					Lab Equipment…
Magnifying glass
        • Used to examine
          object sin greater
          detail than the
          unaided eye allows
                 Beaker

Beakers hold solids
or liquids that will
not release gases
when reacted or
are unlikely to
splatter if stirred
or heated.
Erlenmeyer Flask

        Erlenmeyer flasks hold
        solids or liquids splatter
        if stirred or heated.
           Graduated Cylinder

A graduated cylinder
  is used to measure
  volumes of liquids.

• ALWAYS measure
  from the meniscus
         Lab Safety Goggles
• Used to protect your
  eyes from chemicals
  and dangerous
  objects such as
  broken glass
• To protect you, they
  MUST be worn over
  the eyes.
Test Tube and Test Tube Holder

A test tube holder is
  useful for holding a
  test tube which is
  too hot to handle.

A test tube is used to
  keep large numbers
  of samples in one
  place
Bunsen Burner
       • Used to start a flame.
Florence flask
       • It can be used as a
         container to hold
         solutions of
         chemicals. A
         Florence flask has a
         round body with a
         single long neck and
         with either a round or
         a flat bottom.
Pipette
    • Use to draw liquids
      and dispense.
        Test Tube Racks

Are used to hold and store the test
tubes
            Test Tube Brushes

Test tube brushes are
used to clean test tubes
and graduated cylinders.

Forcing a large brush into
a small test tube will
often break the tube.
             Medicine Dropper

                              A medicine dropper is
                              used to transfer a
                              small volume of liquid
                              (less than one mL).

On top of each medicine dropper is a “rubber bulb”
                  Forceps

Forceps (or tweezers) are used to pick up small
objects.
                     Funnel

A funnel is used
to aid in the
transfer of liquid
from one vessel
to another.
Bunsen Burner

      Bunsen burners are used
      for the heating of
      nonvolatile liquids and
      solids.
Metric Rulers
       • Used for measuring
         length of objects.
  Balance scales….Triple Beam
            Balance
• Used to measure the
  mass of an object

   – Can be an electronic scale

               OR

   – Can be manual like a triple
     beam balance scale
             Cutting tools
• Scissors

• Scalpels
Dissecting Probes
         • Used to open,
           manipulate, or hold
           samples that may be
           dissected or
           examined.
Dissecting pins
        • Used to pin down
          specimen for
          dissecting.
          Ex…frogs, pigs,
          earthworm etc….
Dissecting Pan
       • Used to keep the
         things we cut up in
         one place, and to
         minimize mess
            Thermometers
• Used to determine
  temperature
Compound Light Microscope
             • Used to examine
               items or objects too
               small for the unaided
               eye
Petri Dishes
      • Used to grow
        microorganisms,
        usually with agar of
        some type…we will
        discuss these in more
        detail later in the year
Microscope slides and cover slips
• Used to examine
  samples under a
  microscope…again,
  we will talk more
  about these and their
