To AS Funding,
I would like to take a minute to say a few more words about Phi Lambda Rho’s Noche de
Cultura event. Almost five years ago, a Phi Lambda Rho sister sparked the idea that the Latino
community should have a day in which to make the spirit of our cultura come alive. From
attending celebrations that made other cultures glow, she saw the need to represent the Latino
culture. The need to acknowledge the fact that culture is at the root of our being is what
motivates this event, it is what has brought it to it’s fifth year in existence. It is imperative that
this event continues to be celebrated for it is, if anything, one candle light that is lit lighting the
way for our culture to continue being celebrated and acknowledged. We hope this cultural
celebration continues on into the tomorrow, to remind future generations that cultura is
everything from what we eat, to how we speak, to what music we listen to and to the influences
from our history. Culture is who we are and who we are makes a difference in this community
and others. On Noche de Cultura, we only wish to celebrate our culture and to embrace who we
are.
Thank you,
Patricia Calderon-Vargas
