George School Presents: African Sanctus
Selections by David Fanshawe and other assorted works performed by the Student and Community Chorus in the
Meetinghouse.
Friends, we have S.P.I.C.E. in our life!
We have our Testimonies.
Simplicity
Peace
Integrity
Community
Equality
(See the pattern? Pretty cool huh?!)
Every other month or so I’m going to add a little SPICE to the newsletter! Our Testimonies are not easily lived by...or
are they? Our convinced faith in Quakerism is a daily walk, would it not always be more comfortable to be nearer the
warmth of the light than to drift away? Acceptance of our convincement helps us to simplify our choices in life. The
need of things is quite personal, some live comfortably with very little, others need a little more. By curtailing our
purchases, how are we affecting the lives of the people who manufacture the items we no longer purchase? Listen to
the inner voice, it will always guide you and keep you warm.
Home Sitter Needed
Doylestown Friends, Jacob and Gretta Stone will be Friends in Residence in Alaska from the summer of 2005 to the
summer of 2006!!! There’s really big hitch to making this all happen though, Jacob and Gretta need someone to rent
and keep their Doylestown home company while they’re away. Are you utterly and totally reliable? The townhouse of
Jacob and Gretta is one mile from the borough proper of Doylestown, it has three bedrooms, two and one-half baths, a
finished basement, and can come furnished, semi-furnished or unfurnished. Contact Jacob or Gretta at 215-230-0575
if you are interested.
Collection of Japanese Pottery on Display at Walton Center, George
School
Please take a few moments to experience the wonderful collection of Japanese pottery that Sam Nicholson of
Southampton Meeting and Chandler Hall has on display at George School.
Lives Passing
Southampton Friends mourn the loss of Marie Miller.
Newtown Friends mourn the loss of Loretta Osbourn. A memorial service will be held for Loretta on January 16th.
Centering Prayer
A Centering Prayer group meets at Newtown Meeting with members Wanda Guokas and Vicki Roza. Centering
Prayer is part of the ecumenical movement in the Christian Church to restore meditation as a spiritual practice.
“Christian Meditation” was founded by John Main and Laurence Freeman, Benedictine monks. They suggest the use
of the mantra: “marantha” translated meaning “Come Lord Jesus.” Centering Prayer was founded by Trappist monks:
Basil Pennington, Thomas Keating and others. They suggest the use of any word on one’s choice for God as a mantra.
“meditation is a way of attention rather than concentration. Concentration requires effort while attention is simple and
neutral. We concentrate on a problem. We give attention to a thing of beauty. Meditation does not mean thinking of
only one thing, as when we concentrate on an idea or problem at the mental level. It means rather stepping outside all
the thinking which obstructs our full awareness of our union with the center. The journey of meditation is coming to
full attention, and it is made with the grace of God...it is the work of love and it is by love, not by thought, that God is
ultimately known.” The Newtown group is organized around two 20 minute periods of meditation with a short walk in
between, followed by a reading from the Gospels then sharing. Call Wanda at 215-968-3775 for more information
