Pioneering Olympic Stadium design unveiled

Stadium plans revealed
London 2012 has unveiled its Olympic Stadium design. The innovative 80,000-seat venue has been designed to offer a sustainable legacy for the local community, as well as an inspirational experience for athletes and spectators. Plans by architects HOK Sport reveal a sunken bowl which is designed to place spectators close to the action. After the Games, 55,000 seats will be removed to leave a 25,000 seat permanent venue, capable of hosting athletics and other sporting events as well as a range of community uses. This is the first Olympic Stadium to have such a large temporary element built-in. It responds to the International Olympic Committee’s call for greater emphasis on sustainable development and legacy planning. Londres 2012 a dévoilé les plans du Stade olympique Doté de 80 000 places, ce site novateur a été conçu pour offrir un héritage durable à la communauté locale ainsi qu’une expérience de nature à stimuler athlètes et spectateurs. Dessiné par les architectes d’HOK Sport, le projet révèle un bol concave qui permettra au public d’être au plus près de l’action. A l’issue des Jeux, sa capacité sera ramenée de 80 000 à 25 000 places pour laisser place à un stade permanent pouvant accueillir des compétitions d’athlétisme et d’autres épreuves sportives. Il servira également à la communauté. Il s’agit du premier stade olympique doté d’une structure temporaire aussi vaste, afin de répondre aux recommandations du CIO en faveur du développement durable et de l’héritage. Par ailleurs, les travaux de terrassement avancent plus vite que prévu. La construction pourrait donc démarrer au printemps 2008. 2012 learn from Beijing visit 2012 a beaucoup appris à Beijing
A full team from LOCOG spent invaluable time in Beijing in the summer as part of the Test Event Observer Programme. Director of Sport Debbie Jevans and senior members of the LOCOG Sport Department were joined by colleagues from the Venues and Infrastructure, Operations and Technology teams. The group attended Test Events in Archery, Beach Volleyball, Canoe/ Kayak (Flatwater), Cycling (BMX and Road), Equestrian, Hockey, Rowing and Wrestling. Information gathered from all the key operational areas will be used to help plan LOCOG’s own Test Event Programme. Debbie said: ‘There is a lot we can learn from this excellent trip. We will be using the Test Events in Beijing as a benchmark for our own planning.’ Cet été, une délégation du Comité organisateur de Londres 2012 (LOCOG) a effectué un séjour très précieux à Beijing, dans le cadre du programme des observateurs des épreuves préolympiques. Elle était composée de Debbie Jevans, directrice des Sports, et de cadres du département du Sport, ainsi que de membres des départements Sites et Infrastructures et Opérations et Technologie. IFs updated on progress Les FI informées des travaux
The trip to Beijing for the Test Events also allowed the LOCOG Sport Department to meet and update many International Federation (IF) representatives. Director of Sport Debbie Jevans and Head of Sport Competition David Luckes spent valuable time with the IFs, enabling them to discuss the organisation of their sports in London and update them on the progress towards London 2012. Following the Test Events, David and Neil Snowball, LOCOG Head of Sport Operations, attended the IAAF World Championships in Osaka. The team also visited several World Championships, including the Artistic Gymnastic and Mountain Bike World Championships and the Taekwondo Olympic Qualifier. Since the summer Debbie and her team have held meetings with 15 of the IFs and continue to build upon the vital relationships they have with all the sports. International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Chief Executive Xavier Gonzalez is pleased with progress towards the 2012 Paralympic Games, following the latest IPC project review. The Chief Executive attended a two-day meeting at London 2012 headquarters, where he received an overview of preparations to date. He said: ‘We really see 2012 as a great opportunity to position the Paralympic Games as a distinctive and attractive event for the public, sponsors and media alike. London 2012 has shown its commitment to achieve that.’

Paul Deighton has reaffirmed London 2012’s commitment to deliver a great integrated Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Chief Executive of the London 2012 Organising Committee was addressing the General Assembly of the IPC in Seoul, Korea. He provided an update on continuing work to ensure that planning for both Games was fully integrated, allowing the delivery of two distinct events in 2012. LOCOG update NOCs/NPCs LOCOG renseigne les CNO/CNP
The LOCOG Sport Department joined National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) in Beijing for the Chefs de Mission seminars this summer. LOCOG Director of Sport Debbie Jevans, Samantha Curling, NOC and NPC Relations Manager and Piers Jones, Paralympic Sport Manager, represented LOCOG at both events, alongside colleagues from the International Relations Department. The visit provided an opportunity to meet with members of the Olympic and Paralympic families and learn from the Beijing Organising Committee’s own preparations. Samantha also attended the General Assembly of the European Paralympic Committee in Crete, where she presented the latest 2012 progress with Tony Sainsbury, LOCOG’s Head of Paralympic Planning. Meanwhile, Simon Clegg, Chief Executive of the British Olympic Association, presented a progress report on behalf of London 2012 at the European Olympic Committee General Assembly held in Valencia, Spain. adidas turned London into a series of giant sports venues to celebrate becoming the latest UK partner of London 2012. Games legends including Nadia Comaneci took part in a series of events to announce the biggest ever single event sponsorship investment adidas has made in the UK. The global sports brand, which will supply 25 of 26 Olympic sports in 2012, becomes the Official Sportswear Partner of the London 2012 Games. adidas joins Lloyds TSB and EDF Energy on the list of domestic partners. Herbert Heiner, adidas Global CEO, said: ‘We will play a major role in what promises to be one of the best sporting events the world has ever seen.’

