                           Senior Application

Congratulations on being selected a Spokane Scholar for 2010. The Spokane
Scholars Grant is designed to award the top academic student enrolled in Spokane
County high schools with substantial cash grants and college assistance for their
accomplishment in six academic areas: English, Fine Arts, World Languages,
Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Each high school that wishes to
participate in the grant program is asked to select the top academic student in their
institution in each of the six subject areas. A student may not be nominated in more
than one category.

The method of selection of the school nominees is a building decision. To assist
with the selection, an existing scholarship committee may be used.

Each nominee must complete the enclosed application form which will assist the
Spokane Scholar’s Committee in assessing the student’s academic success and
accomplishments.

The top students in each category will receive a monetary award. Each recipient
may also receive significant college assistance if they attend a matching college.

Again this year, ALL applicants must submit a CD containing the following:

 a digital senior photo for publicity
 4 digital photos of the scholar involved in various academic
                     disciplines and school activities
(These photos will be used during the dinner power-point slide
                     show at the banquet.)
 schools are encouraged to combine these digital scholar photos
                     onto one CD

ALL materials must be submitted together and postmarked by March 1, 2010.

Grant recipients will be announced at our annual Scholars Banquet on Monday, April
19, 2010, at the new Spokane Convention Center beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Sponsored by Spokane Scholars Foundation, Inc.

Scholar’s High School

The speaker for the 18th annual Spokane Scholars Banquet will be Mr. William Gates Sr., retired
attorney, philanthropist, author of the recent book, Showing Up for Life: Thoughts on the Gifts of a
Lifetime, and father of Microsoft chairman, Bill Gates. Among other positions, he is one of three co-
chairs of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the wealthiest and most active private
philanthropic foundations in the world. This foundation was established on the belief that “every life
has equal value,” where, quoting the foundation’s website, Mr. Gates “guides the vision and strategic
direction of the foundation and serves as an advocate for the foundation’s key issues.” If you are
interested in more information about the foundation, please go to www.gatesfoundation.org.

Mr. Gates wants to structure his banquet presentation around questions posed by this year’s
Spokane Scholars. Below, please submit a question for Mr. Gates’ response. Your question will
not be used as part of the Spokane Scholars grant competition. However, if Mr. Gates chooses your
question as part of his address, you may be invited on stage to ask your question, and you will
receive an autographed copy of Mr. Gates’ book.
