension of the Elements and Principles of Design, and Effort.