2012 Sport: Athletics, Opening and Closing Ceremonies Location: southern end of the Olympic Park, surrounded by waterways on three sides Design The Olympic Stadium is designed to be different, breaking new ground for sustainable sports venues. Architects HOK Sport say it is ‘cleverer’ than any previous solution. It is based around a sunken bowl, with the field of play built into the ground to bring spectators close to the action. On the outside, a colourful fabric curtain ‘wraps’ 860 metres around the whole venue, creating a canvas for inspiring images. Facilities The cable-supported roof spans 28 metres all the way round the stadium, providing cover for two-thirds of the 80,000 spectators. Spectators will arrive via an entry-level podium, where clusters of selfcontained ‘pods’ house catering and retail outlets. Transport The Olympic Stadium will be easily accessible – by foot or wheelchair – from the Olympic Village. At the south of the Olympic Park, it will be linked by a footbridge to Stratford International Station – at one end of the seven-minute Javelin® train link from St Pancras in central London. Up to 25,000 people an hour are expected to use the service. Nearby, the improved Stratford Regional Station will be served by a further nine rail services, including the Docklands Light Railway and the Jubilee and Central lines on the London Underground. Work to extend and improve the lines is already underway. Legacy After the 2012 Games, the stadium will be converted down to a 25,000-seat venue with a range of sport and community uses. It is the first time in the history of stadium design that such a large demountable element has been attempted, with the aim of creating a ‘living stadium’ that reaches beyond sport.

A l’extérieur, un rideau de panneaux textiles aux couleurs vives ‘enveloppe’ l’intégralité du stade sur 860 m, créant ainsi un support pour des images magnifiques. Installations Le toit soutenu par un câble s’étend sur 28 mètres tout autour du stade. Deux tiers des 80 000 spectateurs seront ainsi abrités. Les spectateurs pénétreront dans l’enceinte par un podium classique sur lequel seront installées des unités indépendantes regroupant des espaces restauration et des boutiques. Transports L’accès au stade sera aisé – à pied ou en fauteuil roulant – depuis le Village olympique. Au sud du Parc olympique, une passerelle reliera le stade à la gare internationale de Stratford – terminus de la ligne qui effectue la liaison par train Javelin® en sept minutes depuis St Pancras au centre de Londres. Jusqu’à 25 000 personnes par heure devraient emprunter cette liaison. A proximité, la gare régionale rénovée de Stratford sera desservie par neuf autres services ferroviaires dont le Docklands Light Railway et les lignes du métro londonien Jubilee et Central. Les travaux d’extension et d’amélioration des lignes ont déjà démarré. New medical group formed Création d’un nouveau groupe médical
The London 2012 Organising Committee has formed a group to provide advice and input on Games-related medical planning, policies and services. The Medical Advisory Group (MAG) will cover issues ranging from the recruitment of medical volunteers through to the health and medical legacy of the 2012 Games. It will meet four times a year, under the chairmanship of Dr Richard Budgett, LOCOG’s Chief Medical Officer and an Olympic Rowing gold medallist. He will be joined by LOCOG Doping Control Manager Jonathan Harris and Dr Pam Venning, the LOCOG Medical Services Manager. Senior members of the National Health Service, London Ambulance Service and key medical service providers will also be included.
Handover plans progress Le passage du témoin se précise
Work is well under way on the Handover Ceremonies that will mark the start of the four-year journey to London 2012. Theatre director and producer Stephen Powell is developing and will deliver the two eight-minute segments that will form part of the Beijing Closing Ceremonies next summer. With experience including productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, Stephen will work with Martin Green, LOCOG’s recently-appointed Head of Ceremonies. Martin, who recently oversaw the public re-launch of the Dome in Greenwich a 2012 venue, also worked on London’s spectacular event for the Athens Torch Relay. He will be responsible for planning the Torch Relay, Medal and welcome Ceremonies as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. GB lead the way on water La Grand-Bretagne au sommet
British sailors dominated the second annual Sail for Gold Regatta, held over five days at the London 2012 Sailing venue in Weymouth and Portland. The Great Britain team beat off competition from 15 other nations to claim victory in all of the nine racing classes. The regatta was used to test out a range of high-tech media initiatives, with the aim of making the sport more accessible to audiences. A further 150 members of the UK’s junior sailing programme took part in a training camp that ran alongside the event. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is situated on England’s south coast. During the 2012 Games, Sailing will be a free, nonticketed event. Construction work on the venue is already underway, and completion of all works by 2009 will make the Academy one of the first venues to be ready in time for the 2012 Games. Visa changes for UK entry Nouvelles procédures pour l’entrée au G-B
Visitors needing a visa to enter the United Kingdom are now required to apply in person at their nearest Visa Application Office. The change comes after the UK Government introduced a biometric system, which requires visitors to supply 10 fingerprints and a digital photo with every application. Frequent visitors to the UK in the run-up to 2012, should consider applying for a long-term visa that can last for up to 10 years.
