9:00 AM-10:30 AM Candlemaking and Soapmaking by Mark Mohr. Participants will
make a hand-dipped candle like the pioneers did.
Numerous candlemaking related items (lanterns, molds,
etc.) will be brought for folks to see . The basic history of
candlemaking in pioneer America is covered. For the
soapmaking part the process of making lye soap is covered.
Sodium hydroxide (lye) is mixed with water and melted
lard and the resulting chemical reaction makes lye soap in
about 3 weeks time. This is the same process used in
biblical times, in pioneer American and even today,
although vegetable oil is frequently substituted for the lard
                        today.
