THIRD GRADE SOCIAL SCIENCE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS & BENCHMARKS



3. 1 STUDENTS DESCRIBE THE PHYSICAL AND HUMAN GEOGRAPHY AND USE MAPS, TABLES, GRAPHS, PHOTOGRAPHS,

AND CHARTS.



First Trimester

 Understand the concept of continuity and change relative to geographical features and use of natural resources.

 Identify geographical features in their local region (deserts, mountains, valleys, hills, coastal areas, oceans, lakes).

 Understand the ways in which people have used the resources of the local region and modified the physical environment

(e.g., a dam constructed upstream changed a river or coastline).

 Locate, identify, and label California and the United States. (L.S.)

 Locate, identify, and label seven continents and four oceans. (L.S.)



Third Trimester

 Understand the concept of continuity and change as it relates to human migration and the development of Tulare

County.

 Understand using referencing material the concept of continuity and change relative to past and present local history.

 Demonstrate knowledge of the ways in which people have used the resources of the local region and modified the

physical environment (e.g. a dam constructed upstream changed a river or coastline). (Visalia/Tulare County)



3.2 STUDENTS DESCRIBE THE AMERICAN INDIAN NATIONS IN THEIR LOCAL REGION LONG AGO AND IN THE RECENT

PAST.

 Demonstrate knowledge of the ways in which physical geography, including climate, influenced how the Yokut Indian

nations adapted to their natural environment (e.g., how they obtained food, clothing, tools).



Third Trimester

 Understand the concept using reference materials of continuity and change relative to past and present Tulare County

local history.

 Demonstrate an understanding of the interaction of new settlers with the already established Native Americans of the

region.



3.3 STUDENTS DRAW FROM HISTORICAL AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES TO ORGANIZE THE SEQUENCE OF LOCAL,

HISTORICAL EVENTS AND DESCRIBE HOW EACH PERIOD OF SETTLEMENT LEFT ITS MARK ON THE LAND.



Third Trimester

 Understand the concept using reference materials of continuity and change as it relates to human migration and the

 Demonstrate knowledge of explorers, newcomers who visited here and the people who continue to come here, including

their cultural and religious traditions.

 Describe the economy established by settlers and their influence on our present economy, emphasizing private property

and entrepreneurship.

 Use reference materials to demonstrate knowledge of past and present local history.

 Understand the concept of continuity and change relative to past and present local history.

 Understand why their community was established and how individuals and families contributed to its founding and

development.

 Demonstrate the knowledge of Tulare County then and now.
