Re: Case introduction memo
Overview:
This memo is going to introduce my case to the employment document. I am going to make a few
things clear about myself and my job ad so that the rest of the following documents make sense.
Education and background:
My major is journalism and I am in my third year here at Eastern. I am not sure when I am going to
graduate, but by next year I will know after I get more into my major and minor. The relevant classes
I have taken for my major so far are news writing and reporting, introduction to print, history of
American journalism, feature writing, and introduction to public relations. I still need some classes to
fulfill this major, including advanced reporting and contemporary problems in journalism. I also need
to figure out my minor so I can begin to take those classes. I currently write for the Arts and
Entertainment section in the Echo and would someday love to have a job writing for a newspaper or
magazine.
About my major:
Journalism involves writing in some way shape or form. This could include writing for a newspaper
or magazine, or even writing company newsletters. Journalism also involves having good people
skills to be able to do things like conduct interviews for stories.
Why I choose the job ad:
I would not apply for this job in a real life situation. Although I have qualities they are looking for,
the project manager job does not directly relate to what I want to do. I choose this ad not realizing
from the beginning that I should have picked something that related more directly to my field. If I
were to apply for this job, however, it would be in the future. The job requires 2-5 years experience,
which I do not have now.
What the company wants:
This ad wants someone who can travel to meet with clients, manage project costs, recognize team
performance and has a degree in journalism. They also want someone who can multi task efficiently
and work well with difficult clients.

Dear Maritz employers:
I am applying for the position of project manager at the Southfield store location. I found
this ad while searching monster.com. I enjoy being in a workplace that encourages teamwork, and I
can begin as soon as possible.
Past jobs and interacting with coworkers and clients have built my people skills and
experiences. I am able to work with difficult clients, because at my past job I did it everyday. I
worked at Petsmart in Dearborn and had to make sure customers were satisfied with the services
provided.
I have knowledge of Microsoft Office and Word that I gained through using in classes. I am
also getting a degree in journalism that will add to my writing skills. These skills grew stronger when
I started to work at the Eastern Echo. I learned to work with people and how to handle working under
pressure with deadlines. I can multi-task efficiently in order to get the job done.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me on my cell at (313) 213-0452. If I can not
be reached, please leave a voice mail and I will get back to you. Thank you.

Re: Process documentation cover letter memo
Overview:
This memo is going to prove I have applied concepts learned in class to my cover letter. The changes
I made were done for the reader and will persuade my audience I can do the job.
Audience needs to be aware of facts while reading
After I completed my first cover letter, I realized it was necessary to add where I found the job ad.
This helps employers know where people are finding ads and where to keep advertising to. I also
went into detail as the drafts went on about my past job. Although the job wasn’t the same as this
one, it shows I have things they are looking for, like client and teamwork skills. That way I made a
connection with what I have and what the company wants.
Audience needs to know the potential employee wants the job
In my final cover letter, I put my phone number in the closing paragraph, as well as at the bottom
with the contact information. I also mentioned that a voice mail can be left if I am unavailable. These
changes show that I would like to hear from the company. It reinforces that I am available to be
contacted and I will call back if unavailable. It is important to speak to the employer, because the
cover letter is to talk directly and persuade I have something they want.
Organization makes the document easier to read and follow
In my final letter, I broke up paragraphs and indented them. Before the final letter, I had a large
paragraph in the middle that needed to be broken up to make sense. In the final letter, I grouped the
paragraphs according to proximity, how close they are related. The first paragraph relates because it
says what I am applying for and how I found out about it. The next paragraph mentions a past job at
which I developed skills this company is looking for. It is making connections with what I have and
what they want. The next paragraph goes further into my writing skills, because the company would
like someone with a degree in journalism.

Re: PDM resume
Overview:
The purpose of this memo is to show I made appropriate changes in my resumes to relate to audience
and job ad.
Objectives must match job applying for
In my final resume, I needed to change my objective. When I wrote my first resume, I thought I
might apply for a summer internship. After I had my job ad for this assignment, I noticed that was not
the case. I had to say what job I was applying for, how I found out about it, and the location of the
company. If I did not change my objective, the reader would probably toss my resume because it
would have been for a different job.
Audience needs to be convinced I have what they want
In my final resume, I added some things under my last job. I added that I worked with clients and
coworkers to get the job done. Since the resume is read after the cover letter, it is reinforcing one
more time that I have something they are looking for. Under the sorority section, I added I hold a
position that involves working with others in order to make decisions. That way, the sorority part is
not just mentioned for no reason. It shows I can work with others to accomplish things.

Dear Steve Benninghoff,
I am a third year student with a major in journalism. I currently write for the Echo and would
someday love to have a job writing for a newspaper or magazine. This winter or summer I am going
to apply for an internship. I plan on applying for one that involves writing for a newspaper. I am also
going to figure out my minor. That way I can start taking those classes and graduate as soon as
possible. Then, I can work on getting my dream job as a journalist.

It looks like you have all the qualifications that the job requires. What makes
you better then what they ask for,
what qualifies you more, because you saying that you should get the job, but
your not selling yourself well
enough. What makes me (the person hiring you) to want to look at your resume
or continue researching you
more as a candidate that I want to hire? I think your off to a good start, include
more experience you have. I
looks like you went down the list of what they are requiring on their job ad and
simply stated whether you met
those requirements or not. I think that you should include you contact
information within the last chuck of you
letter, and also at the end, or even better at the top as you would do for your
resume. By including your contact
information in several places, if they want to call you for an interview then that
information is easily accessible.
Good things that you did: you included what position you were applying for, and
also where you found the ad.
I think that this is a little harsh. I hope you don’t take offense to this.

Melanie-
-I think it would be a good idea to make this more of a formal memo then a
casual letter, then you could divide
the topics ups under subject headings. For example you could talk about the
requirements of the job and how
your major applies. You could explain how you qualify for more basic (non-
technical) requirements with support
from past experience you obtained from previous employment.
-Introduce you major before you introduce the year in school you are. If you
know when (approximately) you
might graduate, I suggest you include that also.
What is the major and where is the person in it?
Third year Journalism major.
What sort of things do people in this major do?
Write for magazines or newspapers.
Do you understand what these things are?
The document doesn’t explain what a journalism major does. The titles of the
classes sort of do, but a
person wouldn’t know if they didn’t have some knowledge of journalism.
Do you understand from the memo why they matter?
The memo doesn’t really tell what the job position requires specifically. I can
guess that it requires a
journalism major.
Do you know what part of this major the writer enjoys?
The major is journalism, and they someday want to work for a newspaper of
magazine, so they want to do
actual journalism.
Do you know why the writer chose this ad? Are those reasons likely to persuade
the company?
This is not a job that Melanie would apply for, this is not convincing to the
company at all.
Are you convinced the writer is bringing their individual or personal experience
to the job?
Melanie currently works for the Echo, that is job experience that would get them
a job at the newspaper or
magazine.
