Background
Funds for these awards are provided by the Saunders-Matthey Cancer Prevention Foundation
through Dalhousie University and are administered jointly by Dalhousie University and the
BHCRI. The review process and administration of the funds will be managed by the BHCRI.
The Saunders-Matthey Cancer Prevention Foundation is an Ontario-based foundation that focuses
on cancer research and education in the area of primary cancer prevention, and has a particular
interest in the environmental factors that may contribute to cancer. The organization was founded
in 1996 by Ray Matthey in memory of his wife Mary (Sue) Saunders-Matthey, originally from West
LaHave, Nova Scotia; who along with his daughter had previously died from breast cancer.
The Foundation has generously committed a minimum of $50,000 over a two-year period to the
Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute at Dalhousie Medical School. Eligibility for these
awards extends to researchers in any Atlantic Province who are members of the Beatrice Hunter
Cancer Research Institute.
Applications are invited for proposals within the area of research, training, education and
knowledge dissemination in areas relating to prevention. Within this area the acceptable criteria
for 2011-12 are broad:
The application must describe research in the area of primary cancer prevention.
The proposed work may contain aspects of education and/or knowledge dissemination.
A focus on environmental factors will be welcomed.
The requested budget should be between $5,000 and $25,000 /year.
Projects should be 1 or 2 years in duration.
Part or all of the budget may be used for trainee support.
Pilot studies to facilitate larger grant applications are welcomed.
These funds may be used as an enabling match for other peer-approved proposals.
A 2-page report must be submitted within 3 months of completion of funding.
The funding available for this competition is not less than $50,000.
Notification of intent to apply
To be eligible to apply, the primary applicant must submit the following information as a single
electronic file in Microsoft Word (no other format permitted) to admin@bhcri.ca by 4pm on
Monday 21 November 2011:
i. Name and affiliation of primary applicant.
ii. Names and affiliations of anticipated co-applicants (if any).*
iii. Title of proposal.
iv. Abstract of work proposed – 1 page, double-spaced.*
v. Funding to be requested (amount, 1 or 2 years).*
vi. General nature of budget (e.g. research materials, trainee).
* Changes are permitted in the final submission.

1. Ensure that the proposed submission fits within the parameters of this competition,
2. Allow the best selection of reviewers for the type of applications anticipated.
Applicants should be notified of permission to proceed with a full application (or that the
proposal is ineligible) by Friday 25 November 2011.
External reviewers may be used. Applicants are invited, if they wish, to suggest up to four
names of possible independent reviewers with whom they have no conflicting relationship
(personal relationship, collaboration, joint publication or supervision during the past 5 years).

Detailed instructions:
1. A covering letter, signed by the Principal Applicant that includes each of the following:
a. Confirmation that all facilities and resources required for the work to be undertaken,
other than those described in the proposal, are in place.
b. Confirmation that the work described does not overlap with research already
funded, or currently under consideration by other funding sources (if there is overlap
or potential overlap, this should be described).
c. Information on matching funds that are projected, if any.
d. Acknowledgement that, if funds are awarded, a final report will be submitted
without reminder within 3 months of the end of the funding period.
2. A project description, comprising the items listed and in this order:
a. An index for this section with pages numbered sequentially.
b. A lay abstract, pre-approved for public release if funds are awarded (maximum one
page double-spaced).
c. A scientific/technical abstract (maximum one page single-spaced).
d. A project description (3-5 pages double-spaced, exclusive of figures, tables,
references or essential appendices). This should include the following:
(i) Background to the problem.

(ii) Sufficient methodology/procedures/analysis to make your approach fully
understood by cancer researchers working outside of your own field.
(iii) An indication of the anticipated outcome of the work in terms of findings
or facilitation of further work in this area.
(iv) An explanation of the anticipated impact on “research, training,
education and knowledge dissemination in areas relating to prevention”.
3. Sufficient information to demonstrate the proficiency of the applicant(s).
a. A full curriculum vitae of the Principal Applicant (the Common CV module is
acceptable, but not required). This must include full details of current and
pending sources of funding.
b. An abbreviated (no more than 5 pages) curriculum vitae for each co-
applicant, including current funding details.
c. For trainees to be supported on this funding, a curriculum vitae (any format),
original transcripts and two letters of reference.
4. A brief (1-2 pages) budget indicating how the funds will be used.
Sufficient information should be provided to justify expenditures to the
reasonable reviewer. All anticipated budget line items (e.g. personnel, materials,
services) must be included for funding to be approved for such purposes.
These funds are not intended for the payment of general salary or administrative
support of the investigators; but support of trainees, essential administrative or
technical support, or services (e.g. statistical analysis) is permissible if properly
justified in the application.
The requirements for the proposal text overall are, US Letter size pages, margins no less than
2.5cm, no smaller than 12pt standard font (Times New Roman or similar).
Review of applications and awarding of funds
The applications will be assessed and ranked by the Scientific Review Committee in terms of
scientific merit, feasibility and impact. Funding will only be approved for budget items that are
justified as being essential to completion of the project as described. The target date for
notification of applicants and release of funds is 15 March 2012.
Eligibility for these awards extends to researchers in any Atlantic Province who are members of
the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute. The BHCRI reserves the right to award only part
of the available funding, or not to make an award, if requirements for this competition are not
met in full.
